0.1 · What a Digital Twin Is

A digital twin is a living virtual model of a real building, connected to it by live data so it updates as the building runs - and can analyse, predict and even control it. This lesson sets the mindset the whole course builds on: the defining feature is the live link, not the 3D geometry.

What you'll be able to do

  • 1Tell a real digital twin from a 3D model, and read any building as a smart-building stack.
  • 2Understand IoT sensing, connectivity and protocols (BACnet, Modbus, KNX, MQTT), and the BMS.
  • 3Work with building data, platforms and ontologies, and build a digital twin from BIM.
  • 4Apply analytics, fault detection and predictive control, and weigh the business case, security and ethics.

The full course ahead

The course opens with the foundations — what a digital twin is and what makes a building smart — then works through IoT and sensing, connectivity and protocols, building management systems, data and platforms, the digital twin from BIM, analytics and AI, and predictive and autonomous control — closing with occupant wellbeing, security and governance, and the business case, scale and career that make it real.

Module 0 · Foundations of Digital Twins & Smart Buildings

Live

Before any sensor: what a digital twin really is, what makes a building smart, how the twin and the building relate, and an honest read of the hype.

1

Module 1 · IoT & Sensing

Live

The building's senses: what sensors measure, IoT devices and actuators, sensor networks and metering, and why data quality decides everything.

2

Module 2 · Connectivity & Protocols

Live

How the building talks: wired and wireless networks, the building protocols (BACnet, Modbus, KNX), the IoT protocols (MQTT, LoRaWAN), and edge, cloud and gateways.

3

Module 3 · Building Management Systems

Live

The nervous system: what a BMS/BAS does, automating HVAC, lighting and access control, control loops and sequences, and open versus proprietary systems.

4

Module 4 · Data & Platforms

Live

Making data usable: building data architecture, time-series data and historians, IoT platforms and integration, and the data models (Brick, Haystack) that give data meaning.

5

Module 5 · The Digital Twin

Live

Building the twin: from BIM to a digital twin, the anatomy of a twin (geometry + data + behaviour), fidelity and levels, and visualization and dashboards.

6

Module 6 · Analytics & AI

Live

Turning data into insight: building analytics basics, fault detection and diagnostics, machine learning for buildings, and energy analytics and benchmarking.

7

Module 7 · Predictive & Autonomous

Live

Buildings that anticipate: predictive maintenance, predictive and model-based control, self-optimizing buildings, and occupant-responsive control.

8

Module 8 · Occupant Experience & Wellbeing

Live

People at the centre: smart comfort and control, indoor air quality monitoring, occupant apps and experience, and health, wellbeing and WELL.

9

Module 9 · Security, Privacy & Governance

Live

Doing it safely: OT and IoT cybersecurity, data privacy and ethics, standards and interoperability, and resilience and reliability.

10

Module 10 · Practice, Scale & Career

Live

Making it real at scale: the business case and ROI, retrofit versus new build, smart cities and portfolios, and the smart-buildings career.
