STP Desludging Interval Calculator

Estimate how often a sewage treatment plant's sludge holding tank must be desludged. Enter the dry sludge produced, tank volume, solids concentration and fill target — get the safe interval between desludging in days and weeks.

Your sludge tank

Dry solids the STP wastes to the sludge tank each day.

Dry-solids content the tank can hold before it must be emptied — thickened sludge sits ≈1–3%.

Sludge accumulation vs threshold

Dry sludge builds at 30 kg/day; you desludge when it reaches the usable 80 kg threshold (dashed line).

Bars turn terracotta once the tank crosses its safe fill level — that is when a desludge is due.

How this is calculated

  • Tank sludge capacity = tank volume × solids % × 1000 = 10 × 1.0% × 1000 = 100 kg of dry solids.
  • Usable capacity = tank capacity × 80% fill target = 80 kg.
  • Desludging interval = usable capacity ÷ dry sludge produced = 80 ÷ 30 = 3 days (0.4 weeks).

Indicative scheduling for O&M planning. Actual sludge production varies with load, technology and wasting practice — track tank levels and confirm the interval on site.
