The Final Polish
Dodge and burn, vignette, chromatic aberration, grain, sharpening - and when to stop
A perfect image looks fake. The last move of post is to add back the tiny flaws a real camera would have made.
Here is the strange paradox at the end of the pipeline: a technically flawless render - perfectly sharp everywhere, perfectly clean, perfectly even - reads as computer-generated, precisely because it is too perfect. Real photographs are never like that. Real cameras and lenses introduce small imperfections everywhere: a slight darkening at the frame's corners, a faint colour fringe on high-contrast edges, a whisper of sensor grain, a focus that is sharp in one plane and soft elsewhere.
The final polish is the deliberate addition of those imperfections - along with the last tonal shaping (dodge and burn) and a touch of sharpening - to push the image the final five percent from 'clean render' to 'photograph'. And woven through all of it is the single hardest skill in visualization: knowing when the image is finished, and stopping.
The finest post is invisible. Add every flaw in a whisper, compare to the raw, and stop before you can name the effect.
The last 5% that says 'photographed'
By this point in post you have a strong image: composited from passes, graded to a mood, populated and cleaned and glowing. It is ninety-five percent of the way there. The final polish is the last five percent - a collection of tiny effects, each almost invisible on its own, that together tip the image over the line from 'obviously rendered' to 'could be a photograph'. Understanding why these effects work is what keeps you from misusing them.
The reason is that our eyes have spent a lifetime looking at photographs, and photographs are made by physical cameras with physical lenses and sensors - imperfect optical instruments. Every real photo carries the fingerprints of that imperfection: light falls off toward the edges of a lens, so corners are slightly darker; a lens bends different colours by slightly different amounts, so high-contrast edges carry a faint coloured fringe; a sensor has a noise floor, so even a clean image has a fine texture of grain; and a lens focuses on one plane, so depth falls away into softness. We do not consciously notice these things, but their absence registers as wrongness. A render with none of them is optically impossible - no real camera could have made it - and some part of the viewer's brain quietly flags it as unreal.
The polish stage adds those fingerprints back on purpose. It is, in a sense, the reverse of everything before it: instead of making the image cleaner and more correct, you are carefully degrading it in the specific ways a real camera would - imitating the flaws of physical capture. This is a well-established idea; it is exactly why film and game engines deliberately simulate lens dirt, bloom, aberration and grain. Done with a light hand, these imperfections are the difference between an image that impresses a fellow visualizer with its cleanliness and one that fools a client into thinking they are looking at a photo of a building that does not yet exist. That is the whole goal of the course, delivered in its final, smallest moves.

Dodge and burn, and the vignette
The first polish moves are about local tone - selectively brightening and darkening parts of the image to guide the eye and add dimension. The technique is borrowed straight from the traditional darkroom, where printers would hold light back from some areas (dodge, to brighten) and add extra to others (burn, to darken) while making a print. In digital post you do the same with a soft, low-opacity brush on a dedicated layer: gently lighten the areas you want the eye drawn to - the focal point, a sunlit surface, a face - and gently darken the areas you want to recede - deep corners, the frame edges, distractions. Done subtly, dodge and burn adds a sculpted, three-dimensional quality and quietly directs the viewer's attention exactly where you want it, without them ever knowing they were steered.
The vignette is dodge and burn's most reliable special case: a gentle darkening of the frame's edges and corners. Real lenses produce it naturally, and photographers have used it forever because it works - a darkened border subtly pushes the viewer's eye inward, toward the brighter centre of the image where the subject usually sits. A whisper of vignette adds focus, depth and a photographic feel almost for free. The key word, again, is whisper: a heavy vignette looks like a cheap phone-app filter and draws attention to itself, exactly the opposite of what a good vignette should do. You want the viewer to feel the focus, not see the darkening.
Together, dodge-burn and vignette form the tonal half of the polish: they do not add anything foreign to the image, they just redistribute its light to sculpt form and steer the eye. Because they are so subtle, the discipline is to apply them, then toggle the layer off and on - if you can barely tell the difference, you have it about right. If the effect is obvious with the layer on, it is too strong. This toggle-test is worth building into every polish move you make.
The imperfections: chromatic aberration and grain
The second group of polish moves adds the actual optical and sensor imperfections of a physical camera. Chromatic aberration is the faint coloured fringe - typically a thin edge of red-cyan or blue-yellow - that appears along high-contrast boundaries because a real lens cannot focus every wavelength of light to exactly the same point. In post you add it as a barely-perceptible split of the colour channels, strongest at the frame edges where real lenses fringe most and absent in the centre. Applied at a tiny amount, it is one of the most convincing 'this came through a lens' signals available; applied heavily, it looks like a broken video feed. As with everything here, the correct dose is the smallest one that registers subconsciously.
Grain is the fine, random texture that every real photograph carries - the noise floor of film or a digital sensor. A render is, by default, perfectly smooth, and that smoothness is subtly unnatural; overlaying a gentle, even layer of monochromatic grain reintroduces the organic texture of a real capture and, as a bonus, helps unify the disparate elements of a composite (the render, the cut-out people, the replaced sky) by laying one consistent texture over all of them. Grain also masks the faint banding that can appear in smooth gradients like skies. The amount should be felt more than seen - visible when you zoom in, almost subliminal at full-frame. Too much grain and the image looks noisy and low-quality; the right amount just makes it feel photographic.
A related, optional touch is depth of field - the soft falloff of focus away from the focal plane - which, if not already rendered, can be added in post using the z-depth pass from the compositing lesson to blur the background believably. Like aberration and grain, it is a fingerprint of a real lens: a photograph is rarely sharp everywhere. And like them, it is easy to overdo into a toy-like, obviously-faked miniature look. The theme could not be clearer: every one of these imperfections is powerful in a tiny dose and ruinous in a large one. You are adding the quiet evidence of a physical camera, not staging a display of effects.

Sharpening, and knowing when to stop
The last technical step, applied genuinely last, is sharpening - a touch of crispness that gives the final image bite. Sharpening exaggerates the contrast along edges so the picture reads as sharp and detailed. It comes at the very end because every step before it (blur, grain, resizing) affects the image, and you want to sharpen the final result once, not compound it. And it is powerful in small amounts and disastrous in large ones: over-sharpening produces ugly bright halos along every edge and a harsh, crunchy, artificial look that ironically reads as less real, not more. A light final sharpen, checked at full resolution, is all you want - just enough to make the image feel crisp, never enough to see the halos.
But the true final skill of this lesson - and arguably of the whole course - is not a technique at all. It is knowing when to stop. Post-production has no natural end. There is always one more tweak: a little more contrast, a touch more glow, another degree of warmth, one more figure, a stronger vignette. Each move feels like an improvement in the moment, and it is desperately easy to keep pushing until you have quietly walked the image past its best version into an over-processed, over-graded, over-effected mush - and, having stared at it for hours, to no longer be able to see that you have. Nearly every ruined render was ruined not by too little post but by too much.
The professional defences against this are concrete. Work in small amounts and toggle every effect off and on - if the image is not clearly better with it on, remove it. Step away and return with fresh eyes; the over-processing you cannot see at midnight is obvious in the morning. Keep the raw render and an early version to compare against, so you can tell whether you are still improving the image or just changing it. And internalise the governing rule of all post-production: if a viewer can name the effect - 'nice vignette', 'strong grain', 'heavy grade' - you have used too much of it. The finest post is invisible; it makes the image feel real and right without ever announcing itself. Learn to stop at that invisible point, and you have learned the deepest lesson of the craft.

Workshop - polish, then learn to stop
You will apply the full polish stage to a finished image in tiny doses, then deliberately practise the hardest skill: recognising when you have gone too far and pulling back. This exercise is as much about judgement as technique.
Photoshop or any editor supporting dodge/burn (or soft brushes on layers), blur, a grain/noise filter and sharpening. The z-depth pass from lesson 7.1 if you want to add depth-of-field.

- 1On a new layer, dodge and burn: gently brighten your focal point and darken the deep corners with a soft low-opacity brush. Toggle the layer off and on - keep it only if the difference is barely perceptible.
- 2Add a subtle vignette, a tiny amount of chromatic aberration on the edges, and a whisper of monochromatic grain - each on its own layer, each at low opacity. Toggle each off and on to check it is felt, not seen.
- 3Now deliberately overdo everything: crank the vignette, grain, aberration and contrast until the image clearly looks over-processed. Study it - name exactly what makes it look cheap and fake. Screenshot this 'too far' version.
- 4Pull every effect back to the point where you can no longer name any single one of them, and the architecture is what you notice. Add a light final sharpen, once, at full resolution.
- 5Compare three versions side by side: raw render, over-processed, and final polish. Write three lines on where 'finished' actually was, and how you will recognise it next time.

The polish is what makes a client believe the image, but restraint is what keeps them believing the design. A whisper of vignette and grain sells realism; a heavy hand buries your architecture under effects and reads as a gimmick. Add the imperfections lightly, sharpen once at the end, and above all learn to declare an image finished - the over-worked render helps no one.
Subtle grain and a gentle vignette give an interior that warm, editorial, magazine-photograph feel. These are the touches that make a room look shot for a design magazine rather than rendered. But they are seasoning - a little lifts the image, a lot ruins it. Toggle every effect off and on, and trust the version where the space, not the effect, is what you notice.
Knowing when to stop is the mark of a maturing eye, and it is rare in student work. It is tempting to pile on every effect you have just learned - and the result almost always looks over-cooked. Add each imperfection in a tiny dose, compare against your raw render constantly, and remember the rule: if a viewer can name the effect, it is too strong. Restraint reads as skill.
