Camera Paths & Walkthroughs
Keyframes, smooth interpolation, speed and easing, and moves that do not make people queasy
A great walkthrough is not fast. It is slow, smooth and deliberate - the camera moves like it means it.
The single most common mistake in a first architectural animation is the same one every time: the camera moves too fast, snaps into motion, whips around corners, and leaves the viewer slightly seasick. The fix is almost never more keyframes - it is fewer, slower, better-eased ones.
A camera path is simply a handful of poses in space and time that the engine joins into one continuous move. Once you understand keyframes, interpolation and easing as three separate controls, you stop fighting the software and start directing a shot - a camera that glides, holds, and reveals on purpose.
Few keyframes, smooth spline, eased and slow, level and aimed. That is a comfortable, cinematic move.
Keyframes: a few poses, not a hand-flown path
A camera animation is built from keyframes - saved snapshots of where the camera is, where it is pointing, and often its lens and settings, each pinned to a moment in time. You do not fly the camera by hand frame by frame; you set a pose at second zero, another at second four, another at second eight, and the software connects them. This is the mental shift that makes animation manageable: you are choreographing a few key moments, and the engine handles everything in between.
In practice you place the camera at a good starting composition and record a keyframe. Then you move it - forward through a door, up to reveal a courtyard, across to a feature wall - and record another. In Twinmotion this is the timeline and the recorded 'clip'; in Lumion it is the movie mode with its keyframe track; in D5 and Enscape it is a video/path editor where each saved viewpoint is a node. The tools differ in chrome but not in concept: key poses in, smooth motion out.
The discipline that separates a professional path from a beginner's is restraint in how many keyframes you set. Fewer keyframes, further apart, produce longer, calmer, more graceful moves - the engine has room to draw a smooth curve. Cram in many keyframes close together and the path wiggles, stutters and fights itself. A thirty-second reveal might need only four or five well-chosen poses. Think of each keyframe as an expensive decision - a pose you would be happy to hold as a still photograph - rather than a point you scribble in while dragging the camera around. If every keyframe is a shot you would print, the move between them is almost always good.

Interpolation: the curve the engine draws between poses
Between two keyframes the engine has to invent every frame, and how it does that is called interpolation. By default most engines draw a smooth curve - a spline - through your key poses rather than straight lines, so the camera arcs gently instead of turning hard corners. Understanding this is what lets you predict and control the move rather than being surprised by it.
Two things about interpolation trip people up. First, a smooth spline through your keyframes can overshoot - if you place a pose hard against a wall, the curved path may bulge through that wall on the way in or out, because the spline is trying to stay smooth, not to respect your geometry. The fix is to add a nearby guiding keyframe or to nudge the pose so the curve stays inside the space. Second, the camera's aim is interpolated too, not just its position: if it is looking left at one keyframe and hard right at the next, it will swing between them, and a fast swing is exactly what makes viewers queasy. Keeping the target moving gently - or locking the camera to look at a fixed point of interest while it travels - produces a far calmer result.
Most engines let you choose the interpolation style: smooth (the default, eased curves), linear (constant, mechanical), or stepped/hold (jump-cuts between poses). For an architectural walkthrough smooth is almost always right, with the occasional deliberate hold when you want the camera to pause and let a space breathe. The craft is to treat interpolation as a thing you direct - checking the actual path the engine drew, scrubbing through it, and correcting overshoots and wild aim swings - not as a black box you hope behaves.
Speed and easing: how the move starts, holds and stops
Two clips can pass through the exact same keyframes and feel completely different, because speed and easing are separate from the path itself. Speed is how much distance the camera covers per second; easing is how that speed changes over time - especially at the start and the end of a move.
The default enemy is linear motion: the camera is instantly at full speed, holds it dead constant, then stops abruptly. Nothing in the physical world moves like that, so it reads as robotic and, worse, the sudden starts and stops are jarring. The remedy is ease-in and ease-out: the camera accelerates smoothly from rest, cruises, then decelerates gently to a stop - exactly how a real crane, dolly or drone behaves because they have mass. This single change is the biggest difference between an amateur and a professional-feeling move, and every serious animation tool exposes it, whether as easing handles on the timeline, a 'smooth' toggle, or per-keyframe speed control.
As for absolute speed: almost every beginner move is too fast. A walkthrough should travel at roughly the pace of a slow, appreciative human walk, or slower - a viewer needs time to actually see the space, read the materials and absorb the design. When in doubt, halve the speed and lengthen the clip. It is also good practice to keep speed roughly consistent across a sequence so the whole film feels like one considered camera, and to build in genuine holds - moments where the camera slows almost to a stop on an important view, letting it land before moving on. Slow, eased and holding is the recipe; fast, linear and restless is the tell.
Ease in, ease out. Never snap to speed. And when in doubt, go slower - the viewer needs time to see.
Not making people queasy: the comfort rules
Motion sickness from a walkthrough is not the viewer being fragile - it is the camera doing things a real head or vehicle never would, and the eyes and inner ear disagreeing about it. A handful of comfort rules prevent almost all of it, and they double as good cinematography.
Keep it slow and eased, as above - sudden acceleration is a prime trigger. Avoid fast rotations, especially spinning the camera on the spot or whipping it around a corner; if you must turn, turn slowly and ideally while also moving forward, so the turn feels motivated. Keep the camera level - a subtle, unmotivated roll or a constantly bobbing horizon is deeply unsettling; lock roll to zero unless you have a strong reason. Do not clip through geometry - passing the camera through a wall, a column or a ceiling breaks the illusion and jars the eye, which is another reason to check your interpolated path for overshoots. Maintain a stable height as you travel, roughly at eye level (around 1.5 to 1.6 metres), rather than drifting up and down. And give the eye an anchor: a clear point of interest the camera is moving toward or around gives the viewer something to hold, whereas aimless drifting through empty space feels floaty and nauseating.
The irony is that all of these comfort rules are also the rules of good, cinematic camera work. A slow, level, eased, motivated move with a clear subject is both the most comfortable to watch and the most professional-looking. You rarely have to choose between comfort and beauty - fixing one fixes the other. If a client ever says a walkthrough made them feel a little dizzy, do not add stabilisation gimmicks: slow it down, ease it, level it, and give it something to look at. It also helps to test the clip on the actual screen it will be shown on, since a move that feels fine on a small preview window can be overwhelming on a large presentation display or in a headset, where the motion fills far more of the viewer's field of view. When in genuine doubt, err on the side of calmer and slower - almost no one has ever complained that an architectural walkthrough moved too gently, while a restless one loses the room in seconds.

Workshop - one slow, eased ten-second move
You will build a single, deliberately slow walkthrough with only a few keyframes, and feel the difference easing makes by comparing it against a linear version of the same path.

- 1Choose one clear point of interest - a doorway, a courtyard, a feature wall - that the camera will move toward. Place the camera at eye level (about 1.5 m) at a good wide composition and set keyframe 1.
- 2Move the camera slowly toward the point of interest, keeping it looking at that fixed target, and set keyframe 2 partway. Move to the reveal position and set keyframe 3. Use only three or four keyframes total for the whole ten seconds.
- 3Play it back. Scrub the interpolated path and check for overshoot through walls and for any swing in the camera's aim. Nudge poses until the curve stays inside the space and the aim moves gently.
- 4Set the motion to linear (constant speed) and watch it - note how it snaps and stops. Now switch to smooth easing (ease-in/ease-out) and compare. Keep the eased version.
- 5It will probably still feel a touch fast: lengthen the clip so the same move takes twelve to fifteen seconds, add a short hold on the final reveal, and lock roll to zero.

Read the band that fits you — or all three.
A walkthrough is how you let a client move through the building before it exists - so it must move the way a person would. Slow, level, eye-level paths that pause on key spatial moments communicate sequence and procession, which is often the actual design idea. A restless, fast fly-through communicates nothing except that the software can move. Treat the camera path as choreographing the experience of your architecture.
For interiors the camera is close to everything, so motion mistakes are magnified. A slow drift past a material palette, easing to a hold on a feature, lets a client feel the room's rhythm. Keep the camera at seated or standing eye level, move slowly enough that textures and light read, and never whip around a tight space - in a small room a fast turn is instantly sickening and hides the very detail you want to sell.
Your first animation will almost certainly be too fast - fix that and you are ahead of most. Learn the three separate controls - keyframes, interpolation, easing - on one short move before you attempt anything ambitious. A calm, ten-second, well-eased pass through one space in your portfolio reads as far more professional than a frantic minute-long tour. Slow is the cheat code.
