The hook

A game camera shows you the level. A cine camera shows you the building - with a real lens, a real sensor and a photographer's eye.

The free-fly camera you have used to navigate Unreal so far is a tool for getting around. It has no lens, no sensor, no depth of field - it just floats. The moment you want a shot that reads as architecture rather than as a video game, you reach for a different actor: the Cine Camera Actor.

The Cine Camera is a simulated physical camera. It has a focal length measured in millimetres, an aperture in f-stops, a sensor with a real size, and a focus system - exactly the controls a photographer uses. Learn what each one does to the image, pair it with a few composition rules that architectural photographers live by, and your walkthroughs stop looking like gameplay and start looking like the building was shot on a full-frame camera.

Set a lens, not a viewpoint. 28mm, level, eye height, f/8 - then compose.

The Cine Camera Actor is a real camera, not a viewpoint

Drop a Cine Camera Actor into your level (Place Actors panel, or Cinematic menu) and you get something quite different from the editor's free-fly view. Its Details panel is organised like a camera body: a Filmback (the sensor), a Lens (focal length and aperture), and Focus Settings. Pilot it - right-click the actor and Pilot, or use the viewport's camera bookmark - and you compose through that lens, seeing exactly what it will render.

The most important control is focal length, in millimetres. A short focal length (a wide lens, say 16-24mm) takes in a lot of the scene and exaggerates perspective - useful for tight interiors where you cannot step back, but it stretches edges and makes rooms look cavernous. A long focal length (a tele lens, 50-85mm+) narrows the view and flattens perspective, which keeps proportions honest and is flattering for a facade shot from across the street. Most architectural work sits in the 24-35mm range: wide enough to give context, not so wide it distorts. Focal length and the sensor size together set the field of view - Unreal computes it for you, which is why you set a focal length and a filmback rather than a raw FOV angle.

A practical way to internalise this is to think in 35mm-equivalent millimetres, the language photographers and clients share. On the default 35mm Full Frame filmback the millimetre number is the equivalent, so 24mm reads as a classic architectural wide, 35mm as a natural reportage lens, and 50mm as the 'normal' lens closest to unmagnified human vision. As rough anchors, a 24mm on full frame spans about a 74-degree horizontal field of view, a 35mm about 54 degrees, and a 50mm about 40 degrees. Unreal shows you the exact number, but carrying those anchors lets you choose a lens before you even pilot the camera - and it explains the classic complaint 'my 24mm looks like a 40mm', which happens when a smaller filmback crops the same focal length tighter.

Aperture, filmback and focus - the rest of the lens

Aperture is set as an f-stop (the Cine Camera's Current Aperture). It does two jobs. In a real camera it controls exposure, but in Unreal exposure is handled by the post-process and light, so here aperture mostly controls depth of field - how much of the scene is in sharp focus. A wide aperture (small number, f/1.4-f/2.8) throws the background into soft blur and isolates a subject; a narrow aperture (f/8-f/16) keeps foreground to background crisp. Architecture usually wants more in focus, so f/8-f/11 is a safe home base - a shallow f/2 shot of a whole room looks like a toy model, because that much blur reads as macro photography, not space. Use shallow depth of field deliberately, for a detail: a door handle, a material sample, a chair in the foreground.

The Filmback is the virtual sensor. Presets include 35mm Full Frame (36 x 24mm), Super 35, and various digital-cinema sizes; a larger sensor gives a wider view at the same focal length and a slightly shallower depth of field. Pick one and leave it - 35mm Full Frame is a sensible default that matches how most photographers think in millimetres. Finally, Focus Settings decide what is sharp: Manual lets you dial a focus distance (there is a handy debug mode that draws the focus plane in the viewport); Tracking locks focus onto a chosen actor so it stays sharp as either it or the camera moves - invaluable in a walkthrough where your subject shifts. Set focus wrong and a wide-aperture shot will focus on the wall behind your hero object; when in doubt, narrow the aperture and the problem mostly disappears.

Two smaller controls are worth knowing. The Cine Camera exposes a Min F-stop / Max F-stop range and a diaphragm blade count, which shape the out-of-focus highlights (bokeh) - more blades give rounder highlights, a detail that matters only when you deliberately shoot shallow. And there is a genuinely useful habit for nailing focus: turn on the draw-debug focus plane, which paints a translucent plane in the viewport exactly where the lens is sharp, so you position it on your subject by eye rather than guessing a distance in centimetres. For a whole-room shot you rarely want any of this drama; set f/8-f/11, let the deep focus forgive imprecise focusing, and reserve shallow depth of field and shaped bokeh for the one detail shot where a soft background genuinely helps the composition.

Composing an architectural shot

A correctly configured camera pointed carelessly still gives a bad picture. Architectural photographers follow a handful of rules, and they translate directly to Unreal.

Keep verticals vertical. The fastest tell of an amateur building shot is columns and window mullions that lean inward because the camera is tilted up. Real photographers use a tilt-shift lens; in Unreal you get the same result by keeping the camera level (pitch near zero) and, if you need to see more of the top of a building, raising the camera or using a slightly wider lens rather than tipping it back. A dead-level camera makes every vertical edge parallel, and the building instantly looks composed rather than snapshotted.

Choose one-point or two-point perspective on purpose. Pointing straight down a corridor or axis gives a symmetrical one-point shot - formal, calm, good for a grand approach. Standing off the corner so two facades recede to two vanishing points gives a two-point shot - dynamic, three-dimensional, the classic exterior. Decide which story the shot tells. Set eye height honestly: put the camera at roughly 1.5-1.6m, standing human eye level, so the viewer reads the space at their own scale. Dropping to knee height makes a room look monumental (sometimes what you want); floating at ceiling height feels like a drone and loses human connection.

Thirds, layers, and letting light do the work

With verticals fixed and perspective chosen, the finishing moves are framing and depth. The rule of thirds - Unreal can overlay a thirds grid in the viewport - suggests placing a strong edge (a facade line, a doorway) on a third rather than dead-centre, and a subject at an intersection. It is a guide, not a law; symmetry deliberately broken or deliberately kept both work when they are a choice. Leading lines - a path, a handrail, a run of columns, the edge of a rug - draw the eye into the frame toward the subject; architecture is full of them, so use them.

Build the shot in layers: something in the foreground (a plant, furniture, a framing archway), the subject in the mid-ground, and context behind. Layered depth is what separates a flat elevation-like frame from a photograph you can feel space in - and it is where a touch of depth of field earns its place, softening a foreground element so the eye lands on the subject. Finally, remember the camera only captures light that is already there: the best composition cannot rescue a flatly lit scene. The exposure and post-process look you set in Module 4 - the tone curve, the highlights, a hint of bloom - is doing half the work of every frame. Compose for the light you have built, and shoot at the time of day that flatters the space.

A few last habits separate a considered frame from a lucky one. Turn on the safe-frame and guide overlays so you compose to the exact aspect ratio you will deliver (16:9 for a film, a taller crop for a portrait hero) rather than cropping in regret later. Watch the edges of the frame as carefully as the centre - a half-cut chair or a stray bright object in a corner pulls the eye straight off the subject, and nudging the camera a few centimetres usually fixes it. Give the composition somewhere to breathe with deliberate negative space - a calm expanse of wall, floor or sky against which the subject reads - because architecture photographed wall-to-wall with detail feels claustrophobic. And remember every frame is a still you can grab at full resolution with the High Resolution Screenshot tool while you compose, so you can build a set of considered stills long before you animate a single camera move.

You will take a single interior or exterior you have already built and make three deliberately different Cine Camera shots, so you feel how focal length, aperture and height change the reading of a space.

  1. 1Place a Cine Camera Actor and pilot it. Set the Filmback to 35mm Full Frame. Frame a two-point corner shot of the space at 28mm, camera dead level (pitch 0) at 1.55m height, aperture f/8. Note how the verticals stay parallel.
  2. 2Duplicate the camera and change only the focal length to 16mm from the same spot. Compare: see the edges stretch and the room balloon. Then try 50mm and step back until it frames - notice how much more honest the proportions look.
  3. 3For a third shot, pick a foreground detail (a chair, a handle, a material sample), set Focus to Tracking on that actor, open the aperture to f/2.2, and compose it in the foreground third with the room soft behind it.
  4. 4Turn on the viewport thirds grid and re-check each frame: is a strong edge or the subject sitting on a third or an intersection? Nudge the camera until the composition feels intentional.
  5. 5Export a high-res screenshot of each of the three and lay them side by side. Write one line under each on what the lens and height are doing to the story of the space.

A well-composed frame is an argument about the building. The lens you choose and the height you shoot from decide whether a facade reads as monumental or human, honest or exaggerated. Keeping verticals vertical and staying near a 24-35mm equivalent keeps proportions truthful - which matters when a client will compare your image to the finished building. Reach for a wider lens or a low camera only when you mean to.

Misconception check

Wider is better for architecture - a big wide-angle lens gets the whole building in, so use the widest you can.

A very wide lens (16mm and below) does fit more in, but it does so by stretching perspective: edges bow, near objects balloon, rooms look cavernous and proportions lie. That distortion is the opposite of what an architectural image should do, which is represent the building honestly. Professionals reach for the longest lens that still frames the shot, usually landing around 24-35mm, and step back or raise the camera rather than going wider. Wide lenses are a deliberate tool for genuinely tight interiors or an expressive, dramatic effect - not the default. Pair a moderate focal length with a level camera and your buildings keep their true shape.
