Turning presence into decisions - what to look for at true scale, how to mark it up, and how to stand in the design together
A VR headset that only impresses people has failed. The one that earns its place changes a decision that a plan and a render would have let slip.
It is easy to run a VR session that leaves everyone grinning and changes nothing. The whole point of immersive review is harder and more valuable: to surface the design problems that only reveal themselves at true scale, and to turn them into decisions before they are built. A ceiling that felt generous in section presses down on you; a sightline the plan promised is blocked by a column; a corridor reads tight the moment your shoulders are in it.
This final lesson of the module is about using everything you have set up - the headset, the scale, the comfort - as a design instrument and a shared room. We cover what to actually look for, how to capture findings so they survive the session, how multi-user review lets a client and team stand in the space together, and the plain workflow and etiquette that separate a productive review from an expensive novelty. It builds directly on the interactivity from Module 7 (day-night-and-configurators) - because options you can switch in the headset are what make a review generative.

What VR review is actually for - and what to look for
The unique thing VR gives a review is embodied spatial judgement at true 1:1 scale - the questions your body answers that your eyes alone cannot. So a good review is organised around exactly those questions, not around admiring the graphics. The high-value things to look for divide roughly into a few families. Proportion and volume: does a room feel generous or oppressive; is a double-height space thrilling or wasteful; does a ceiling height read right for its use. Sightlines and privacy: what do you actually see from the sofa, the bed, the reception desk; can you see into a bathroom from the hall; does the stair frame the view it promised. Circulation and clearance: is a corridor comfortable with your shoulders in it; can two people pass; is a door swing awkward; does the kitchen triangle work when you walk it. Reach and ergonomics: can you reach the high shelf, is the worktop the right height, does the switch fall to hand. And light and material at scale, especially with Lumen and day/night switching - how morning versus evening changes the room, whether a finish reads warm or cold when it wraps around you.
The discipline that makes this productive is to go in with a question list, not to wander. Before the session, write the five or six spatial decisions that are genuinely open and that scale would inform - is this ceiling high enough, does this sightline work, is this corridor wide enough - and drive the review to answer them. Wandering admiration produces enthusiasm; a question list produces decisions. And be honest about what VR is not best for: fine 2D detail, exact dimensions you would scale off a drawing, and colour-critical decisions on an imperfectly-calibrated headset. Use VR for the felt, spatial, at-scale questions it uniquely answers, and keep the drawings for the rest.

Capturing findings so the session survives itself
A review that lives only in people's memories is half-wasted. The moment someone in the headset says this beam is too low or I cannot see the garden from here, that finding needs to be captured in place or it evaporates when the headset comes off. This is why annotation and markup are core, not optional. In an immersive review you want to be able to drop a marker, note or measurement exactly where the problem is - a floating pin on the low beam, a comment anchored to the blocked window - so the finding is tied to its location in 3D rather than to a vague verbal memory.
Several routes give you this. Purpose-built immersive-review tools carry proper VR markup, measurement and issue-tracking; within Unreal you can build a simple Blueprint annotation system - a controller button that spawns a labelled marker or a note where you point - using exactly the interactivity skills from Module 7. At minimum, capture screenshots or a recording from inside the headset at each finding, and have a note-taker outside watching a mirrored view on the monitor and logging each issue with its location as it is called out. The mirrored desktop view is genuinely important: it lets the rest of the team see what the wearer sees, keeps everyone in the conversation, and gives the scribe something to point at.
The workflow that ties it together is a loop: prepare (question list, scene at verified scale, options ready to toggle) -> immerse (walk the questions, not the whole building aimlessly) -> annotate (mark each finding in place) -> capture (screenshots/notes tied to location) -> iterate (take the marked-up findings back into the model, change the design, and if it matters, review again). That last step is what closes the loop and makes VR part of the design process rather than a one-off show. A marked-up finding that never returns to the model was just entertainment.
Multi-user review: standing in the design together
The most powerful form of VR review is collaborative - two or more people in the same virtual building at once, each as an avatar, seeing each other, pointing, talking and deciding together. This changes the social dynamic entirely. Instead of one person narrating a walkthrough while others watch a screen, the architect and client stand in the room together: you can point at the actual beam, gesture at the actual sightline, and watch where the client walks and what draws their eye. Shared presence turns a presentation into a conversation, and it is where VR most clearly beats a screen-share.
Crucially, multi-user review can be co-located or remote. Co-located, everyone is in the same physical room on a local network - simplest, and wonderful for a design crit. Remote, participants join from different cities entirely, each in their own headset, meeting inside the model - which is transformative for a client in another country or a consultant on another continent, and a genuine draw for practices serving a diaspora clientele. Tools in this space include Unreal's own multi-user capabilities and dedicated collaborative-review platforms; the common thread is a shared, synchronised scene where everyone sees the same building and each other's avatars and pointers in real time.
Collaboration adds requirements you must plan for. Everyone needs adequate hardware and a comfortable setup (the comfort lesson applies to every participant, and the least experienced sets the pace). Voice and a way to point - a laser pointer or a shared marker - are essential so people can refer to that thing unambiguously. Someone should facilitate, guiding the group through the question list so the session does not dissolve into everyone wandering off separately. And network performance matters: a synchronised multi-user session over the internet adds latency and bandwidth demands on top of the per-user 90fps budget. Plan the hardware, rehearse the join process, and have a fallback (a screen-shared single-user view) if a participant cannot get in - nothing deflates a client review like ten minutes of can you hear me.

The etiquette and workflow of a review people trust
The difference between a VR review that a client remembers as impressive-and-useful and one they remember as awkward is mostly etiquette and preparation - the human layer around the technology. Start with onboarding: never put a first-timer straight into a decision-critical walk. Give them two minutes to acclimatise - how to look around, how to teleport, how to stop - with a spotter beside them and the comfort defaults (seated, teleport, snap-turn) already set. A client fumbling with controls is not judging your design; get them comfortable first.
Run the session with a facilitator and a scribe. The facilitator (often you) guides the wearer gently through the question list - walk over to the window, now look back toward the door, how does that feel - without hijacking their exploration; the point is to hear their reaction, not to lead the witness. The scribe watches the mirrored monitor view and logs every finding with its location. Keep sessions short and focused - twenty to thirty minutes of headset time is plenty before fatigue sets in; you can always run a second pass. Watch the wearer for any sign of discomfort and give them an easy, dignified way to pause or stop. And mind the people outside the headset: a mirrored view keeps them included instead of watching someone stare at nothing.
Finally, be honest about when VR is the right tool at all. It shines for spatial, at-scale, experiential decisions and for building a client's confidence and sense of ownership - letting them stand in and even reconfigure their own space is a trust-builder little else matches. It is overkill for a quick material sign-off (a real-time desktop view or a render does fine) and it is not a substitute for drawings, documentation or the exact-dimension decisions those carry. The mature practice reaches for VR when embodied scale genuinely changes the answer, captures what it finds, feeds it back into the model, and uses the ordinary tools for everything else. Used that way, immersive review stops being a novelty and becomes one of the sharpest instruments in the studio.

Workshop — run a real immersive design review
Take your comfortable, truthfully-scaled scene and run an actual review against a question list, capturing findings and feeding them back. Add a simple annotation marker and, if you can, a second participant.

- 1Write a question list before you start: five or six genuinely open spatial decisions this scene could inform - a specific ceiling height, a sightline, a corridor width, a reach. These drive the whole review.
- 2Onboard your reviewer: two minutes to learn look/teleport/stop, seated with snap-turn, spotter beside them. Only then begin. Keep a mirrored view on the monitor for the note-taker.
- 3Facilitate them through the question list without leading - 'walk to the window, now look back' - and have the scribe log every reaction with its location. Toggle a day/night or material option (from Module 7) to see how it changes a judgement.
- 4Capture each finding in place: build or use a simple Blueprint marker that spawns a labelled pin where you point, and take a screenshot per issue. Aim to keep headset time under about 30 minutes.
- 5Close the loop: take two of the marked-up findings back into the model, make the change, and note what you would re-review. If you have a second headset or machine, repeat one finding as a multi-user session and compare the collaborative dynamic to the solo one.
You’ll walk away with
A short review report: the question list, findings captured with their locations (screenshots or marker notes), at least two changes made to the model in response, and a reflection on whether VR genuinely changed a decision versus merely impressed.

Run reviews to a question list and they change decisions; run them as walkthroughs and they only impress. Go in with the five or six open spatial questions scale would inform, facilitate the client through them without leading, and capture every finding in place so it returns to the model. Multi-user - co-located for a crit, remote for a distant client - lets you stand in the design together and point at the actual problem. That shared, at-scale conversation is where VR earns its keep and builds a client's trust and sense of ownership.
VR review is where a client stops being presented to and starts co-deciding their space. Stand in the room together, switch finishes and lighting live with the configurator options from Module 7, and let them feel a clearance or reach a shelf themselves. Capture each reaction - too dark here, this island is too tight - anchored to its location, then take it back into the model. A client who reconfigured their own kitchen in VR owns the result in a way no moodboard achieves.
Facilitating a good immersive review is a distinct, hireable skill on top of building the scene. Practise the loop - prepare a question list, onboard a tester, guide without leading, capture findings in place, feed them back. Set up a simple multi-user session and a Blueprint annotation marker so you can show, not just describe, the collaborative workflow.
