Taking a render to print and presentation resolution with Magnific, Topaz and tiled diffusion - adding believable detail without inventing lies
Your controlled render is perfect - and 1024 pixels wide. The board is A1. AI upscaling is how you cross that gap without a re-render.
Diffusion tools love to output small, soft images. That is fine on screen and fatal on an A1 board or a two-metre exhibition print, where every soft edge and mushy texture is magnified. AI upscaling is the step that takes a good small image to a crisp large one - and, in its more aggressive forms, invents new detail as it goes.
That inventiveness is a double-edged gift. A creative upscaler can add believable brick grain, fabric weave and foliage that were never in the original - genuinely useful, and genuinely risky, because the same mechanism will hallucinate a doorknob, garble a sign, or grow a sixth finger on a figure. This lesson treats upscaling as two different jobs - enlarging and inventing detail - and teaches you to know which one you are asking for, and to catch what the AI slipped in.

Two different jobs: enlarge versus invent
"Upscaling" hides two distinct operations, and confusing them is the root of most trouble.
The first is enlargement: increasing pixel dimensions while keeping the image faithful - more pixels, same content, cleaner edges. This is what you want when your render is correct and simply too small. Traditional interpolation blurs when pushed; AI enlargers are trained to reconstruct sharp, plausible edges instead, so a 1024px frame becomes a clean 4096px one that still shows exactly what you rendered.
The second is detail synthesis: the upscaler doesn't just enlarge, it adds texture and micro-detail that were never present - individual bricks, blades of grass, wood grain, fabric fibres. This is where tools like Magnific earn their reputation: an underwhelming render can come back looking richly photographic. It is also where the danger lives, because synthesised detail is invented, not observed, and the model has no idea what is architecturally true.
The practical rule: decide which job you need before you upscale. If the image must stay accurate - a planning submission, a documented material - lean toward enlargement with minimal invention. If it is an atmospheric hero shot where richness matters more than pixel-truth, you can let detail synthesis run harder. Most tools blend the two on a single creativity (or detail/HDR) slider, so knowing which end you want tells you where to set it.

The tools and the creativity slider
A handful of tools dominate architectural upscaling in 2026. Match the tool to the job: Topaz or low-creativity enlargement when accuracy rules, Magnific or high-creativity tiling when you want drama and can afford to police it. And upscale from the best source you have - a clean, correct small image upscales far better than a flawed one, because the AI amplifies whatever is already there, mistakes included.
Resolution maths for print and presentation
Knowing your target resolution stops you upscaling too little (soft output) or too much (wasted time and heightened artefacts). The governing number for print is DPI - dots per inch - and the standard for quality print is 300 DPI; large-format prints viewed from a distance can drop to 150 DPI.

First, aspect ratio: upscaling only multiplies pixels, it does not re-crop, so frame for your final proportion in the render, not after. Second, file format: keep a high-quality master (PNG or maximum-quality JPEG/TIFF) for print; re-compressing an upscaled image hard will throw away the detail you just paid for. When in doubt, upscale to slightly more than you need and scale down - downscaling is lossless-looking, while enlarging further is not. Getting these numbers right once, for the boards and screens you actually use, saves endless guesswork.

A realistic upscaling workflow
In practice, upscaling is less a single click than a small sequence of decisions, and getting the order right saves both time and grief. The first decision is source quality: because every upscaler amplifies whatever is already present, the single biggest lever is feeding it a clean, correct, well-composed base image. Time spent fixing composition, colour and obvious errors at small size pays back many times over at large size, where the same flaws are magnified and harder to repair. Never upscale to rescue an image you have not yet resolved.
The second decision is tool per image, not per project. A mixed deck often wants different treatment frame by frame: a documented material board goes through a conservative low-creativity enlarger (Topaz or a low-denoise tiled pass) to stay faithful, while an atmospheric hero can take an aggressive Magnific pass for richness. Treat the choice as a per-image judgement about how much invention the picture can honestly carry, rather than running everything through one setting.
The third is region-aware upscaling. Rather than dialling the whole frame's creativity down to protect one fragile area - a sign, a face, a run of fine mullions - upscale the bulk of the image at the creativity it deserves and treat the fragile region separately at low creativity, then composite. This gives you richness where it helps and fidelity where it matters, instead of a compromise that serves neither.
Finally, mind the output discipline beyond print. For web and portfolio, upscale then downscale to the exact display size for crispness without bloated files; for a presentation deck, size to the projector or screen resolution, not to print DPI, so slides stay light. Always keep a high-quality master before compression, and remember that upscaling multiplies pixels but never re-crops, so your final aspect ratio must be decided at render time. A tidy rule of thumb: resolve small, choose the tool per image, protect fragile regions, upscale last, then downscale to the exact target. Follow it and upscaling becomes a quiet, dependable finisher rather than a lottery of hallucinated detail.
One habit ties the sequence together: always compare before and after at full size. It is easy to be seduced by a dramatic thumbnail and miss that the upscaler quietly rewrote a facade, so put the original and the result side by side at 100 percent and confirm the enlargement added detail you approve of rather than detail you now have to explain. Keep an eye on cost and time too - a big Magnific or tiled pass on a full deck is neither instant nor free, so settle your creativity setting on one representative frame before committing the whole set. Resolve, decide, verify, then commit: that discipline is what separates a clean, print-ready set from a folder of over-cooked surprises.

Artefacts to watch - and where upscaling sits
Aggressive upscaling invents detail, and invented detail lies. Train your eye to catch the usual offenders. Hallucinated text is the classic tell - signage, book spines and labels turn into convincing gibberish, because the model mimics letterforms without reading them. Warped geometry creeps in when a detail upscaler reinterprets a clean line as ornament, softening a crisp mullion into moulding or bending a straight edge. Over-sharpening and the HDR look - crunchy halos, unnatural micro-contrast, a plasticky sheen - is the signature of the creativity slider pushed too far, and it reads as fake even to non-designers. Faces and figures are notoriously fragile: entourage people gain extra fingers, melted eyes, impossible limbs, so scale-fix or replace them deliberately. And repeating textures can tile into obvious patterns - identical bricks, cloned leaves.
Because of all this, upscaling belongs last in the pipeline, after the image is composed, corrected and approved at small size - you do not want to upscale a frame you will then edit, and you do not want to invent detail into pixels you have not yet judged. Zoom to 100% and pan the whole image before you commit; artefacts hide at full resolution and vanish in a thumbnail. If a critical region misbehaves, upscale it separately at lower creativity and composite, rather than dialling the whole image down. Used with this discipline, upscaling is the quiet finisher that makes an AI render survive contact with a large board - amplifying what is good, provided you have first made sure what is there is true.

You will size a render for an actual print target, upscale it two ways, and audit both for hallucinated detail. The aim is to internalise the resolution maths and the artefact-hunting habit that keep upscaled images honest.

Detail synthesis is tempting for interiors - fabric weave, timber grain, rug pile - and risky for the same reason. A creative upscale can make a scheme sing, but it will also invent finishes you did not specify and cannot source. Upscale from a clean base, keep creativity moderate on client-facing work, and audit textiles, joinery and any labelled products at full zoom. Replace or repair AI figures rather than letting a six-fingered guest ruin an otherwise beautiful room.
Upscaling is how a modest render becomes a portfolio- and board-ready image without a render farm. But reviewers spot the over-cooked HDR look instantly, and hallucinated text or melted entourage will undercut an otherwise strong sheet. Learn the resolution maths early so your boards print crisply, keep the creativity slider honest, and treat upscaling as the final, judged step - never a way to rescue an image you have not actually resolved.
