Emergency Lighting Calculator
When the mains fail, emergency (escape) luminaires keep the escape route visible. Enter the route length, the maximum spacing that holds the required lux, and any open “anti-panic” area to get an indicative luminaire count. This is an indicative planning estimate; it runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
The route figure spaces luminaires along the path and adds one at the far end. It does not include the extra fittings you also need at each exit door, stair, change of direction & level, and near firefighting equipment & call points — add those separately.
Indicative planning estimate — not a compliant fire design or a statutory calculation. The real requirement depends on your occupancy classification, building height and the AHJ. Fittings must hold their output for the required duration on battery (commonly 1–2 hours on emergency supply — verify NBC/IS) and be tested regularly (monthly flick-test, annual full-duration). A licensed fire consultant does the lux design and the local fire officer / AHJ signs off — the design principle here follows NBC (SP 7:2026) / NBC Part 4 generically, and a wrong number can cost lives. Dark escape routes cause falls and panic; verify everything.
