Where the spend goes

For your 1,500 sqft garden in a Tier-2 city at Mid finish, hardscape and softscape usually carry the bulk of capital cost, while irrigation and lighting are smaller but recurring-impact line items.

Maintenance is recurring — lawn-heavy gardens cost the most to run. Trimming the lawn share lowers both water and labour.

How landscaping costs are built up

A garden budget is the sum of several independent systems, not a single per-sqft number. Site preparation (clearing, levelling, soil amendment) and drainage apply across the whole plot and are easy to underestimate — poor drainage is the most common cause of failed planting in Indian gardens.

Hardscape — paving, decks, boundary finishes and pergolas — is typically the single largest line, especially at Premium tier where natural stone replaces concrete. Softscape (trees, shrubs, groundcover) costs scale sharply with plant maturity: instant-impact mature trees cost many times what saplings do.

Lawn is deceptively cheap to install but expensive to run — it drives most of the water and gardener cost. In hot-dry and warm-humid Indian climates, a smaller lawn paired with native beds and gravel often gives a better cost-of-ownership. Irrigation (drip + automation) and garden lighting are modest capital items that meaningfully reduce labour and improve plant survival.

City tier adjusts for local labour and material rates. The estimate adds an 8% design & supervision allowance and a 10% contingency, then brackets a low–high range. Treat the output as a 2026 planning range, not a contractor quotation.
