Heat Detector Placement Planner

Heat detectors suit kitchens, garages, boiler and plant rooms and dusty spaces where a smoke detector would nuisance-alarm. Enter the room and a typical maximum spacing to get an indicative flat-ceiling grid — how many detectors and how far apart. Because a heat detector must feel a local temperature rise, it protects a smaller square than a smoke detector and warns later. Choose fixed-temperature or rate-of-rise heads for the room. Heat detectors react only once it is already hot, so never use them in sleeping areas or on escape routes, where early smoke warning saves lives — use smoke detectors there.

This is an indicative planning estimate, not a compliant fire design or a statutory calculation. It assumes a single flat, smooth, unobstructed ceiling and one detector type, and ignores beams, slopes, ventilation, high ceilings and hot-work zones. The actual requirement depends on the occupancy classification, the building height and the Authority Having Jurisdiction, and is governed in India by the National Building Code — NBC (SP 7:2026), NBC Part 4 — and detection standard IS 2189. A wrong number here can cost lives: a licensed fire consultant must design the detection and alarm system, and the local fire officer / AHJ signs it off.
