It assumes a single flat, smooth, unobstructed ceiling and one detector type, and ignores beams, slopes, ventilation, high ceilings and hot-work zones. The actual requirement depends on the occupancy classification, the building height and the Authority Having Jurisdiction, and is governed in India by the National Building Code — NBC (SP 7:2026), NBC Part 4 — and detection standard IS 2189. A wrong number here can cost lives: a licensed fire consultant must design the detection and alarm system, and the local fire officer / AHJ signs it off.
