Bedroom Door Design in India: Materials, Sizes, Finishes, Privacy and Cost (2026)
How to choose and design a bedroom door for Indian homes — privacy, light-noise control, finishes that match the room, the right 900x2100 internal door, locks and ₹ budget.
The bedroom door is the most-used internal door in an Indian home, and the one people think least about. It opens and shuts a dozen times a day, it has to give you real privacy from a joint-family corridor, it should keep out passage light and TV noise while you sleep, and it still has to look like it belongs in the room. Get it wrong and you live with a hollow rattly shutter that warps in the monsoon and lets every footstep through. Get it right and the door simply disappears into a calm room. This guide covers exactly how to choose and design a bedroom door for Indian conditions — material, size, finish, lock and budget — and it is a spoke of our room-by-room interior doors hub. For the big picture, see the complete guide to home doors in India.
What a bedroom door actually has to do
Before you fall for a Pinterest finish, fix the four jobs in priority order. A bedroom door is an interior door, so it is not fighting rain or burglars the way a main door is. Its real brief is comfort and quiet.
- Privacy — a positive latch and a privacy lock so the door does not drift open and cannot be opened from outside on a whim. This matters most in joint families and homes with domestic help.
- Light and sound control — block the strip of corridor light under the door and dull passage conversation, TV and traffic so the room reads as restful. A solid-core leaf with a bottom seal does most of this.
- Looks that match the room — finish, colour and proportion should sit with the wardrobe, bed and wall, not shout. Bedrooms reward calm.
- Durability with light weight — a daily-use leaf that resists Indian humidity and termites without being so heavy it sags the hinges over ten years.
Notice that strength against forced entry is NOT on this list. That is a main-door and door-security concern; spending on a steel-cored bedroom door is wasted money.
Material: what to put inside the leaf
For an internal bedroom door, the choice is between three sensible families. Avoid a true hollow-core door for the master and any room next to a noisy corridor — it is the cheapest but the loudest.
| Bedroom door option | Core / make | Privacy & sound | Humidity / termite | Indicative cost (shutter only) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laminated flush door (factory, IS 2202) | Block-board / particle core, laminate faces | Decent privacy; modest sound unless solid-core | Good if BWP/BWR grade; seal edges | ₹1,200-4,000 |
| Veneer / designer flush door | Engineered core, natural veneer face | Same as flush; premium look | Good with sealed veneer | ₹4,000-9,000 |
| Membrane / PVC-pressed door | MDF skin, moulded membrane finish | Light to medium | Avoid in damp; MDF swells if exposed | ₹3,000-7,000 |
| Solid-core / engineered solid door | Dense particle or solid timber strips | Best privacy and sound (recommended for master) | Very good | ₹4,000-12,000 |
| Panelled solid-wood door | Solid / engineered stiles & panels | Good; heavier, warm | Excellent in teak/CP teak | ₹6,000-20,000+ |
Costs are material + make only; frame (chowkat), hardware and fitting are extra, and add ~18% GST. They are indicative and vary by city and vendor.
Our default recommendation for an Indian bedroom: a factory-made laminated solid-core flush door in BWR/BWP grade. It is dimensionally stable in the monsoon, takes any laminate or veneer finish, gives real acoustic mass, and costs far less than carved solid wood. For the master bedroom, pay the small premium for a solid-core rather than a hollow flush so the room is genuinely quiet. Compare cores in detail in flush doors in India and the door materials comparison. Teak lovers should read teak wood doors — beautiful but overkill for an internal leaf unless you want the warmth.
Standard bedroom door size
The Indian internal bedroom door is 900 mm wide x 2100 mm high (3' x 7'), per common practice and NBC 2016. That 900 mm leaf is also the friendly width that gives roughly 810-850 mm of clear opening — enough for furniture and broadly aligned with the RPwD Harmonised Guidelines 2021 if you ever need step-free access. The frame adds about 50-75 mm around the leaf, so cut your masonry opening accordingly. Keep any threshold under 12 mm.
Do not undersize a bedroom door to 750 mm to "save space" — you will scrape every mattress and wardrobe carton through it for years. Full size charts for every room are in door size standards in India.
Finishes and design styles
This is where the bedroom door earns its keep visually. The leaf shape is the same; the face is everything.
- Flush minimal — a single laminate or veneer plane, no mouldings. The contemporary default; pairs with handleless wardrobes. Use a matt laminate to hide fingerprints. See laminate doors and door laminate designs for surfaces.
- Panelled — two, four or six panels for a classic or traditional room. Reads warm and substantial; suits teak and CP-teak interiors and homes that lean to traditional Indian doors.
- Fluted / grooved — vertical reeded grooves, very 2026; adds texture and a soft acoustic scatter without colour noise. Currently the most-requested designer face.
- Two-tone — a darker laminate framing a lighter centre, or a contrast strip down the lock stile; an easy way to make a flat flush door feel designed. More ideas in two-tone door designs and door colour ideas.
- Glass-insert — a slim frosted or fluted glass strip for a child's room (so a parent can see a light is on) or to borrow light into a dark internal bedroom. Use frosted/obscure glass for privacy, never clear. For a master, skip glass — it kills privacy and sound.

Light and sound: making the bedroom quiet
A bedroom door that looks great but lets in corridor light and chatter has failed its main job. Three cheap moves transform a flush door into a sleep-friendly one:
1. Solid core, not hollow. Mass blocks sound. A solid-core flush leaf is the single biggest improvement and costs only a couple of thousand rupees more than a hollow one.
2. Perimeter gasket. A thin compressible seal in the frame rebate closes the gaps at the top and sides where most sound and light leak.
3. Door-bottom seal. An automatic drop-down seal or a simple brush strip closes the undercut gap — this also kills that bright line of corridor light on the floor.
Together these turn a normal bedroom door into a genuinely restful one for a few hundred rupees of hardware. If your bedroom faces a busy road, a stairwell or a home-theatre room, go further with the full treatment in soundproof doors in India, which covers seals, sweeps and acoustic cores in depth.
Handle and lock: choose a privacy set
A bedroom needs a privacy lock, not a key lock and not a passage (latch-only) set. A privacy function locks from inside with a thumb-turn and has an emergency release (a coin-slot or small pin) so it can be opened from outside in a crisis — important for children's and elderly rooms. Avoid keyed locks on internal bedrooms: keys get lost and a panicked child can lock themselves in.
Handle styles that suit bedrooms:
- Lever-on-rose with privacy turn — the everyday choice; easy for kids and elders, available in matt black, brushed steel and rose gold to match the wardrobe handles.
- Slim vertical pull + magnetic tubular latch — for a minimal handleless look, paired with a separate small privacy bolt.
- Mortise lever set — heavier, more solid feel for premium rooms.
Match the finish to your wardrobe and switch plates, not to the main door. Mount the lever at about 1000 mm. Full hardware guidance is in the door hardware guide; smart latches are usually unnecessary inside a bedroom but covered in smart door locks.
Colour ideas for bedroom doors
The safest, most timeless approach is to let the door echo a tone already in the room — the wardrobe shutter, the bed laminate or the flooring. A few combinations that work in Indian homes:
- Walnut or teak laminate against off-white walls — warm, classic, hides marks.
- Soft matt white or ivory flush door — disappears into a light room, makes a small bedroom feel bigger.
- Charcoal or graphite with rose-gold or matt-black handle — quietly luxe for a master.
- Sage, olive or muted blue two-tone — a gentle accent for a contemporary room without going loud.
- Fluted oak for a kids' or guest room — texture without colour commitment.
Avoid high-gloss white in dry-dusting climates (every fingerprint shows) and very dark gloss in hot bedrooms (heat and smudges). More palettes in door colour ideas.
Budget: what a good bedroom door costs installed
Here is a realistic all-in figure for one bedroom door in a metro, before GST. Treat as indicative; it varies by city and vendor.
| Tier | Leaf | Frame (chowkat) | Hardware | Fitting labour | All-in (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | Laminated flush ₹2,000 | WPC readymade ₹2,000 | Lever privacy set ₹1,500 | ₹1,000 | ₹6,500-8,000 |
| Recommended | Solid-core laminate flush ₹4,500 | Sal/teak ₹3,500 | Mortise privacy + seals ₹3,000 | ₹1,500 | ₹12,000-14,000 |
| Premium | Veneer / fluted designer ₹8,000 | CP-teak ₹5,000 | Designer set + acoustic seals ₹6,000 | ₹2,500 | ₹20,000-24,000+ |
Add ~18% GST. The "recommended" tier — a solid-core laminated flush door with a privacy mortise set and perimeter plus bottom seals — is the sweet spot for most Indian master bedrooms: quiet, durable, good-looking, and a fraction of a carved-teak price. Frequently asked questions
What is the standard bedroom door size in India?
900 mm x 2100 mm (3' x 7') for the leaf, per common practice and NBC 2016, giving roughly 810-850 mm clear opening. The frame adds about 50-75 mm around the leaf. See door size standards in India.
Which is the best material for a bedroom door?
A factory-made laminated solid-core flush door in BWR/BWP grade is the best all-round choice — stable in the monsoon, termite-resistant, quiet, and far cheaper than carved solid wood. Hollow-core is fine only for low-traffic rooms where noise does not matter.
How do I stop corridor light and noise coming under my bedroom door?
Use a solid-core leaf, add a thin perimeter gasket in the frame rebate, and fit a door-bottom seal or drop-down sweep. Those three cheap moves close the gaps. For a noisy road or home theatre, follow soundproof doors in India.
Should a bedroom door have a key lock?
No. Use a privacy lock (thumb-turn inside with an emergency release outside), not a keyed lock. Keys get lost and a child can lock themselves in; the emergency release lets a parent open it in seconds.
Is glass okay in a bedroom door?
Only frosted or fluted obscure glass, and mainly for a child's or dark internal room where you want to borrow light or check on a sleeping child. For a master bedroom, skip glass — it weakens both privacy and sound. See glass panel door designs.
