Unit 1 — What a Thesis Is
LiveThe thesis as the capstone that consolidates the whole degree; why it is research AND design — an argument, not just a building; how it follows the dissertation prelude; the journey from topic to jury; and how to approach a year-long independent project well.
Unit 2 — Topic, Issue & Programme
LiveChoosing a topic and area you can sustain and resource; framing the ISSUE, aim, hypothesis and objectives that give the thesis a spine; testing a topic's viability; and defining the programme and design brief — what the project will contain and why.
Unit 3 — Research, Case Studies & Site
LiveThe research that grounds the design — literature, theory and standards; case studies of built examples that address the issue, analysed not just described; and site selection and analysis — the context, climate, by-laws and character that drive the design.
Unit 4 — From Research to Design
LiveThe hardest move — turning research, case studies and site into a building; analysis to synthesis; developing a concept that answers the issue; iterating the design; and weighing the social, economic and environmental aspects that a mature project must address.
Unit 5 — Deliverables & the Jury
LiveProducing the final deliverables — drawings, the project report, the model and the presentation; telling a clear story from issue to response; and defending the project at the jury / viva, where your thinking, not perfection, is assessed.
