Walk into almost any Indian building - an apartment tower, a shop, a small office, a hotel - and there is a fair chance it has a fire-alarm panel on the wall that was installed years ago, passed once for the Fire NOC, and has not been touched since. Battery standby - the commonest silent failure

If you remember one technical thing from this guide, remember the battery. The standby battery is the system's only power source during a mains failure, and in India mains failures are routine and often coincide with the very electrical faults that start fires. A panel that looks perfectly healthy while running on mains can go completely dark the instant the grid drops - because the battery behind it quietly died two years ago and nobody replaced it. The reason the battery is so dangerous is that its failure is invisible until the exact moment it matters. A weak battery holds the panel's indicators green as long as the mains keeps it topped up. The system only reveals it is dead when the mains disappears - which is precisely when you need it. So the battery cannot be judged by looking at the panel; it has to be actively tested under load, on a schedule, by the AMC, and replaced as a consumable.

Isolating a zone has exactly one legitimate use in maintenance: a temporary, logged, contractor-controlled step during servicing or hot works, restored the moment the work is done. The correct fix for repeated false alarms is always to remove the cause - relocate a badly sited detector, change a smoke detector to a heat detector where steam or cooking is the problem, clean fouled units, or have the contractor re-survey the zoning. What a good AMC covers and how to hold it accountable

An AMC is only as good as its scope and your oversight.
