What is the golden mean in room design?

The golden mean is the proportion 1 : 1.618. A room whose long side is about 1.6 times its short side tends to feel naturally balanced — neither boxy nor corridor-like. It's a safety net, not a rule: many comfortable rooms sit a little either side of it.

What room ratio feels too long?

Beyond roughly 1 : 2.4 a room reads as a "freight train" — long and narrow, with furniture stranded along the walls and awkward circulation down the middle. The tool flags this and suggests widening the room or zoning it into two areas.

Can a room be too big?

Yes. A room much larger than typical for its use can feel cold and cavernous, like a hotel lobby. The tool compares your area to a realistic target for each room type and warns when bigger has stopped being better — cozy is a compliment.
