Wayfinding & Environmental Graphics

Making places legible, navigable and communicative — why wayfinding is how a place speaks (the building first, signage completing it); how people find their way; the wayfinding system and its information types; signage types and the sign family; designing the sign (typography, legibility, symbols, colour); placement, materials and fabrication; environmental graphic design, supergraphics and placemaking; accessible and inclusive wayfinding; wayfinding by place type (healthcare, transport, retail, campus and urban); digital and indoor navigation; and delivery, the sign schedule and practice. Clarity-first and India-rooted (multilingual, multi-script, low-literacy), for architects, interior designers and students — treating benchmarks as figures to verify, and deferring binding accessibility, fire-signage and fabrication specifics to the codes, specialists and fabricators.

0.1 · Wayfinding Is How a Place Speaks

Wayfinding is not just signage - it is how a whole place communicates where you are and where to go, and the building speaks first through its layout and legibility. This lesson reframes wayfinding as a design discipline that begins long before a single sign, and sets up the course.

Start with Module 0 — Why Wayfinding Matters

What this course covers

  • 1How People Find Their Way. Design starts with how people navigate: cognition and the mental map, legible space (paths, nodes, landmarks), how people actually navigate, and the anxious feeling of being lost.
  • 2The Wayfinding System. Wayfinding is a system, not a pile of signs: the four types of wayfinding information, decision points and the journey, information hierarchy and progressive disclosure, and the wayfinding strategy and plan.
  • 3Signage Types & the Sign Family. The vocabulary of signs: identification signs, directional signs, orientation signs and maps, and regulatory and safety signs held together as one coherent sign family.
  • 4Designing the Sign. The craft of a legible sign: typography for signage, legibility, size and viewing distance, symbols, pictograms and arrows, and colour, contrast and coding.

Module 0 · Why Wayfinding Matters

Live

Before any sign: how a place speaks and how wayfinding completes what architecture cannot; the real human and business cost of getting lost; how wayfinding, signage and environmental graphic design relate; and the shape of a wayfinding and EGD project.

Module 1 · How People Find Their Way

Live

Design starts with how people navigate: cognition and the mental map, legible space (paths, nodes, landmarks), how people actually navigate, and the anxious feeling of being lost.

2

Module 2 · The Wayfinding System

Live

Wayfinding is a system, not a pile of signs: the four types of wayfinding information, decision points and the journey, information hierarchy and progressive disclosure, and the wayfinding strategy and plan.

3

Module 3 · Signage Types & the Sign Family

Live

The vocabulary of signs: identification signs, directional signs, orientation signs and maps, and regulatory and safety signs held together as one coherent sign family.

4

Module 4 · Designing the Sign

Live

The craft of a legible sign: typography for signage, legibility, size and viewing distance, symbols, pictograms and arrows, and colour, contrast and coding.

5

Module 5 · Placement & the Physical Sign

Live

A sign is a physical object in real space: sign placement and sightlines, the sign as a physical object, materials, fabrication and mounting, and lighting and durability.

6

Module 6 · Environmental Graphic Design

Live

Beyond the sign, the whole environment communicates: brand and identity in space, supergraphics and dimensional graphics, experiential and placemaking graphics, and storytelling in the environment.

7

Module 7 · Accessible & Inclusive Wayfinding

Live

Wayfinding that works for everyone: inclusive wayfinding principles, tactile, braille and audible wayfinding, colour vision, contrast and low vision, and multilingual and cross-cultural wayfinding.

8

Module 8 · Wayfinding by Place Type

Live

Every place has its own wayfinding challenge: healthcare and hospital wayfinding, transport and transit wayfinding, retail, mall and workplace wayfinding, and campus, civic and urban wayfinding.

9

Module 9 · Digital & the Future

Live

Wayfinding in the age of the phone: digital signage and dynamic systems, apps, indoor navigation and the phone, integrating physical and digital, and data, smart wayfinding and the future.

10

Module 10 · Delivery & Practice

Live

Turning a strategy into installed, working wayfinding: the wayfinding design process, audit, strategy and testing, documentation, the sign schedule and fabrication, and becoming a wayfinding and EGD designer.
