The Wayfinding Strategy & Plan
Before a single sign is drawn, a wayfinding system needs a strategy - an organising logic of zones, colour and naming; an information plan that maps the four types onto the building's decision points; and a sign location plan - because a pile of well-made signs with no strategy behind them is not a wayfinding system
A pile of beautifully made signs is not a wayfinding system. The system is the strategy behind them - and the strategy comes first.
It is tempting, once you understand information types, decision points and hierarchy, to jump straight to designing signs. Resist it. The most common way large wayfinding projects fail is by starting at the signs - commissioning a handsome sign family, then trying to place it around a building that has no coherent organising logic - and the result is a collection of individually competent signs that do not add up to a navigable whole. A wayfinding system is not a set of signs; it is a strategy, of which signs are only the final, visible output. The strategy is the thinking that makes all those signs consistent, economical and coherent - and it must be settled before the signs are drawn.
This lesson pulls the whole module together into that strategy. It has three layers, built in order. First, the organising logic: how the place will be structured and named so it can be talked about at all - its zones, a colour-coding scheme, a clear and consistent naming and numbering system. Second, the information plan: mapping the four information types onto the building's real decision points and disclosure levels - deciding what information appears where, before deciding what sign carries it. Third, the sign location plan: locating and numbering every sign on the drawing, which becomes the bridge to fabrication and the sign schedule (Module 10). Above all this sits the reframing the whole course rests on: the strategy is architectural and organisational first, and it is designed early, with the building - not procured as a package at the end. Get the strategy right and the signs almost design themselves; get it wrong and no amount of sign-craft can rescue it.

The organising logic: zones, colour and naming
The foundation of a wayfinding strategy is the organising logic - the underlying structure by which a place is divided, coded and named, so that it can be described and navigated at all. Before you can direct anyone anywhere, the place needs a clear mental structure that everyone - designers, staff and visitors - can share. The core tool is zoning: dividing a large, undifferentiated complex into a small number of legible zones (a hospital into Wards, Diagnostics, Out-patients, Emergency; a campus into precincts; an airport into terminals and piers). Zones give people a coarse, memorable mental map and are the top level of progressive disclosure - you find your zone first, then navigate within it. Good zones align with how the place actually works and how people think about it, not with internal administrative boundaries that mean nothing to a visitor.
Onto that structure the strategy lays two reinforcing systems. Colour-coding assigns each zone (or floor, or route) a distinct colour that then follows a person consistently - the blue zone is blue on the directory, on the directional signs, at the zone entrance, on the department doors - giving a continuous, non-verbal thread that is especially powerful for reassurance and for people who cannot read the local script. Colour-coding is potent but fragile: it works only if the colours are genuinely distinguishable (including for colour-blind users, a Module 7 concern), limited in number, and applied with absolute consistency; a colour scheme that is inconsistent or has too many near-identical hues is worse than none. The second system is a clear, consistent naming and numbering scheme: destinations named in the public's terms (not internal jargon), and a logical numbering of blocks, floors and rooms that nests so an address resolves step by step. Naming is quietly one of the highest-leverage wayfinding decisions - if a place is called three different things on three signs, no craft can fix it.
The crucial point is that the organising logic is largely an architectural and organisational decision, made early and often above the signage designer's pay grade - which is exactly why wayfinding must be involved from the start. Zones follow the plan; a colour or naming scheme imposed late onto a building whose structure fights it will never sit right. When the organising logic is designed together with the architecture - clear zones expressed in the built form, a naming and numbering system agreed across the whole client organisation - the signage that follows is simple and consistent. When it is absent, signs are left to paper over a place with no shared structure, and they cannot. This layer, more than any sign, is where a wayfinding system is won or lost.

The information plan: the four types on the building
With an organising logic in place, the next layer is the information plan: a deliberate mapping of what information appears where across the building - which of the four types, at which decision point, at which disclosure level - decided before, and independently of, what sign will carry it. This is where everything from the earlier lessons comes together on an actual plan. You take the key user journeys and their decision-point maps (lesson 2.2), and for each decision point and destination you specify the information needed: identification here, direction there, confirmation along this link, a regulatory notice at this limit - and at which level of progressive disclosure (zone, floor, room) each belongs. The output is a plan of the building annotated not yet with signs, but with information: this is what a person must be told, here.
Separating the information plan from the sign design is a discipline that pays off repeatedly. It forces the right question first - what does a person need to know at this point? - rather than the premature one - what sign do we put here? It exposes gaps and redundancies while they are cheap to fix (a decision point with no information planned; the same thing planned three times over) and it lets you apply hierarchy and progressive disclosure systematically across the whole building rather than sign by sign. It also makes the system reviewable: a client, an accessibility consultant or a fire specialist can check the information plan against the real journeys and the codes before anything is fabricated. Only once the information plan is settled - every decision point answered, every trail continuous, the amounts ranked and staged - do you decide how each piece of information is delivered: by a sign, a map, a floor graphic, a screen, or by the architecture itself.
The information plan is also where the strategy stays honest about economy and the building doing the work. Mapping information onto the real plan reveals where the architecture already answers a need (a visible destination that needs no directional sign) and where genuine gaps require intervention - so the plan specifies information only where it is actually needed, which is the antidote to the reflex of blanketing a building in signs. It is, in effect, the master specification of the whole system at the level of meaning: a complete, reviewable account of everything the place needs to communicate, decision point by decision point, level by level, before a single sign object is chosen. In India this is also where the multilingual and pictogram strategy is set - which scripts, which symbols, at which points - so that inclusivity is planned into the information from the start rather than bolted onto finished signs.
The sign location plan: from information to placed signs
The third layer turns the information plan into the sign location plan (sometimes a signage location plan or key plan): a drawing of the building on which every sign is located, given a unique reference number, and tied to what it must say and do. Where the information plan says 'direction to the three zones is needed at this concourse decision point', the sign location plan says 'sign S2, a suspended directional sign, here, at this coordinate, carrying these destinations'. Each located sign gets a number that keys it to a line in the eventual sign schedule - the tabulated list of every sign with its type, size, message, materials and finish - which is the document handed to the fabricator and the subject of Module 10. The sign location plan is thus the pivot between design thinking and delivery: it is where the abstract strategy becomes a countable, buildable, costable set of specific signs in specific places.
Because it is drawn from the information plan, the sign location plan inherits the strategy's discipline: signs appear only where information was planned, each is placed at its decision point with the timing and sightlines the placement principles demand (a coordination that must be checked on site and with the architecture, not just on the drawing), and each is typed and sized to deliver its ranked information at the required viewing distance. This is also where the total system becomes visible and manageable as a whole - you can count the signs, see their distribution, catch a decision point that slipped through, spot a stretch where the confirmation trail breaks, and cost the package realistically. A project that never draws a proper sign location plan tends to discover its gaps and clashes only after installation, when they are expensive and disruptive to fix.
It is worth being clear about scope: this lesson is about the strategy and the plans as design instruments - the organising logic, the information plan, the sign location plan - not the full delivery machinery. The detailed sign schedule, the fabrication drawings, the specification, the audit and testing, and the tender and installation process belong to Module 10 (Delivery & Practice), and the binding technical specifics - mounting, structure, illumination, accessible and exit-signage dimensions - are deferred, as ever, to the standards, the specialist consultants and the fabricator or signage engineer. The point here is the shape of the thinking: a coherent strategy produces an information plan, which produces a sign location plan, which flows into delivery - a clean line from organising logic all the way to an installed sign, every step justified by the one before it.

The strategy comes before the signs - and with the building
The through-line of this whole module, and its most important practical lesson, is that the strategy comes before the signs, and it comes with the building, not after it. Everything in the three layers reinforces this. The organising logic is architectural and organisational, set early with the plan and the client. The information plan is decided before sign design, at the level of what people need to know. The sign location plan flows from both, and only then does sign-craft - typography, materials, fabrication - begin. Run in this order, wayfinding is coherent, economical and inclusive, and the signs are the easy last step. Run backwards - starting with a sign family and trying to retrofit a strategy - it fails, because no set of signs can impose an organising logic a building does not have.
This is why the timing of wayfinding in a project matters so much, a theme that returns in Module 10. When the wayfinding designer is engaged at the master-plan and design stage, the strategy can shape the architecture toward legibility (argue for clearer zones, a stronger main route, a better sightline, a workable naming system) and integrate signage zones, mounting and services into the building - and the strategy is cheap to get right because it is still on paper. When wayfinding is left until the building is complete, the strategy has to accept whatever structure the building happens to have, the cheapest and most powerful moves have already been foreclosed, and the designer is reduced to patching - the expensive, second-best outcome this course exists to prevent. The strategy is a design discipline that belongs at the start of the project, not a procurement task at the end.
Held together, the strategy is also what makes a wayfinding system feel like one coherent thing rather than an accumulation. A person moving through a well-strategised place experiences a single, consistent conversation: the same zones, colours and names greet them at the entrance, guide them at every decision point, reassure them along every link, and confirm their arrival - because one organising logic runs through the whole system. That coherence is invisible when it works and glaring when it is missing (the building where every sign seems to belong to a different system). It is the strategy, not the individual signs, that creates it. So the discipline to carry out of this module is simple and demanding: never start at the signs. Start with how the place is organised and named, map what people need to know onto its real journeys, locate the signs that deliver it - and design the whole strategy early, with the architecture, as one system in the service of the person trying to find their way.

Your sign family and environmental graphics are the visible output of the strategy - so insist the strategy exists before you design them. Work from an organising logic and an information plan: express the zone colour-coding and naming consistently, deliver the planned four types at each decision point with the right hierarchy and disclosure, and locate every sign on a sign location plan that keys to the schedule you will hand the fabricator. Resist starting with a beautiful sign family and no logic behind it. Where the strategy is missing on a fit-out, build the minimum organising logic first (zones, a colour and naming scheme) rather than papering over its absence with more signs, and set the multilingual and pictogram approach in the plan, not on finished signs.
