Sign Placement & Sightlines
A sign is only useful where it is seen and at the moment it is needed - so placement is half the design: at the decision point, in the line of sight, at a height the eye already scans, never hidden or lost in clutter, and consistent enough that people learn where to look
You can design a perfect sign and still get it completely wrong - by putting it where nobody is looking at the moment they need it.
Picture the junction in a large hospital where three corridors meet. A visitor carrying an appointment slip slows down, looks up, and scans for guidance - and in that half-second their eyes sweep a predictable arc ahead and slightly above them. If the directional sign sits exactly there, they read it, choose, and walk on without breaking stride. If the same sign - identical typography, identical colour, identical arrows - is mounted around the corner, below a potted plant, or lost among a dozen notices and a fire extinguisher, it may as well not exist. The person hesitates, doubles back, asks a passing nurse. The sign was not badly designed. It was badly placed.
This is the quiet truth of Module 5: where a sign goes matters as much as what it says, and placement is a design decision, not an afterthought left to the installer. A sign works only when it is in the right place (at the point where a decision is made), in the right sightline (where the eye is already looking), at the right height, visible and uncluttered, and placed consistently enough that people learn where to glance. Get those right and a small, quiet signage system carries an entire building; get them wrong and no amount of graphic polish rescues it. This lesson is the first of four on the sign as a thing that lives in real space - and it starts with the most basic question of all: where does the sign belong?

The decision point is where the sign belongs
The governing idea of sign placement comes straight from how people navigate: they move along a path, and at certain moments they must make a choice - turn left or right, go up or straight on, enter here or continue. Those moments are decision points, and a directional sign earns its place by appearing exactly there, just before or at the instant the choice must be made. A sign that answers a question before the traveller has asked it is wasted; a sign that answers it after they have already had to guess is worse than wasted, because it confirms their anxiety. The designer's job is to map the journey as a sequence of decisions and to put the right information at each one - no sooner, no later.
This has a direct consequence that beginners consistently miss: the number and position of signs follows the plan, not a tidy instinct to space them evenly. A long, straight, unambiguous corridor needs almost nothing - perhaps a single reassurance part-way along ('yes, still this way') so the traveller does not fear they have overshot. A complex node where four routes converge may need a substantial, well-composed directory and a clear directional sign, because several decisions happen in one place. Signs clustered where nothing is decided are clutter; signs missing where a real choice occurs are a failure. You place signs by walking the journey in the mind of a first-time, anxious visitor and marking every point where they would genuinely pause and wonder which way.
Decision points are not only junctions. They include the threshold where someone first enters and must orient themselves, the lift lobby where they arrive on a new floor and have lost their bearings, the fork where a route splits, and the destination itself, which must confirm arrival ('Radiology - you are here'). A useful discipline is to distinguish the decision to be made (where do I go now?) from the confirmation to be given (am I still right?) and the arrival to be marked (I have reached it). Each wants a different kind of sign in a different position. The through-line of the whole course applies here too: if the architecture has already made the decision obvious - a clear sightline straight to the destination - you may need no sign at all. The sign completes what the space cannot say, placed precisely where the space falls silent.
Signs live at DECISION POINTS, not spaced evenly. Walk the journey as an anxious first-timer; mark every 'which way?' moment.
In the sightline, at a height the eye scans
A sign at the right decision point still fails if it sits outside the traveller's line of sight. People do not read a corridor wall methodically; as they move, their gaze settles in a fairly narrow cone ahead and a little above the horizontal, and it is drawn to the far end of a view and to points of contrast. Good placement works with this. Directional signs at a junction are often best mounted overhead, suspended or projecting into the circulation, so they float in the sightline above the heads of a crowd and can be read from a distance as the traveller approaches - which is why airports and metros, where crowds would hide a wall sign, lean so heavily on overhead gantries. Identification signs, by contrast, belong beside the thing they name, at a height you read up close, because you approach a room before you need its name.
Height is therefore not one number but a small family of zones, each matched to a job and a viewing distance. As an illustrative guide, as of 2026 and always to verify against the current standard and the project: overhead signage wants generous clearance (commonly around 2.1 metres or more to the underside) so nobody walks into it and it clears the crowd; wall-mounted identification and directional signs tend to sit around standing eye level, roughly 1.4 to 1.6 metres to centre, where they are comfortable to read without craning; and tactile and braille information, which must be touched, sits lower, within a comfortable reach that also serves wheelchair users and children. These figures are starting points, not rules - the binding mounting heights, and especially the accessibility and tactile dimensions, come from the current codes (NBC, the accessibility and Harmonised Guidelines) and an accessibility consultant, not from this lesson.
The deeper principle is to match the viewing distance to the sign. A sign meant to be read from thirty metres away across a concourse must be large, high and unobstructed; a sign meant to be read from a metre away at a door can be small and low. Placement, size and mounting are a single decision made together: you decide how far away someone will first need to read the sign, and everything else - its height, its scale, whether it is overhead or on the wall - follows from that. A frequent real-world error in India is mounting a directional sign at a junction too low, so that the moment the corridor fills with people it vanishes behind shoulders and umbrellas; lift it into the sightline and the same sign suddenly works.
Not hidden, not drowned in clutter
A sign can be at the right decision point, in the sightline and at the right height, and still be invisible - because something is in front of it, or because it is lost in a sea of competing messages. Obstruction is the first and most embarrassing failure: the elegant directional sign hidden by a newly installed pillar, a hanging plant, an open door, a standee, a parked trolley, or a festival banner taped over it. This is why placement cannot be finalised on a drawing alone; it must be checked in the real, furnished, occupied space, from the eye height and approach path of a real user, because a building in use is never as clean as a building on a plan. Temporary obstructions - the banner, the trolley, the seasonal display - are a facilities and management problem as much as a design one, and the system should anticipate them.
Clutter is the subtler and more common killer. When a wall carries a wayfinding sign alongside a fire notice, three laminated A4 announcements, a no-smoking symbol, a sponsor's logo, a digital screen and a hand-written arrow, the single message that actually helps the lost visitor is buried. The eye cannot triage that much competing information in the second it has, so it gives up. Great placement protects the sign's field: it reserves a clear zone around wayfinding information, keeps regulatory and promotional material out of the primary sightline, and ruthlessly resists the organisational urge to staple one more notice beside the directory. Less is not an aesthetic preference here - it is a functional requirement, because legibility is a contest for a scarce moment of attention.
A particular Indian reality deserves naming: our public buildings accrete signage over time - every department, vendor, contractor and well-meaning officer adds their own notice, in their own style, wherever there is wall. The result is often a wall that technically contains the needed information and yet communicates nothing, because the official wayfinding sign is indistinguishable from the clutter around it. Part of the placement designer's job, and part of the handover to the people who will run the building, is to defend the wayfinding system's visual quiet: a consistent family of signs, given room to be seen, with a clear policy about what else may go near them. The sign that survives is the one whose place was protected.
Consistency: teaching people where to look
The final placement principle is the one that turns a set of individual signs into a system people can trust: consistency. When signs of the same kind appear reliably in the same relative position - room names always to the latch side of the door at the same height, directional signs always overhead at junctions, 'you are here' maps always at lift lobbies and entrances - people learn the pattern without being taught it, and after a few minutes in a building they stop searching and simply glance to where they now know the information will be. This learned expectation is one of the most powerful and most invisible tools in wayfinding: it lowers effort and anxiety precisely because it removes the need to hunt. Inconsistent placement destroys it - if room numbers are sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes above, the visitor must re-search every time, and the system feels untrustworthy even when every individual sign is correct.
Consistency of placement pairs with consistency of everything else the earlier modules covered - the same typeface, colours, symbols and sign family - so that a sign is recognisable as part of the system from its position and appearance together, before a word is read. It also supports the anxious visitor in a quiet way: a predictable system signals that someone has thought about them, which is reassuring in itself. Consistency does not mean rigidity; it means a clear, documented rule set (captured later in the sign schedule and placement plan, Module 10) that is applied with judgement - the standard position adjusted where a real obstruction or an architectural feature demands, but never abandoned on a whim.
For the person running the building, consistent placement is also what keeps the system working over years: when a new sign is added, the rule tells everyone exactly where it goes, so the system does not degrade into the accreted clutter described above. For the designer, the takeaway is that placement is not a series of one-off decisions but a small grammar - a set of placement conventions for each sign type - that you establish early, test in the real space, and hold to. Place each sign at the decision point, in the sightline, at the right height, in the clear, and in the same place as its siblings, and you have done the half of sign design that no typography can substitute for.

Workshop — walk the decision points
Placement is learned by walking a real journey and reading it as a sequence of decisions. In this workshop you will trace one route through a place you can visit or recall vividly, mark its decision points, and judge whether each sign is placed where it is actually needed, seen and uncluttered.

- 1Choose one clear journey (entrance to a specific destination) and walk it slowly as a first-time, anxious visitor. Mark on a rough plan every DECISION POINT - entrance, junction, lift lobby, fork, arrival - where you genuinely had to decide which way.
- 2At each decision point, note three things: was there a directional sign; was it in your SIGHTLINE as you approached (overhead, projecting, or on a wall you were already looking at); and was it at a height you could read comfortably at that distance?
- 3Hunt for failures: find one sign OBSTRUCTED by something real (pillar, plant, banner, trolley, screen) and one wall where CLUTTER buries the wayfinding message among notices, logos and ads. Photograph or sketch both.
- 4Test CONSISTENCY: do room names, directionals and 'you are here' maps appear in the same relative position each time, so you learned where to look - or did you have to re-search every time? Note one inconsistency.
- 5Write a short verdict and a fix: the route's worst placement failure, and the single change (move it into the sightline, lift it above the crowd, clear its field, make its placement consistent) that would most help a stressed first-time visitor.

Placement is where your plan and the signage meet - and the best placements are the ones the architecture makes easy. If you have given a junction a clear sightline, a generous overhead zone free of ducts and beams, and an uncluttered wall at the right spot, the wayfinding designer can place a small, effective sign there; if the junction is low, congested and busy with services, even a good sign struggles. Think about sign locations while you are still planning circulation: reserve clean zones at decision points and lift lobbies, keep primary sightlines open, and coordinate ceiling heights so overhead signage has its clearance. Leave binding mounting heights and accessibility dimensions to the codes and the accessibility consultant, but give the signs good places to live.
Placement is squarely your craft, and it is where fit-out decisions either help or sabotage the signage. You control the furniture, planting, standees, screens and loose notices that so often end up obstructing or drowning a sign - so protect the sign's field: reserve a clear zone around wayfinding information, keep it in the sightline, and resist the client's urge to staple one more notice beside the directory. Establish consistent placement conventions for each sign type (room names always to the latch side at a set height, directionals overhead at junctions) and check them in the real, furnished space from a first-time visitor's eye level. Verify mounting heights and tactile placement against the accessibility standards and the fabricator, not from memory.
Placement is the easiest wayfinding skill to practise and the one most often ignored. Start noticing it everywhere: at a junction, ask where your eyes went first, and whether the sign was there or somewhere you had to search. Spot obstructed signs (hidden by a pillar, a plant, a banner) and cluttered walls where the real message is lost among notices, and spot the opposite - a metro or airport where signs reliably float overhead exactly where you look. Train yourself to read a space as a sequence of decision points and to ask, at each, 'is the sign where the decision is made, in my sightline, at the right height, and in the clear?' You are learning to see placement as a design decision, which most people never do.
