How People Actually Navigate

Watch real people find their way and you see something messier and more human than any plan assumes - following sightlines, chasing landmarks, taking the easy path, asking a stranger and glancing at a phone - and good design meets that real behaviour, not an idealised one

The hook

People do not navigate the way your plan imagines. They follow what they can see, take the easy route, guess at junctions, ask a stranger and check their phone - and good wayfinding is designed for that real behaviour.

Stand in the concourse of a busy station or the lobby of a large hospital and just watch people arrive and try to find their way. You will not see calm, methodical route-planning. You will see someone step in, pause, scan for something that looks like where they need to go, and head toward whatever is most visible and most inviting. You will see people drift toward openings and light, round the nearest corner, hesitate at a junction, double back, squint at a distant sign, pull out a phone, or simply ask the person at the desk. Real navigation is improvised, embodied and a bit lazy - and it looks almost nothing like the tidy arrows on a plan.

This gap between how we imagine people navigate and how they actually do is where a great deal of bad wayfinding comes from. Designers put a perfect sign in a logical place and are baffled when people still miss it - because the person was looking down the open corridor toward the light, not up at the sign; or took the obvious wide route instead of the correct narrow one; or never reached the junction where the sign lived because an earlier choice sent them elsewhere. To design wayfinding that works, you have to design for the real, observed behaviour of real people under real conditions - hurried, distracted, unfamiliar, often stressed. This lesson sets out how people actually find their way - the cues they follow, the choices they make at decision points, the help they reach for - and what it means to design for that behaviour rather than an idealised one.

What people actually follow: sightlines, landmarks and the visible

The first and most important fact about real navigation is that people go toward what they can see. Vision leads; we move toward visible destinations, visible openings, light, and landmarks within sight. A clear sightline - an uninterrupted view from where you are to where you want to go, or to a strong cue pointing the way - is the single most powerful wayfinding aid there is, because it lets the person navigate without thinking: they simply head for the thing they can see. When you can see the departure gates, the atrium, the ward entrance, the light at the end of the concourse, you move with confidence and need no sign. When the destination is hidden behind walls and turns, you are thrown back on signs, memory and guesswork, and the risk of error climbs.

This is why landmarks do so much real work. People navigate by aiming at salient, visible things - "head toward the big red sculpture," "make for the glass tower" - far more readily than by following abstract directions or cardinal points. A landmark visible from a decision point effectively answers "which way?" before any sign is read. It is also why people are drawn, often unconsciously, toward light, openness and movement: a bright, open, busy route reads as "the main way" and pulls people along it, while a dark, narrow, dead-looking corridor repels them even when it is the correct route. The visible environment is constantly signalling where to go, and people follow those signals first.

The design consequences are large and mostly architectural. Protect and create sightlines to key destinations and decision points - reveal the atrium, open the view to the gates, let people see the ward entrance as they approach; a destination you can see needs no sign. Place visible landmarks where the view naturally falls and where decisions are made. Use light, openness and the pull of the main route to lead people the right way, and be wary of a correct route that looks like a reluctant back passage - people will not take it however well you sign it. And understand that a sign fighting the visible environment usually loses: if the space pulls one way and a sign points another, people follow the space. Signs work best when they confirm and name what the visible environment already suggests, not when they try to overrule it.

People go toward what they can SEE - destinations, openings, light, landmarks. A sightline beats a sign. A sign can't win a fight with the space.

Decision points, the least-effort path, and real choices

Navigation is really a series of decisions at specific points - the junctions, forks, lobbies and thresholds where a person must choose which way to go. Between decision points people move more or less automatically; at them, they stop (or slow), take stock, and choose. This is the backbone of wayfinding design: the decision point is where information is needed, and information placed anywhere else is largely wasted. A sign is useful exactly when and where a choice must be made - at the junction, before the fork, at the moment of doubt - and a decision point left without guidance is where people hesitate, guess and go wrong. Much of the craft, developed in Module 2, is identifying every decision point along a journey and making sure each one answers the person's question at that moment.

At each decision, people are strongly biased toward the least-effort path. Faced with a choice, we tend to take the route that looks easiest and most obvious - the wider corridor, the straight-ahead option, the one that continues our current direction, the one that looks more travelled or better lit - even when a less obvious route is shorter or correct. We avoid stairs when a lift or ramp is visible, avoid turns when we can go straight, and prefer routes that keep our goal in sight. People also tend to keep going in their initial direction and to use a "first reasonable option" rather than optimise - satisficing, not maximising. None of this is stupidity; it is efficient real-world behaviour under limited attention and time.

For the designer this means you must make the correct route also the easiest and most obvious one. Do not put the right way up an uninviting side stair while a grand staircase leads the wrong way; do not ask people to turn away from the open, lit, obvious route. Align the path of least effort with the path you want people to take, so that doing the easy thing is doing the right thing - and where you genuinely cannot, make the decision point unmissable and the guidance unambiguous, because you are now asking people to override a strong behavioural pull. People also read clues in the environment - the flow of other people, the look of a space, thresholds and changes of floor - as information, so design those clues to agree with the intended route rather than contradict it.

Asking, phones and the social side of finding your way

Real navigation is not a solo act performed only with signs. People use other people constantly: they follow the crowd (where everyone is heading is probably the way to the exit or the platform), they watch what others do, and - crucially - they ask. Asking a member of staff, a guard, a shopkeeper or a fellow traveller is one of the most common and effective wayfinding strategies there is, especially for people who cannot read the signs, do not share the language, or are simply lost and anxious. Good wayfinding design plans for this social layer rather than pretending it away: put staffed help and information points where people arrive confused, make staff visible and approachable, and recognise that a friendly "it's just down there on the left" often does what a wall of signs cannot. In India this is doubly true - the help desk, the guard, the fellow passenger are central to how huge, multilingual, mixed-literacy crowds actually navigate stations, hospitals and temple towns.

The other huge modern factor is the phone. Many people now navigate with a map app, a saved pin, a screenshot of directions, or by searching as they go, and outdoors turn-by-turn navigation has changed behaviour profoundly - people follow the blue dot and the voice, heads down, often ignoring the physical environment entirely. Indoors, phone navigation is patchier (GPS is weak inside, indoor positioning is improving but uneven), so inside buildings people still rely heavily on the physical environment and signs. The designer's stance, developed in Module 9, is integration, not denial: assume many people arrive having navigated to the door by phone and need the physical system to take over smoothly inside; design physical and digital to reinforce, not contradict, each other; and never build a place that only works if you have a charged phone, data and the right app - that excludes too many people and fails the moment the technology does.

Underneath all of it is a simple truth: people use whatever works, in combination. A real journey might be phone to the building, then crowd-following into the concourse, then a sightline to the atrium, then a sign at the junction, then asking a guard for the final room. Design is not a competition between space, signs, people and phones - it is making all of them agree and support each other, so that however a given person navigates, the place helps. Designing for real behaviour means designing for this whole messy, human, multi-strategy reality, not for an idealised navigator who reads every sign in order.

Designing for how people really move

Pulling the behaviour together gives a practical design stance. Lead with the visible. Because people go toward what they can see, protect and create sightlines to destinations and decision points, use landmarks and the pull of light and openness to guide, and make the correct route the one that looks obvious - the space should suggest the right way before any sign is read. Put information at the decision points, and only there. Identify every junction, fork and threshold where a choice is made, and make sure each answers the person's question at that moment, with nothing important between points and no unguided decision left to guesswork. Align the correct route with the least-effort route, so doing the easy, obvious thing is doing the right thing; where you cannot, make the decision point unmissable because you are overriding a strong pull.

Confirm continuously. Because people navigate by a loop of expect-move-check, give reassurance between decisions ("yes, still this way") so a person never travels a long stretch wondering if they went wrong - missing confirmation is what turns a minor doubt into feeling lost. Plan for asking and for phones. Put visible, approachable help where people arrive confused, and integrate the physical system with the digital one people have already been using, while never depending on a phone. And design for the hardest case, not the confident regular: the first-time, hurried, distracted, stressed, low-literacy or non-local visitor is the true test, and a place that works for them works for everyone.

The meta-skill behind all of this is observation. You cannot design for real behaviour you have not watched, so the wayfinding designer's core habit - and the subject of later testing methods in Module 10 - is to observe real people navigating real places: where they pause, hesitate, go wrong, double back, ask, squint at a sign, follow the crowd. That is the ground truth, and it regularly contradicts the plan. As always, the behavioural principles here are the stable part; the benchmark figures you meet later (letter heights, viewing distances) are illustrative starting points as of 2026 to verify against the current standard and project, and binding accessibility, fire-signage and fabrication specifics defer to the codes, the specialists and the fabricator. Design for the real, observed, messy way people actually find their way - that is what makes wayfinding work in the world rather than only on paper.

Workshop — watch people find their way

Wayfinding design rests on observed behaviour, so this workshop is pure observation. You will watch real people navigate a real place and record what they actually do - which will almost certainly differ from what a plan would predict.

A notebook, a busy public place with unfamiliar visitors, and patience. Observe discreetly and respectfully; you are watching patterns of movement, not individuals personally. No measuring or photography of people needed.

Make signs confirm what the visible environment already suggests rather than fight it (a sign pointing against the open, lit route loses). Provide continuous reassurance between decisions, design visible and approachable help and information points for where people arrive confused, and integrate with the phone navigation people have already used. Design for the low-literacy, non-local, stressed first-timer, and coordinate accessibility and contrast specifics with the standards and specialists.

Become a watcher of navigation - it is the skill that separates real wayfinding design from guesswork. Sit in a station, mall, hospital or campus and observe: where do people pause, hesitate, go the wrong way, double back, ask, squint at a sign, follow the crowd, stare at a phone? You will quickly see they follow sightlines, take the easy route, decide at junctions and ask when stuck - almost nothing like a tidy plan. Learn the vocabulary (sightline, decision point, least-effort path, satisficing) and the habit of observing real behaviour. You are not testing a live project yet; you are training the eye that will tell you whether any design meets how people really move - the ground truth all good wayfinding rests on.
