A good pictogram is understood before a word can be read and across every language at once - which is why standard symbol sets and a disciplined, consistent arrow are among the most powerful tools in wayfinding, and especially vital in multilingual, multi-script, low-literacy India
A good pictogram is understood before a word can be read - and by everyone, in every language, at once. That is a kind of power words simply do not have.
Picture a traveller landing in a country whose language and script they cannot read - or, just as real, an Indian railway passenger who reads Tamil but not Hindi, or who reads no script fluently at all. Words on a sign, however well set, are useless to them. But a small picture of a person in a wheelchair, a knife and fork, a suitcase, a figure walking toward a door - these they understand instantly, and so does almost everyone else on the concourse, whatever language they think in. That is the quiet superpower of the pictogram: it leaps over language and literacy and lands directly as meaning, often faster than a word can even be read.
This makes symbols and pictograms among the most valuable tools in the whole wayfinding kit, and nowhere more than in India, where any large public place serves speakers of many languages and several scripts, and a significant share of users read little or no text. But the power comes with discipline. A pictogram only works if it is genuinely recognisable - which is why we lean on tested, standard symbol sets rather than inventing cute icons - and a symbol system only works if it is used consistently. And then there is the arrow: the humblest, most used and most abused element in all of signage, which fails constantly not because arrows are hard but because their grammar is treated carelessly. This lesson covers all three - the power of pictograms, the standard sets and how to choose and design symbols, and how to make the arrow behave - always with the through-line in mind: the best signage speaks to the person having the hardest time, and a clear symbol often speaks to them when nothing else can.
Picture > word for speed and reach. Use standard sets. Test on strangers. And for heaven's sake, fix the arrows.
Why pictograms - language-independent and fast
A pictogram is a simple, stylised picture that stands for a thing or an idea - a figure for toilets, a cross for first aid, an aeroplane for the airport, a running figure and a door for the way out. Its two great advantages over words are worth stating plainly, because they drive a lot of wayfinding decisions. First, it is language-independent: one pictogram communicates to speakers of every language and to people who cannot read at all, where a word serves only those who read that particular language and script. Second, it is often faster than reading: a recognised symbol is grasped as a whole image almost instantly, while a word must be scanned letter by letter - which matters enormously for a moving, glancing, stressed reader who has a second or two.
These advantages are not academic in India, they are decisive. A single Indian airport, railway station, hospital or metro serves people who between them read English, Hindi in Devanagari, and any of a dozen major regional scripts - and a meaningful proportion who read no script confidently. Printing every word in three or four languages is necessary but bulky, slow to scan and still leaves people out. A good pictogram reaches all of them at once, which is why pictograms are not a nice addition to Indian signage but a structural necessity - the element that makes a genuinely inclusive, multilingual system possible. The same logic applies anywhere with international or diverse users: transport hubs, hospitals, tourist places, the Olympics that drove so much symbol design.
But the power has a hard limit: a pictogram only works if it is actually understood, and comprehension is not automatic. Some things picture easily and near-universally (toilets, food, phone, a direction); many ideas do not (abstract concepts, specific departments, 'customer service', 'this way for onward connections'), and a symbol that is not genuinely recognised is worse than useless because it looks like it means something while conveying nothing, or the wrong thing. Culture matters too: a gesture or object that reads one way in one place reads differently in another. So pictograms are paired with words as often as used alone, tested for real comprehension, and - the subject of the next section - drawn from proven, standard sets rather than invented, precisely because recognition is everything.
A picture crosses every language at once and reads faster than a word. In multi-script India that's not a bonus - it's essential.
Standard symbol sets: ISO 7001, AIGA - use them, do not reinvent
Because a pictogram lives or dies by recognition, the single most important rule is: use recognised, standard symbols wherever they exist, rather than designing your own. Over decades, a shared visual language of public symbols has been developed, tested and adopted worldwide, and a traveller has learned to read it without realising. Reaching for that shared set buys you instant recognisability that no freshly invented icon can match - and consistency with every other place the user has ever navigated.
Two reference sets anchor this. ISO 7001 is the international standard for public information symbols - graphical symbols for things like toilets, information, first aid, baggage, telephones and many more - developed and tested for comprehension and adopted internationally; it is the first place to look for a needed symbol. The AIGA symbol signs are a set of 50-odd symbols created by the American Institute of Graphic Arts with the US Department of Transportation in the 1970s, originally for transport hubs; they are clear, public-domain, hugely influential and widely used, and much of the modern vocabulary descends from them. Many countries and standards also maintain their own public-symbol sets that align with these. For safety symbols specifically (fire, hazard, mandatory and prohibition signs, the green running-man exit symbol), there are separate safety-sign standards, and those are binding - defer to them and the fire authority rather than designing your own.
The practical workflow follows from this. When you need a symbol, look for a standard one first; adopt it faithfully, keeping its recognisable form rather than restyling it into illegibility for the sake of the brand. Where your symbol set and a standard one overlap, match the standard. Only design an original symbol when no standard exists for that specific meaning - and then design it to sit consistently within the same visual system (same weight, same level of detail, same style) as the standard symbols around it, and test it hard for comprehension before you commit. Restyling standard symbols for brand reasons is a common and damaging temptation: a heavily stylised, clever toilet icon may win a design award and still leave a desperate stranger unsure, which is a total failure of the symbol's only job. Recognition beats originality every time; the brand can live in the environmental graphics, not in confusing the working symbols.
Choosing and designing symbols that work
Whether you are adopting standard symbols or designing the occasional new one, a few principles keep a symbol set working. Consistency of style is first: every symbol in the system should look like it belongs to the same family - the same visual weight, the same level of simplification, the same treatment of the human figure, the same stroke logic. A set that mixes a thin-line icon here, a solid silhouette there and a detailed illustration elsewhere looks chaotic and reads slower, because the eye cannot settle into one visual grammar. Pick a style and hold it across the whole set, standard and custom symbols alike.
Simplicity and boldness come next, for the same reason type needs a tall x-height and open counters: a symbol is read small, far and fast, so it must be a strong, simple silhouette that survives distance, blur and poor light. Fine detail, thin lines and fussy internal features vanish exactly when needed. The best pictograms are almost crude up close and crystal clear across a hall. Design (or judge) them the way you judge signage type - shrink them, blur them, and see if the meaning holds. Clear figure-ground and adequate size relative to the type complete the legibility picture.
Comprehension, tested on real people, is the decider, because the designer is the worst judge of whether their own symbol is understood - you know what it means, so it always looks obvious to you. A genuinely good symbol has been shown to people who do not already know, ideally across the range of cultures and literacy levels who will use the place, and understood without a caption. This is precisely why standard sets are so valuable: they have already survived that testing. For anything custom, do a quick comprehension test before committing, and be ruthless - if people do not get it, the symbol has failed, however elegant. Finally, pair symbol and word where it helps: for many wayfinding messages the symbol and the text label together are stronger than either alone - the symbol for the fast, language-independent, across-the-hall read, the word to confirm and to carry meanings that do not picture. The redundancy is a feature, serving both the reader who cannot read the script and the reader who wants certainty, which is the inclusive habit this whole course keeps returning to.
One consistent style. Bold, simple silhouettes that survive a squint. Test comprehension on strangers. Symbol + word = strongest.
The humble arrow: consistency, placement, meaning
No element is more used in wayfinding than the arrow, and few are more often got wrong - not because arrows are difficult, but because their grammar is treated casually. An arrow has to answer one question unambiguously: which way do I go? And it fails whenever the system lets it be read two ways. The fixes are simple but must be applied with iron consistency across the whole place, because the moment a building uses arrows two different ways, it has taught its users to distrust every arrow.
The first issue is meaning, especially the up arrow. A left or right arrow is unambiguous; the vertical arrow is the troublemaker. Does an up arrow mean 'go straight ahead / forward' or 'go up' (a floor above, up the stairs)? In most pedestrian directional signage the convention is that an up arrow means straight ahead - you are telling a walker to continue forward, which in their view of the world is 'up' the sign - while 'up a level' is usually shown differently (an explicit stair or lift symbol, or a dedicated treatment). The down arrow similarly tends to mean 'down to this level / down here' or, on an overhead sign, 'the thing is below this point'. Whatever conventions you choose, choose them explicitly, document them, and never contradict them - the single worst arrow failure is a system where up sometimes means ahead and sometimes means upstairs.
The second issue is placement relative to the text. An arrow and the destination it points to are one unit and must be unmistakably paired - the reader must never have to guess which label an arrow belongs to on a crowded sign. A robust, widely used convention is to put the arrow on the side of the sign corresponding to the turn: left-pointing arrows and their text grouped on the left, right on the right, so the layout itself reinforces the direction. Keep each arrow tight to its label, and do not let one arrow appear to serve two messages. The third issue is consistency of the arrow itself - one arrow style, weight and size throughout, sized to match the type so it reads at the same distance. Arrows also belong only where a decision is made or confirmed: an arrow at every junction the route turns, and crucially a confirming continuation where a nervous walker needs reassurance ('yes, still this way'), but not a clutter of arrows where none is needed. Get the arrow's grammar right - consistent meaning, paired placement, one style, used at decisions - and you have fixed the most common, most frustrating wayfinding failure there is.

- 1Collect the set: photograph a range of pictograms and directional signs from one real place, trying to capture the same symbol in different spots and several arrows.
- 2Test recognition: for each pictogram, decide whether it is a recognised standard symbol or a custom/stylised one, and (honestly, or by asking someone who does not know the place) whether its meaning is clear without the word. Flag any that are ambiguous or over-stylised.
- 3Check consistency: does the whole set share one visual style (weight, simplification, figure style)? Is the same meaning always shown by the same symbol? Note any drift or duplicates.
- 4Interrogate the arrows: for each arrow, ask what 'up' means here (ahead or upstairs?), whether it is clearly paired with its label, whether the placement matches the turn side, whether the style/size is consistent, and whether it sits at a real decision point. Find the worst arrow failure.
- 5Propose the fixes: write up the two or three highest-impact changes - a symbol to replace with a standard one, a comprehension risk, the arrow-grammar rule the place is breaking - framed around the stressed, non-local-language visitor who depends on them most.

Symbols and arrows are the signage designer's craft, but you set the context that makes them necessary and effective. In a multilingual country, a legible building with a clear structure reduces how much the signs - and their symbols and arrows - have to rescue; good sightlines let a directional arrow be confirmed by actually seeing the destination. When you brief and review the wayfinding system, insist on recognised standard symbols (ISO 7001, AIGA lineage) over invented brand icons for the working signs, and on one consistent, documented arrow grammar across the whole project. Defer safety-symbol standards (fire, hazard, exit) to the fire authority and specialists - those are binding, not a design choice.
This is core environmental-graphics craft and a place you can add real inclusive value. Build the symbol set from recognised standards first, design original symbols only where none exists, and hold one consistent visual style across the whole set - resisting the urge to over-stylise standard symbols into illegibility for the brand. Pair symbol and word where it strengthens the message, and test custom symbols for comprehension on real people. Above all, fix the arrow grammar once - what up means, arrow-on-the-turn-side placement, one style sized to the type, arrows only at decisions and reassurance points - and document it in the sign standards so it never drifts. Defer binding safety symbols to the standards.
Symbols and arrows are a fast, rewarding thing to study because the good and bad examples are everywhere. Learn that recognition is everything - which is why designers lean on standard sets (ISO 7001, the AIGA symbols) rather than inventing icons - and that the best pictograms are bold, simple silhouettes tested on people who do not already know the meaning. Then become an arrow critic: on your next metro or airport trip, ask of every arrow whether up means ahead or upstairs, whether it is clearly paired with its label, whether the style is consistent, and whether it appears where a decision is actually made. You will quickly spot how often the humble arrow is the thing that fails. You are not expected to know every safety-symbol standard; you are expected to understand why symbols cross language and why arrow grammar must be consistent.
