The sign hierarchy: from the street to the bay
Wayfinding works because signs answer questions in the order a driver asks them. Approach and entry signs answer "can I go in, and will I fit?" long before the barrier. Directional signs answer "which way now?" at every decision point. Identity signs answer "where am I, and how will I find my car again?" once inside. Safety signs answer "how do I get out?" at all times. Design the hierarchy top-down and the reader is never handed two questions at once.

Approach and entry signs
At the mouth of the car park the driver needs to make three decisions without slowing traffic behind them. Give each its own clear sign:
- IN and OUT. Separate, unambiguous entry and exit signs so no one drives up the wrong ramp. Where one opening serves both, the one-way discipline from the layout and aisle design guide must be spelled out on the ground and overhead.

Directional and circulation signs
Inside, the driver is moving and cannot read paragraphs. Directional signs are arrows plus one or two words, placed at the decision point, not after it. The golden rules:
- One arrow per decision. Do not stack four destinations on a pole at a junction where the driver has half a second to read.
- Confirm the one-way loop. Every arrow must agree with the physical circulation; a sign that contradicts the paint or the ramp direction is worse than no sign.
- Repeat, do not assume. Re-state the direction to the exit at every level and every major junction — a first-time visitor has no mental map.

Bay numbering that actually helps
- Number with the flow of circulation, not randomly, so the sequence is predictable.
- Prefix the bay with its zone or level (G-214, not just 214) so the number is self-locating.
- Reserve a clear, consistent marking scheme for the special bays — accessible, EV, visitor, two-wheeler — so they read differently at a glance.
- Keep the stencil at the head of the bay and on the pillar, in a colour that survives tyre scuffing and low light.
Floor markings and line-painting as wayfinding
Half of good wayfinding is on the ground, not overhead. Floor markings are read faster than signs because the driver is already looking at the road, and they survive when a hanging sign is blocked by a tall vehicle.

This is the tier where the stakes change. Everything above is convenience; this is life-safety, and it is consultant-led. Plan for it, insist on it, but let your fire consultant and the fire officer specify and certify it.
Fire and egress signage — fire-officer-led

Keep-clear and emergency-access signage
- NO PARKING / KEEP CLEAR on the fire-tender path, the ramp toe, the turning head and in front of every exit and hydrant — reinforced by floor hatching so it reads even when a sign is blocked.
- Ambulance / emergency route kept legible in hospitals and large complexes, tying into hospital and institutional parking where minutes matter.
Speed, pedestrians and the vulnerable
- Speed limit signs (a low car-park crawl) at entry and repeated on long runs, backed by the physical calming above.

Lighting for legibility
A sign is only as good as the light on it. Even, glare-free lighting — brightest at the ramp transitions where eyes adjust from daylight to gloom — is what makes signs, floor arrows and bay numbers readable, and it is a security measure too. At scale, dynamic guidance turns "circle until you find a gap" into "follow the count":
