Flexible Impact Doors in India 2026: Traffic Door Guide

How tough double-swing PVC and ABS traffic doors take forklift and trolley hits, self-close and keep cold rooms and wet areas sealed.

In a busy warehouse, cold store or food plant, every opening that a forklift, trolley or pallet jack passes through dozens of times an hour is a problem waiting to happen. A rigid door slows the operator, a roll-up door is too slow for that cadence, and an open gap bleeds conditioned air and lets pests in. Flexible impact doors — also called traffic doors or impact traffic doors — solve exactly this: a tough flexible PVC or ABS double-swing leaf that the load simply pushes straight through, that springs shut behind it, and that flexes or pops back when struck instead of breaking. This guide is a specifier-grade walk through grades, construction, where they fit, where they do not, and realistic India 2026 costs.

These doors are deliberately humble. They carry no fire or security rating and are not a thermal barrier on their own. Their job is throughput, hygiene separation and air management at a single high-traffic gap — and at that job they are unmatched on cost per cycle. They are project-engineered to the opening, so treat the figures here as planning bands and get a vendor spec against your actual traffic, temperature and width.

What flexible impact doors are — and what they are not

A flexible impact door is a self-closing, double-acting leaf (or pair of leaves) that swings open in either direction when pushed, then returns to centre under spring or gravity action. The leaf is made from a resilient material — flexible PVC, semi-rigid PVC, or impact-grade ABS/polyethylene panels — mounted on double-acting spring hinges or a gravity cam so it can be driven through hands-free. A clear vision panel near eye and forklift-mast height lets traffic see oncoming movement before the door swings.

The defining word is impactable. When a trolley corner or forklift fork catches the edge, a flexible leaf absorbs and rebounds rather than shattering, and a panel door is designed so a damaged section can be swapped without replacing the whole leaf. That tolerance for routine abuse is the whole point.

It is worth drawing a clean line with the sibling product. A double-action swing door of the rigid type — timber, laminate or steel on a double-acting floor spring — gives an architectural, hospital-grade finish and a firmer seal, but it dents and is costlier to repair after a forklift strike. Flexible impact doors trade that finish for resilience and lower cost per opening. Choose the rigid double-acting door where appearance and a clean perimeter matter; choose flexible impact doors where loads will hit the door and uptime rules.

Grades and materials

There is no single Indian standard for impact traffic doors the way fire door ratings are fixed by IS 3614; specification is by material grade, leaf construction and operating temperature. As a rule of thumb, the market sorts into three tiers.

Material choice follows the environment. Standard flexible PVC stiffens and can crack below roughly 0°C, so chiller and freezer openings need a cold-grade / low-temperature PVC formulation that stays pliable down to about -25°C, often with a gasketed perimeter and, for deep-freeze, a low-wattage frame heater against frost build-up. Vision panels and safety

A vision panel is not optional in any powered-traffic area. Position it so both a walking person and a seated forklift driver can see through before the door swings into them. Acrylic or polycarbonate glazing is standard; polycarbonate resists cracking under impact. Where two-way forklift traffic crosses, pair the door with floor markings or a convex mirror at the approach.

How the swing and self-closing works

The mechanism is what separates a good traffic door from a nuisance. Two systems dominate.

  • Double-acting spring hinges: sprung cartridges at top and bottom of the pivot edge store energy as the leaf swings either way and return it to centre. Spring tension is adjustable to balance easy push-through against a firm reseal — too soft and the door drifts open and leaks air; too stiff and it slams or bruises a slow trolley.
  • Gravity cam (self-aligning) hinge: the leaf rides on an inclined cam so its own weight pulls it back to the closed, centred position. Common on lighter flexible leaves; quiet and low-maintenance, with a gentler close.

For cold rooms and air-managed gaps, the reseal speed and centring accuracy matter as much as the open ease, because every second the door hangs ajar is conditioned air lost.

Where they fit — and where they do not

Flexible impact doors earn their place at internal, high-cycle gaps. Typical homes for them include warehouse cross-aisles and dispatch openings (see warehouse doors), the ante-room or dock side of a cold-storage door, factory production-to-packing thresholds, food and beverage processing lines, hospital service corridors, and wet wash-down zones in kitchens and dairies.

They are frequently combined rather than used alone. A common cold-chain arrangement is an insulated sliding or insulated industrial door as the primary thermal barrier, with a flexible impact door inboard for constant trolley traffic, and PVC strip curtains as a third, cheapest layer for the highest-frequency gaps. Where opening speed at a large external gap is the priority, a high-speed door is the right tool, not an impact door. And for a true thermal or pest barrier at the building envelope, an air curtain often pairs with the door.

Where impact doors do not belong: any opening needing a fire, smoke, security or acoustic rating; the primary external envelope of a conditioned space (they leak too much around the flexible perimeter); and clean architectural lobbies where a rigid double-acting leaf reads better. They are a workhorse, not a finish item.

Specification and maintenance checklist

When you write the spec, fix these points: clear opening width and height; single vs double leaf; leaf material and temperature grade; hinge type and adjustable spring tension; vision panel size, position and glazing; perimeter gasket for air-managed gaps; food-grade / washdown rating where relevant; and whether lower panels are field-replaceable. For upkeep, schedule a quarterly check of hinge tension and centring, gasket condition, vision-panel clarity, and any frost heater on cold-grade units — fold it into your wider industrial door AMC scheduler. Frequently asked questions

Do flexible impact doors have a fire or thermal rating?

No. They carry no fire, smoke or security rating and are not a standalone thermal barrier. Where a rating is required, use a rated assembly — see fire-rated doors — and reserve the impact door for throughput and hygiene separation at the traffic gap.

Can a forklift really drive straight through them?

Yes — that is the design intent. The leaf swings open under the push of the load and the flexible or panel construction rebounds from edge contact. For two-way forklift traffic, add vision panels, floor markings and an approach mirror so operators see oncoming movement.

How are they different from rigid double-action swing doors?

Both are double-acting and self-closing, but a rigid double-action swing door gives an architectural finish and firmer seal while denting under impact; a flexible impact door trades finish for resilience, lower cost per cycle and easy panel repair. Pick by whether loads will hit the door.

Will standard PVC work in a freezer room?

How long do they last?

What standard governs them in India?
