Sun-Path & Shadow Studio
Pick a city and a date to see the sun's path, its altitude and azimuth through the day, the shadow a building casts, and the overhang that shades a window in summer while letting the winter sun in. Everything runs live in your browser.
A 0.14 m projection shades the whole window at summer solar noon (sun 85° high), while the lower 38° winter sun still reaches in. Today at noon the sun climbs to 85°.
How to read it
Looking straight down at the sky dome. The centre is overhead (90°), the rim is the horizon (0°); N/E/S/W run around the edge. The bold arc is the sun's track on your chosen day; the dashed arcs are the summer solstice, equinox and winter solstice for comparison.
A top-down view of a building footprint and the shadow it throws at the selected time. Raise the building height or move the time slider and watch the shadow stretch and swing — useful for setbacks, north-light and neighbour overshadowing.
For a south façade, the projection that fully shades a window at summer solar noon while still letting the lower winter sun reach in — the first move in passive, climate-responsive design.
Times are shown in solar time (solar noon = the sun due south), the convention used for shading design. Your clock time differs by a few minutes to about an hour depending on where you sit within the IST meridian.
