Door Hinge Size Calculator

Door Hinge Size Calculator

Enter your door's height, width, thickness and material — and get the right number of hinges, hinge size (75/100/125 mm), type (butt vs ball-bearing) and finish (SS 304/316 vs MS), with an indicative ₹. Guidance for Indian homes 2026 — a carpenter may be needed for fitting.

Your door

Hollow/semi-solid core; light internal door. Bedroom / bathroom / utility; light duty. Low humidity; plated MS is fine indoors. Estimated leaf weight ≈ 24 kg (21 sq ft × 35 mm). Weight is estimated from size, thickness and material — indicative only; weigh the leaf for a precise figure.

Your recommended 3-hinge set is highlighted — more hinges = less load each.

How hinge count steps up with door height

At your door's material, thickness and use. The rule of thumb: 2 hinges to ~2.0 m, 3 for taller or heavy, 4 for tall/very heavy or fire-rated leaves. Your height is highlighted.

Get the whole door hardware spec right

DesignAI matches hinges, locks, handles and closers to your door's weight, use and climate — and flags when a heavier leaf needs ball-bearing or marine-grade fixings.

Notes & assumptions

  • How many hinges: up to ~2.0 m / light leaf = 2 hinges; ~2.0–2.4 m or heavy = 3; tall / very heavy / fire-rated = 4. We floor the count at the minimum your usage needs.
  • Hinge size (75/100/125 mm): sized to the leaf thickness and weight — thin light internal doors take 75 mm; standard 30–40 mm leaves take 100 mm; thick/heavy main doors take 125 mm.
  • Type: heavy or high-traffic doors (main / fire / ≥35 kg) use ball-bearing butt hinges to carry the load smoothly; light internal doors are fine on plain butt hinges.
  • Finish: dry/inland = plated MS; humid/monsoon = SS 304; coastal salt air = SS 316 (marine grade). Stainless resists rust where MS would seize.
  • Weight is estimated from size × thickness × material — weigh the actual leaf for a precise figure. Costs are indicative, part-only and include 18% GST; fitting labour is extra and a carpenter may be needed.
  • For fire-rated, glass or automatic/electric doors follow the door's certification and the manufacturer's hardware schedule — isolate power before working on powered doors. This tool is design guidance, not a substitute for a carpenter or fabricator.
