Wood, Cane & Bamboo Workshop

The hands-on workshop, where a drawing becomes a thing you can sit on — and where the folklore of the timber yard gets tested against the fact. It is taught from the interior designer's chair, not the carpenter's: the job is to specify the right material and grade, detail for how that material actually behaves, and coordinate the joinery and hardware, because almost every failure in fitted furniture comes down to three ignored truths — wood moves, the wrong grade was specified, or the cane and bamboo went in untreated. It opens with wood itself: that 'hardwood' and 'softwood' are a botanical label and not a hardness (balsa, the softest commercial wood, is a hardwood); the Indian timbers you will actually specify and the honest sustainability and legality behind each — plantation teak versus old-growth, rubberwood as a genuine byproduct, sheesham under CITES; the single most consequential fact about wood, that it never stops moving with the humidity around it, and that this movement — not bad glue — is what breaks joints; and the engineered boards, where the real skill is grade, because MR plywood is not waterproof, BWR is not BWP, and only IS 710 marine ply is genuinely boil-proof. It covers finishes and laminates, and the formaldehyde that UF-bonded boards quietly release into a tight, air-conditioned interior. It moves to making at full size, because a chair that looks right at 1:5 is unsittable at 1:1. It turns to the alternative materials, cane and bamboo, and clears up the confusion that starts everything: cane is a solid palm and bamboo is a hollow grass, they are botanically unrelated, and India's 2017 law even struck bamboo from the legal definition of a tree. It teaches bamboo honestly — not 'as strong as steel' in absolute terms, but astonishing for its weight, and worthless untreated because a beetle will eat it — and the joinery a hollow, splitting culm actually allows. It studies storage and the modular system built on a 32-millimetre grid, the hardware families an Indian designer specifies, and a tested ranking of wood joints that puts the humble biscuit last and shows why a dovetail's real strength is not a crush number at all. And it closes in the live workshop, where the value is simple: a designer who has cut a joint and felt a board move draws details that can be built. Throughout, it is honest about its sources — it names the myth, shows the code, and says plainly where a number is a relative guide rather than a universal constant.

Unit 1Wood — Natural, Engineered & the Way It Moves

Live

Wood itself, told straight. First the label everyone gets wrong: hardwood and softwood are a BOTANICAL classification — hardwoods are broadleaf angiosperms, softwoods are needle-bearing gymnosperms (conifers) — and it has nothing to do with hardness, which is why balsa, the softest commercial wood, is a hardwood, and yew and yellow pine are softwoods harder than many hardwoods. Then the Indian timbers a designer actually specifies, each with its honest sustainability and legality: teak (naturally durable, largely plantation-grown in India, the flag is old-growth Burmese not Indian stock, and it is NOT CITES-listed); rubberwood (the genuine byproduct — a plantation tree felled when its latex yield ends); sheesham/Indian rosewood (durable, but the whole Dalbergia genus is on CITES Appendix II since 2017 and was NOT delisted at CoP19); sal (structural), mango (byproduct), deodar (a premium softwood), babool (very hard). The single most consequential fact about wood: it is hygroscopic and anisotropic, it exchanges moisture with the air to an equilibrium moisture content set by humidity, it moves most tangentially and about half that radially and almost none along the grain, and it never stops — 'seasoned wood won't move' is false, seasoning only lowers and stabilises the moisture content, and this movement, not bad glue, is the number-one reason solid-wood joints and panels fail, so detailing must ALLOW it (floating panels, breadboard ends, slotted screw holes). Then the engineered boards — plywood cross-banded for stability (often MORE stable than solid wood for a broad panel, so 'solid is always superior' is a myth), MDF for paint and routing, HDF, particleboard, blockboard, WPC — and the real skill, GRADE: MR is moisture resistant not waterproof (IS 303, urea-formaldehyde, interior only); BWR is boiling-water resistant (IS 303, phenolic); BWP is boiling-water proof marine ply (IS 710) — BWR is not BWP. The formaldehyde that UF boards off-gas (IARC Group 1; E1/E0/CARB classes; a real indoor-air decision in tight Indian interiors). And finishes — shellac, melamine, PU, lacquer, oil and wax, each honest about what it protects against — and laminates (HPL, IS 2046), post-forming, lapping and edge-banding.

Unit 2Scales — Making at Full Size

Live

Why furniture is prototyped at one-to-one. A chair that reads fine as a 1:5 model is unsittable at full size, because ergonomics, proportion, sightlines, joint clearances and the way the material behaves cannot be judged from a scaled model — only from the real thing at real size. The discipline of the workshop: setting out full size on a story-stick or rod, working to real tolerances, and verifying that a detail drawn at scale actually assembles in the flesh. The value for a designer is precise: closing the gap between the object as drawn and the object as built. Making elements of various scales — interior elements, furniture forms, products, art and artefacts — in wood, and learning that the drawing is a proposal the full-size mock-up either confirms or refutes.

Unit 3Cane & Bamboo — the Alternative Materials

Live

The alternative materials, and the confusion that has to be cleared before anything else: cane is NOT bamboo. Cane is rattan — the SOLID stem of a climbing palm (family Arecaceae) — while bamboo is a HOLLOW woody GRASS (family Poaceae); they are botanically unrelated, a palm and a grass. Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and India made that legal fact concrete in the Indian Forest (Amendment) Act 2017, which struck the word 'bamboos' from the definition of 'tree' so that bamboo grown on non-forest land needs no felling or transit permit — though note the amendment removed only bamboo, and cane legally remains a 'tree'. Bamboo's strength, told honestly: its tensile strength along the grain is impressive (roughly 140–200 MPa) but that is BELOW mild steel in absolute terms — the 'as strong as steel' line is only true per unit WEIGHT, where bamboo, ten times lighter than steel, genuinely competes; and it is strongly anisotropic, splitting radially and weak in shear, which is exactly why you cannot joint it like solid timber. Treatment is non-negotiable: untreated bamboo and cane are eaten by powder-post beetles (Dinoderus) and fungi because of their starch, so boron (borax-boric) treatment comes first, always, and the Indian standards behind it — IS 6874 (methods of test for bamboo), IS 9096 (preservation of bamboo), IS 15912 (structural design using bamboo). The joinery a hollow, splitting culm allows — lashing, pinned and pegged joints, fishmouth and scarf cuts, filling the nodes and plugging the ends so a fastener bears on solid material, and placing joints at the strong nodes — and the woven surfaces that are cane's signature interior use: cane webbing set with a spline, and hand rattan weaving for seats and backs. Finishes for cane and bamboo, and why both are best kept sheltered.

Unit 4Storage & Modular Furniture

Live

Storage systems and the modular logic that builds most of them. The typology — base, wall and tall cabinets, wardrobes, bookcases, showcases — and the two construction logics: carcass (box) construction, the basis of all modular work, versus frame-and-panel, the traditional solid-wood answer whose floating panel accommodates the wood movement of Unit I. The 32 mm system that makes modular interchangeable: construction holes on a 32-millimetre vertical grid, 5 mm diameter, the front row set back 37 mm, so European concealed hinges, shelf pins and drawer runners all fit the same grid — and, honestly, it is not a Blum invention but the European frameless standard that Blum, Hettich and Häfele productised. Carcass materials (pre-laminated particleboard or MDF in the dry, BWR/BWP ply in the wet) and edge-banding to seal the raw edges. The hardware families an Indian designer specifies and what each is FOR — concealed European hinges, ball-bearing side runners, undermount soft-close drawer systems, and cam-lock/Minifix knock-down fittings — across the brands actually present in India (Hettich, Häfele, Blum, Ebco), with no prices, because those are unverifiable and volatile. And the joints, ranked by a published destructive test: the strong frame joints (half-lap, mortise-and-tenon, loose tenon) at the top, the biscuit at the bottom where it belongs as an ALIGNMENT joint, and the dovetail and the knock-down cam-lock shown for what they really are — a tension-resisting interlock and a re-openable fitting, jobs a single crush number cannot describe. Cost criteria and Indian furniture typology by region and income, kept honest and general rather than stereotyped.

Unit 5Live Exposure — the Workshop

Live

The live workshop, where the drawing meets the machine. Tool safety as the first law — guards on the saw and planer, push-sticks, eye and ear protection, and a working respect for what a spinning blade does — and the two health hazards a designer should carry from this course into practice: wood dust (a recognised carcinogen for the nose, especially hardwood dust) and the fine dust plus formaldehyde released when MDF and particleboard are cut, which is why dust extraction and a proper mask are not optional and why the board grade you specified in Unit I follows you into the workshop. And the real value of the hands-on unit, stated plainly: a designer who has actually cut a mortise, felt a board move under the plane, and watched an untreated cane split is a designer who draws details that can be built. The workshop closes the loop between the object drawn and the object made — which is the whole point of a making course inside a design degree.

Why did the cabinet swell in one monsoon?

Because it was built in MR plywood, which is moisture-resistant, not waterproof — and a sink needs BWR or marine ply. Almost every failure in fitted furniture comes down to three ignored facts: wood moves, the wrong grade was specified, or the cane and bamboo went in untreated. This workshop teaches you to specify, detail and coordinate so the piece you draw is the piece that lasts.
