
Wood — Natural, Engineered & the Way It Moves
Hardwood is a botany, not a hardness — and wood never stops moving
Wood is the first material a furniture maker meets, and the one most wrapped in confident folklore. This unit tells it straight: the word hardwood is a botanical label and not a hardness; the timbers an Indian designer specifies each carry an honest sustainability and legality; wood never stops moving with the humidity around it, and that movement — not bad glue — is what breaks joints; and the engineered boards are a matter of grade, because MR plywood is not waterproof and only IS 710 marine ply truly is.

Wood, told straight
Hardwood is a family, not a hardness; the Indian species come with real legality; and the one fact that governs everything downstream is that wood moves with humidity for its whole life.[1, 2, 4]
Hardwood is a botany, not a hardness
This is the first thing to unlearn. Hardwood and softwood are a botanical classification and have nothing to do with how hard the wood is. Hardwoods are angiosperms — broadleaf, flowering trees. Softwoods are gymnosperms — the needle-bearing conifers. That is the whole definition. The proof is balsa: the softest, lightest commercial wood in the world, with a Janka hardness of just 67 pound-force, is a hardwood, because botanically it is a broadleaf tree. Meanwhile yew and longleaf yellow pine are softwoods harder than cherry or mahogany. So when a supplier says 'hardwood', they have told you the tree's family, not whether it will dent — for that, ask for the Janka number.[1]
The engineered boards, and the grade
Cross-banded plywood is often more stable than solid wood — and the real skill is grade: MR is moisture resistant, BWR is boil-resistant, and only BWP marine ply (IS 710) is boil-proof.[6, 7, 8]
Cross-banding beats solid wood for a broad panel
Plywood is thin veneers glued with the grain of each layer crossed at ninety degrees to its neighbours. That cross-banding restrains movement in both directions, which is why 'solid wood is always superior to engineered' is a myth: for a broad panel — a cabinet side, a wide shutter, a large top — good plywood is often MORE dimensionally stable than solid wood, precisely because it cancels the cross-grain movement that plagues wide solid boards. Solid wood still wins on repairability, longevity and edge detailing; ply wins on stability, flatness and large-format economy. Choose per application, not by prestige.[6]
Specify the board
Pick the duty — a dry wardrobe, a kitchen carcass, a wet vanity — and watch the boards that suit it. The moisture badge is the honest one: only the boil-proof and water-immune boards carry the green, and MR sits firmly in the interior-only column.

Use: Doors, fine furniture, wet-capable joinery
Natural oils resist decay and termites; the one solid timber genuinely at home near water. Legitimate Indian teak is largely plantation-grown — the legality flag is old-growth Burmese teak, not Indian plantation stock.

Use: Painted and economy solid furniture
The honest sustainability story: a plantation byproduct, felled when latex yield ends and replanted anyway. Kiln-dry + borer/anti-fungal treatment is essential; finger-jointed panels use adhesive.
MR plywood
Engineered — plywood
IS 303
Use: Dry interior carcasses and general joinery
MR = Moisture Resistant, bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. It resists humidity, NOT water — an interior grade only. The single commonest misspecification is calling it 'waterproof'.
BWR plywood
Engineered — plywood
IS 303
Use: Kitchen carcasses, humid areas
BWR = Boiling Water Resistant, phenol-formaldehyde resin, passes an ~8-hour boil test. For humid zones and kitchens (away from standing water). BWR is boil-resistant; it is NOT the boil-proof marine grade.
Marine ply (BWP)
Engineered — plywood
IS 710
Use: Wet areas, exteriors, boats
BWP = Boiling Water Proof — the real 'waterproof' grade, phenol-formaldehyde, a 72-hour boil test. This, not BWR, is what a genuinely wet exposure needs.
MDF
Engineered — fibreboard
IS 12406
Use: Painted/lacquered shutters, routed profiles
Fine wood fibres pressed with resin — smooth homogeneous faces and edges, ideal for paint/lacquer and CNC-routed profiles. Poor edge screw-holding; swells badly with water. UF-bonded, so off-gasses formaldehyde.
HDF
Engineered — fibreboard
IS 12406 family
Use: Laminate-floor cores, thin panels
A denser fibreboard — stronger and harder than MDF. The core of laminate flooring and thin strong panels.
Particleboard
Engineered — particle
IS 3087
Use: Pre-laminated budget modular carcass (dry)
Wood chips + resin — the cheapest board and the weakest in moisture and screw-holding. The standard substrate for budget PRE-LAMINATED modular panels, kept strictly to dry zones.
Blockboard
Engineered — battened core
IS 1659
Use: Long shutters, shelves, light panels
Softwood battens edge-glued into a core, faced with ply/veneer. Lighter than solid ply for the same panel — good for long shutters and shelves where weight matters.
WPC board
Composite (wood-polymer)

Use: Wet-area cabinetry, louvers, bathroom vanities
Wood flour + PVC/polymer — genuinely water-immune, so it does the wet-area job without the cost of marine ply. Moderate screw-holding; not for heavy structural loads.
Cost bands are relative (₹ economy → ₹₹₹₹ premium), not prices. The recurring lesson: MR is moisture RESISTANT (interior), BWR is boil-RESISTANT, and only IS 710 marine ply (BWP) is genuinely boil-PROOF.

Key terms
A BOTANICAL split — angiosperm (broadleaf) vs gymnosperm (conifer) — not a hardness. Balsa is a soft hardwood; yew is a hard softwood.
The measured force to embed a steel ball halfway into the wood. The real hardness number — ask for it, don't infer it from 'hardwood'.
The moisture level wood settles to for a given humidity and temperature. It drives all dimensional movement below the fibre saturation point (~30%).
Wood moves differently by direction — most tangentially, ~half that radially, almost none along the grain. Why panels cup and joints rack.
Drying timber (air or kiln) to a stable service moisture content (~10–12% for Indian interiors, IS 1141). It lowers movement; it does not stop it.
Plywood grades: Moisture Resistant (interior, IS 303), Boiling Water Resistant (humid, IS 303), Boiling Water Proof (marine, truly wet, IS 710). MR is not waterproof; BWR is not BWP.
The interior-grade adhesive in MR ply, MDF and particleboard. It off-gasses formaldehyde (IARC Group 1); phenolic (PF) resins in BWR/BWP emit far less.
Decorative paper + kraft fused under pressure (IS 2046). The durable surface for modular work; post-forming grades wrap curves.
A solid frame holding a floating panel that can move freely — the traditional detail that accommodates wood movement instead of fighting it.
Wood-plastic composite — wood flour + PVC. Genuinely water-immune, so it does the wet-area job at less cost than marine ply.
Study task
Take a real kitchen you know and specify its carcasses honestly, zone by zone: which board and grade for the dry wall units, which for the base cabinets near the sink, which for a bathroom vanity next door. Name the IS code for each, and say in one line why MR would fail where you did not use it. Then pick one solid-wood element — a table top, a door — and describe how you would detail it to ALLOW the wood to move, rather than fight it. That reasoning — grade for exposure, detail for movement — is the professional skill this unit is really teaching.
