Security & Loss Prevention
Every store loses stock to theft and error, and the crude fix - cameras everywhere, tags on everything, a guard at the door - poisons the welcome the whole store was built to create, so the real craft is designing shrinkage down while keeping the store open-hearted
The easiest way to stop theft is to make the store feel like a prison. The hard part - and the real job - is stopping it while the store still feels like a welcome.
Every store loses stock. Some walks out in a pocket, some is taken by staff, some simply vanishes into paperwork errors and damage - the trade calls the total shrinkage, and it comes straight off the profit the whole selling machine works to earn. So security and loss prevention are a real and unavoidable part of retail design, not an afterthought for the guard at the door.
And here is the tension that defines the discipline. The crude way to cut shrinkage is to turn the store into a fortress: cameras staring from every corner, alarm tags on everything, locked cabinets, a guard checking bags, signs warning that thieves will be prosecuted. It works, after a fashion - and it quietly poisons the welcome, the trust and the pleasure that the window, the layout, the light and the staff were all designed to create. A shopper who feels suspected, watched and distrusted does not feel like buying, and does not come back. The real craft of retail security is to design shrinkage down while keeping the store open-hearted - to protect the stock without insulting the customer - and, as with the tech and the IT team, to know where the designer's job ends and the security specialist's begins.
Shrinkage is real, but fortress = poisoned welcome. Visibility first, proportionate tags + cameras, high-value secured+seductive, gracious exit. Specialist specs the systems.
Shrinkage and the fortress trap
Shrinkage is the industry's word for stock that is paid for but never sold - lost to shoplifting, staff theft, supplier fraud, and administrative error and damage. It is a genuine cost, often a few percent of sales, and in thin-margin retail that can be the difference between profit and loss, so no serious store can ignore it. The instinct, understandably, is to lock everything down. But security done crudely is one of the fastest ways to wreck a store's appeal, and understanding that trap is the start of doing it well.
The fortress trap is the mistake of treating every shopper as a suspect. Cameras conspicuously trained on browsers, everything tagged and cabinetted, a guard eyeing people at the door, aggressive warning signage - each measure shaves a little shrinkage and takes a larger bite out of the welcome, the trust and the enjoyment the rest of the store was designed to create. Shoppers can feel distrust, and it is corrosive: a store that treats you like a thief is not one you relax, linger and spend in, and it is certainly not one you feel warm about returning to. The heaviest-handed security often costs more in lost sales and lost loyalty than the theft it prevents.
So the framing for the whole lesson is a balance, and getting it right is the skill. On one side, real shrinkage that must be controlled; on the other, the open, trusting, pleasurable store that actually sells. The best loss prevention leans on measures that deter theft while being nearly invisible to the honest majority - good visibility, well-positioned staff, discreet tagging, sensible camera coverage, and special protection only for the genuinely high-risk, high-value goods - rather than blanketing everyone in suspicion. It also aligns, quietly, with good design in general: an open, well-lit, well-staffed, well-organised store is both more welcoming *and* harder to steal from than a cluttered, blind, under-staffed one. The rest of this lesson works through the layers of that balanced approach - and, throughout, defers the binding specifics to the security specialists whose field this properly is.

Sightlines and visibility - the first defence
The single most powerful loss-prevention tool is also, happily, good design: visibility. A store you can see across - open sightlines, low or well-spaced fixtures, no blind corners or hidden nooks - is far harder to steal from than a maze of tall, dense gondolas and dead corners, because thieves need concealment and an open floor denies it. And the same openness that deters theft also makes the store feel welcoming, easy to navigate and easy to staff. Visibility is the rare security measure that improves the shopping experience rather than degrading it, which is exactly why it should be the first line of defence, designed in from the plan.
This works through natural surveillance - the sense of being in view of staff and other shoppers, which deters far more theft than any camera. A plan where staff, well-positioned (lesson 9.3), can see most of the floor, where the till commands a view of the aisles and the exit, and where sightlines run clean from the entrance to the back does most of the security job invisibly and pleasantly. The designer's levers are concrete: keep fixtures low or open where possible, especially near the perimeter and blind spots; avoid creating hidden corners, recesses and dead-ends where goods can be concealed or pockets filled unseen; use mirrors thoughtfully at genuine blind spots; and give the till a commanding position. Even lighting helps - a bright, evenly lit store leaves nowhere to lurk, while dim corners invite trouble.
There is a real design tension to manage here, and naming it matters: some of the most atmospheric, experiential retail (Module 6 and 7) deliberately uses intimacy, low light, tall fixtures and discovery - the opposite of open visibility. That is legitimate and often desirable, so the answer is not to flatten every store into a bright open box, but to be conscious of the security cost of atmospheric moves and to compensate: more staff presence, discreet tagging or cameras at the intimate spots, high-value goods kept out of the shadows. The principle stands: design for visibility and natural surveillance first, because it deters theft while enhancing the welcome, and treat every blind corner and hidden nook as a deliberate decision with a security price to be paid consciously - not an accident to be discovered after the store starts losing stock.
Tagging, cameras and the technical layers
On top of visibility sit the familiar technical measures, and the craft is deploying them proportionately and discreetly rather than blanketing the store. Electronic article surveillance (EAS) is the tagging system: tags or labels on goods that trigger an alarm at gates by the exit if they pass unpaid, deactivated or removed at the till. It is a broad, relatively gentle deterrent - shoppers are used to it and it does not single anyone out - and it can lean on the same RFID discussed in lesson 9.2. The designer's job is to integrate the gates cleanly at the entrance/exit so they do their work without forming a hostile checkpoint, and to plan for tagging in the operation (where goods are tagged, where tags are removed at the till).
Cameras (CCTV) are the next layer, and the discipline word is *proportion*. Sensible coverage of entrances, tills (where staff theft and till fraud happen), high-value areas and known blind spots is reasonable and expected; papering the whole store with visible cameras trained on every browsing shopper broadcasts distrust and rarely pays for itself. Cameras also carry real privacy and legal obligations - notification, coverage limits, data handling - that belong firmly to the security specialists and the law, not the designer's guesswork. Your role is spatial: plan sensible camera positions and the coverage the security consultant specifies, provide power and cabling, and integrate the equipment so it is present enough to deter but not so aggressive it dominates the space.
Beyond these sit further layers for specific risks - locked or attended cases for genuinely high-value goods (of which more below), security-tagged or dummy display of expensive items with stock held securely, alarms and access control on back-of-house and the safe, and, in some formats, security personnel. The right stack is entirely format-dependent: a luxury jeweller, a phone shop and a supermarket face utterly different risks and deploy utterly different measures. And this is precisely where the designer must know the boundary and defer: loss prevention is a specialist field with its own expertise, technology, data law and operational practice. You design the space, the visibility, the integration and the balance of security with welcome; the security consultant specifies the systems, the coverage, the tagging regime and the compliance. Marry the two - proportionate, discreet, specialist-led measures inside a store designed for visibility - and you protect the stock without ever making the honest shopper feel like a suspect.

The exit, high-value display and keeping the welcome
Two focused problems and one governing principle close the lesson. The first is the entrance and exit - the pinch point where most shoplifting is completed, since the goods must physically leave. This is where the EAS gates sit and where the till is usually placed to watch the door (lesson 9.2), and where the store must be secure *and* welcoming at the very same threshold that lesson 3's decompression zone worked so hard to make open and inviting. The tension is acute: a well-guarded exit and an open, generous entrance are in direct conflict, and clumsy security here - a guard demanding bags, alarm gates that shriek at honest shoppers, a barricaded doorway - undoes the store's whole first and last impression. Design the threshold so its security is present but gracious: gates integrated into the architecture, staff who watch warmly rather than menacingly, a layout that channels departure past the till naturally.
The second is high-value display - the crown jewels every store has, from jewellery and watches to phones, spirits, cosmetics and premium apparel, which attract theft out of all proportion to their shelf space. These deserve special, proportionate protection: locked or attended cases, placement in the most visible, staffed part of the store rather than a quiet corner, display of a secured or dummy item with stock held safely, and often a service model where staff hand the item over. The design challenge is to protect these goods while still displaying them enticingly - a phone chained flat under glare, or a beautiful watch buried in a fortress cabinet, is protected but no longer selling. The best high-value display secures and seduces at once: good light, a sense of preciousness, easy sightlines for both shopper and staff, and security that reads as *care for a valuable object* rather than suspicion of the customer.
The governing principle, and the note the module ends on, is balance and boundary. Balance: security is necessary, but it must be designed so the honest majority - who are almost everyone - never feel accused, because a store that trades trust for a little less shrinkage usually loses more than it saves. Design visibility first, layer proportionate and discreet measures on top, protect the genuine high-value specially, and keep the threshold and the whole floor feeling open-hearted. Boundary: loss prevention is a specialist discipline with real technology, data law and operational depth, so the designer designs the space, the visibility and the balance, and defers the systems, coverage, tagging regime and compliance to the security specialists and the law. Get both right and the store is protected and welcoming at once - which, after nine modules, is the whole art of retail design in miniature: serve the shopper, express the brand, respect the commerce, and never let the machinery show.

- 5Rebalance: propose changes that would cut shrinkage while restoring welcome - better sightlines, a relocated fixture, more staff presence instead of more cameras, cleaner-integrated gates, better high-value display - and mark which decisions you would hand to a security specialist.

Read the band that fits you — or all three.
The architect sets the security bones: the entrance/exit geometry, the floor plate's sightlines, the position of the till and back-of-house, and the securable shell. A threshold designed so EAS gates and a watching till sit naturally without forming a hostile checkpoint, a plate with few inherent blind corners, secure service doors and a securable safe/back-of-house, and provision (power, cabling, mounting) for the security systems the consultant will specify - all are base-build decisions hard to fix later. Coordinate the exit security with the decompression-zone welcome and with fire egress (security must never compromise escape), and defer the loss-prevention systems, CCTV compliance and data law to the security specialists and the code. For chains, standardise a proportionate security provision in the rollout prototype.
Visibility, integration and the security-welcome balance are your craft. Design the floor for natural surveillance - open sightlines, fixtures low or open near blind spots, no hidden nooks, a commanding till, even light - so the store deters theft while feeling welcoming, and treat any atmospheric dark or intimate zone as a conscious security trade-off to compensate for. Integrate EAS gates and cameras cleanly so they deter without dominating; design high-value display that secures *and* seduces (good light, visible placement, locked or attended cases that read as care, not suspicion); and detail the exit so its security is gracious. Keep the honest shopper feeling trusted throughout, and defer the systems, coverage and compliance to the security consultant.
Learn to read a store's security the way a designer does - and to spot the fortress trap. Notice how visible the store is: can you see across it, or is it a maze of blind corners? Where are the cameras and EAS gates, and do they feel proportionate or oppressive? How is the high-value stuff shown - protected but enticing, or locked away and lifeless? Above all, ask how the security makes *you* feel: trusted, or suspected? Absorb the core idea that the crude fix (fortress everything) cuts shrinkage but poisons the welcome that makes a store sell, so the craft is designing visibility first and layering proportionate, discreet measures on top - and knowing that the real systems and the law belong to the security specialist, not you.
