Technology & the Point of Sale

The till is where the sale finally happens and the last thing a shopper remembers - and it now sits inside a growing web of screens, RFID and self-checkout that the designer must make room for without letting the tech run the store

The hook

Every shopper's journey ends at the till - so why is it so often the worst-designed spot in the store?

The point of sale is the climax of the whole selling machine. Everything upstream - the window, the layout, the light, the display - exists to bring the shopper to this moment, where interest finally becomes a purchase. It is also the last thing they experience before they leave, and the last impression they carry away. A calm, quick, friendly checkout sends people out happy and likely to return; a chaotic queue, a fumbling till or a cold self-checkout that will not scan can sour an otherwise good visit and, worse, make people abandon a full basket at the final step.

And the till is no longer just a till. It now sits inside a fast-growing web of in-store technology - card and phone payments, digital screens and displays, RFID tags that track stock, mobile point-of-sale carried by staff, self-checkout and scan-as-you-shop, click-and-collect points, and the data systems behind them all. The designer is not the IT specialist and should not pretend to be - but you must design the space, power, data and sightlines that all this technology needs, and decide where it helps the shopper and where it just gets in the way. This lesson is about designing for the point of sale and the tech around it, humanely, while deferring the wiring to the people who spec it.

The checkout is a designed moment, not just a counter

The checkout - the cashwrap, in trade language - deserves as much design thought as the window, because it is where the sale is won or lost at the last step and where the shopper's final impression is formed. Yet it is often an afterthought: a counter jammed wherever there was room, a queue snaking into the aisles, a cramped surface with no space to set down goods or bag them. Design it properly and it becomes a smooth, reassuring end to the journey; neglect it and you leak sales at the very point everything was built to reach.

Several things must be resolved together. Location - traditionally near the exit so shoppers pay on the way out and staff can watch the door, though its exact place depends on the layout and store size. The queue - where people wait, how the line is organised so it feels orderly and short rather than chaotic (a single snaking line to several tills often feels fairer and faster than one line per till), and crucially, this is prime impulse-purchase territory: the low-value, high-margin goods a waiting shopper adds without planning to (Module 5's checkout impulse). The counter itself - enough surface to set down, scan, wrap and bag comfortably, at a working height, with the POS terminal, payment device, bags and packaging all to hand for the staff. And space to pay and leave without a bottleneck at the door.

The experience goals are simple and human: make the wait feel short and fair, make paying fast and frictionless (contactless and phone payments have transformed this - a two-second tap versus fumbling for cash), and send the shopper out on a warm note - a genuine thank-you, help with bags, an easy exit. The dark-pattern temptation here is real and worth naming: deliberately slow or confusing checkouts, or aggressive last-minute upsells, treat the shopper as prey and breed resentment. Good design does the opposite - it removes friction at the final step because a shopper who finds paying easy and pleasant is more likely to buy now and return later. The point of sale is the handshake at the end of the visit; design it to be firm, quick and warm.

Screens, displays and the digital layer

Increasingly the physical store carries a digital layer - screens and displays woven into the space to inform, sell and express the brand. At its simplest this is digital signage: screens showing pricing, promotions, brand films, lookbooks or wayfinding, replacing or supplementing printed graphics with content that can change instantly across a whole chain. At its most ambitious it is large-format video walls, interactive screens shoppers can browse, product configurators, endless-aisle terminals that let a shopper order an out-of-stock size for home delivery, or magic mirrors in fitting rooms. Used well, the digital layer adds motion, information and theatre; used badly, it adds noise, glare and gimmickry that ages fast.

For the designer the discipline is spatial and editorial, not technical. Where does a screen genuinely help - at a decision point, a queue, a feature display - versus where is it just a screen for its own sake? A store plastered with screens showing the same loud loop quickly feels like an airport, not a brand. How is it integrated - flush and framed as part of the architecture, or bolted on as an obvious afterthought? Screens must be planned into the joinery and walls with power and data run to them, at the right height and angle, with glare and reflection controlled (a bright screen washed out by a spotlight is useless) and content and brightness suited to the light around them.

There is also a strong case for restraint, and it is worth making to clients who want screens everywhere. Physical retail's advantage over the web is precisely that it is physical - real materials, real products to touch, real people. Covering that in screens can throw away the very thing that makes the store worth visiting; a shopper can look at screens at home. The best digital integration is purposeful and often quiet: a screen where it genuinely adds information or wonder, integrated so cleanly it feels part of the store, not a shortcut around designing a real environment. Design the digital layer as you would any other material - deliberately, in the right places, and in service of the shopper and the brand, deferring the display specs, players and networking to the AV and IT team.

RFID, inventory tech and the invisible systems

Some of the most important retail technology is the kind a shopper never notices: the inventory and identification systems that keep the store accurate and connected. Chief among them is RFID (radio-frequency identification) - tiny tags on products, read wirelessly and in bulk, that let a retailer know what stock is actually on the floor and in the back with far more accuracy than manual counts. Accurate stock data is quietly transformational: it means shelves get refilled before they run empty, a shopper can be told reliably whether a size is in stock, online and in-store inventory can be unified (the omnichannel promise of Module 1), and shrinkage is easier to spot. RFID tags also double as the basis for electronic article surveillance at the door (the security of lesson 9.4) and can speed checkout by reading a whole basket at once.

Around RFID sits a wider stack: barcode scanning, the inventory management system, stock-taking tools, and the links between the point of sale, the stockroom and the warehouse or head office. The store is a node in a supply chain and a data network, not an island, and much of the technology exists to keep that node accurate and synchronised. This is why the earlier lesson's tight supply chains and lean back-of-house are possible at all - they run on this invisible information layer.

The designer's role here is deliberately modest but real. You are not specifying the RFID system, the network or the servers - that is firmly the tech and IT team's territory, and you should defer to them on standards, coverage and integration. But you must plan the space and provision these systems need: where RFID readers or security gates sit and how they are integrated at the entrance and checkout, room and cooling for a small server or comms cupboard, cable routes and power to every till and screen, robust wifi coverage, and mounting points that do not clutter the design. The principle is a clean division of labour: the tech team decides what the systems are; you decide where they live and how they disappear into the store. Plan generously for cabling and power early - retrofitting them into a finished fit-out is expensive and ugly - and coordinate closely, because the invisible systems only stay invisible if the space was designed to hide them.

Mobile, self-checkout and designing for change

The point of sale is dissolving from a fixed counter into something more fluid, and the designer has to plan for it. Mobile POS - staff carrying a phone or tablet that takes payment anywhere on the floor - lets a sale close beside the product, in the fitting room, or on a busy day without a fixed queue; it is central to how luxury and Apple-style stores work, where a fixed till would break the experience. Self-checkout and scan-as-you-shop let shoppers scan and pay themselves, common now in grocery and spreading; done well they cut queues, done badly they frustrate (the unexpected item in the bagging area) and raise real loss-prevention questions. And checkout-free stores, where sensors and computer vision let a shopper simply walk out and get charged automatically, point to where some of this is heading.

Each shifts what the designer must provide. Mobile POS means less counter but a need for staff to carry, charge and secure devices, and a way to still bag and (if needed) de-tag goods. Self-checkout means banks of terminals sized and placed for flow, with staff on hand to help and supervise, and security thought through because unstaffed payment invites both honest error and theft. The common thread: the checkout is no longer one place, and a store may blend fixed tills, mobile POS and self-service. Design flexibly - power and data where tills might go, counters that can be reconfigured - so the store can adapt as its payment mix changes.

That flexibility is the closing principle, because retail technology changes faster than the store around it. A fit-out lasts years; the tech inside it will be upgraded several times in that life. So design the space to be tech-ready and adaptable rather than hard-wiring today's exact kit into the architecture: generous, accessible cable routes and power; screens and terminals that can be swapped; a layout that can flex from more tills to more self-checkout as behaviour shifts. Keep the human at the centre - technology in retail should make the sale faster, the service better and the shopper's life easier, not replace the warmth and help that are physical retail's whole advantage. And keep the division of labour clean throughout: you design the space, power and experience; the tech team specs and runs the systems. Marry those two well and the store feels effortless at the very moment it matters most.

  1. 1Watch the moment: observe (or recall) the checkout in use. Time or estimate the wait, note how the queue is organised, whether there is room to set down and bag goods, and how the exit past the door works. Mark every point of friction.
  2. 2Read the impulse and the tech: what impulse goods sit in the queue, and do they feel helpful or cynical? What technology is present - fixed tills, mobile POS, self-checkout, screens - and does each speed the sale and serve the shopper, or just add noise?
  3. 3Judge the last impression: how does the shopper feel at the very end - rushed, watched, warmly thanked? Note what the checkout does to the whole visit's memory.
  4. 4Redesign the space: sketch a better cashwrap - location, queue organisation, counter and wrap space, impulse placement, screen use (or removal), and the payment mix (fixed, mobile, self) - keeping the sale fast, calm and human. Mark where power and data must run.
  5. 5Draw the boundary: list which decisions in your redesign are yours (space, sightlines, integration, experience) and which you would hand to the tech/IT team (systems, network, payment security). This is the professional division of labour.

The architect must make the base-build tech-ready, because power, data and comms are hard to add later. Plan generous cable routes, riser and containment; a location and cooling for a comms/server cupboard; power and data to every likely till, screen and gate position; robust structural and electrical provision for large screens and video walls; and the entrance geometry that security gates and RFID readers will need. For multi-store rollouts, bake a standard tech-and-power provision into the prototype kit so each site is ready for the brand's systems. Coordinate early with the retailer's IT and AV consultants and defer all system specs, network design and electrical compliance to them and the code - your job is the space, provision and integration, not the wiring diagram.

The checkout and the visible tech are squarely your craft - design them as considered moments, not afterthoughts. Detail the cashwrap for real use: working height, room to scan, wrap and bag, POS and payment to hand, impulse goods in the queue, a warm exit. Integrate screens flush into joinery with glare controlled and content suited to the light; resist the client who wants screens everywhere - restraint protects the physical experience that is the store's advantage. Plan for mobile POS and self-checkout with the flexibility to reconfigure as the payment mix changes. Hide the invisible systems - readers, cabling, gates - so cleanly they disappear. Throughout, keep the sale fast, calm and human, and defer the system specs to the tech team.

Misconception check

Retail technology is the IT team's job - the designer just leaves a spot for the till and lets the tech people install whatever screens and systems the retailer buys.

The systems are the tech team's job, but the space for them is emphatically the designer's - and getting it wrong is expensive and ugly to fix. The designer plans where the point of sale sits and how it works as a human moment (queue, impulse, wrap space, warm exit), where screens genuinely help versus add noise, how they integrate into the joinery with glare controlled, where security gates and RFID readers live at the entrance, and - critically - the cable routes, power, data and comms provision that all of it needs, run generously and early because retrofitting them into a finished fit-out is painful. Because retail tech changes faster than the fit-out around it, the space must be tech-ready and adaptable rather than hard-wired to today's exact kit. The clean division of labour is: the tech team decides what the systems are; you decide where they live, how they disappear into the store, and how they serve rather than replace the human warmth that is physical retail's advantage.
