How Shoppers Behave
Before you draw a single fixture, you have to know the one thing the whole store is built around - not how you imagine shoppers behave, but how, watched closely, they actually do
The most important person in any store you design never reads your drawings, never hears your reasoning, and does exactly what they feel like doing.
Stand quietly near the door of a busy shop for twenty minutes and watch. You will see the same small dramas repeat. People step in and slow, almost stall, for a few paces before they really start shopping. They drift to the right. Their eyes flick across displays and settle, unbidden, on some things and skip others entirely. A woman reaches for a rack in a narrow aisle, feels someone pass close behind her, and moves on without buying. A man on a mission cuts straight to the back, grabs what he came for and leaves. None of these people could tell you why they did any of it - and that is exactly the point.
Retail design begins not with a mood board but with the shopper, observed. The pioneers of the field, Paco Underhill and the retail anthropologists among them, earned their insights not by asking shoppers what they do - people are famously unreliable about their own behaviour - but by watching thousands of them on video and tally sheet, and finding patterns so consistent they behave almost like physics. This lesson gathers the behaviours every retail designer should carry in their head: the turn-right tendency, the decompression effect, the invariant right, the butt-brush effect and the boustrophedon path, and the deep divide between the shopper on a mission and the shopper who is browsing. Learn these, and you stop designing for the tidy, rational customer who exists only in your imagination, and start designing for the real, distracted, habit-driven human who actually walks through your door.

Watch what they do, not what they say
The founding discipline of retail design is observation. Ask a shopper how they moved through a store and they will give you a confident, rational account - "I went in, found the shirts, compared two, bought one" - that bears little resemblance to what a camera would have recorded: the pause at the door, the drift rightward, the three displays they touched and abandoned, the aisle they refused to enter, the impulse chocolate at the till. People are poor witnesses to their own behaviour because most of it is fast, automatic and beneath conscious notice. This is why the retail-anthropology tradition, most famously Paco Underhill's in *Why We Buy*, built its knowledge from watching - tracking thousands of shoppers on video, counting, timing, mapping paths - rather than from surveys and focus groups.
For the designer this has a liberating consequence: much of shopper behaviour is regular and predictable, consistent enough across cultures and formats to design around with confidence. People really do tend to enter and decompress, drift right, travel in a weaving path, avoid tight squeezes, and respond to merchandise placed at eye level and in their natural line of sight. These are not iron laws - culture, signage, crowding and the specific shopper all bend them - but they are strong tendencies, and a store designed in ignorance of them fights its own customers.
The practical habit to build now is to treat every claim about shoppers, including your own intuitions and the client's assertions, as a hypothesis to be checked against observed behaviour. Before a refit, watch the existing store. After it opens, watch again: where do people slow, where do they turn, what do they walk past, where do baskets get abandoned? The cheapest and most powerful research tool in retail is a designer standing still with a notebook. Everything that follows in this lesson - the named behaviours - is really just a starting vocabulary for what you will see when you look. The behaviours give you the pattern; watching your own store tells you how that pattern plays out in your specific space, with your specific shopper, selling your specific goods.
Shoppers are unreliable narrators. Watch the camera, not the questionnaire.
The behaviours every designer should know
A handful of observed patterns recur so reliably that they have earned names, and together they form a designer's behavioural toolkit. The decompression effect (or landing strip) is the first: for the first few steps inside a door, a shopper is still adjusting - slowing from pavement pace, reading the space, getting their bearings - and is effectively blind to merchandise, signage and prices placed there. Goods, key displays and hard-sell in that zone are largely wasted; the entrance should instead be open and welcoming, a breath of space before the selling begins (Module 2 treats this zone in detail).
The turn-right tendency follows: in countries where people drive and walk on a given side, most shoppers, once past the entrance, drift to the right and circulate anti-clockwise. The area just to the right of the entrance is prime real estate - often the power wall (Module 4) - because it catches the eye first. Closely related is the invariant right: shoppers' eyes and hands favour the right, so right-hand placement on shelves and in the path earns more attention. Then the butt-brush effect, one of Underhill's most cited findings: shoppers, and women especially, will abandon merchandise in an aisle too narrow to examine goods without being brushed from behind - so tight aisles at key displays quietly kill sales. Finally the boustrophedon path - named for the back-and-forth of an ox ploughing a field - describes how shoppers weave up and down rather than march in straight lines, which layouts can either support or fight.
Treat these as calibrated tendencies, not commandments. Aisle widths that avoid butt-brush, the depth of a decompression zone, the strength of the right-turn bias - all vary by market, format, crowd density and the specific shopper, and the figures this course cites are illustrative as of 2026, to calibrate to your brand and site, never to copy blind. Binding dimensions - clear widths for accessibility and egress - come from the current codes and an accessibility consultant, not from a behavioural rule of thumb. But knowing these named behaviours means you will recognise them the moment you watch a real store, and design with the grain of human habit rather than against it.
Mission shoppers and browsing shoppers
Beneath the universal behaviours lies a more strategic split: why the shopper came. Broadly, shoppers arrive in one of two modes, and the same person is in different modes on different days. The mission shopper has a goal - milk and bread, a phone charger, a gift for tonight - and wants to accomplish it with minimum friction: find the thing, pay, leave. For them the store's job is speed and findability - clear sightlines and signage, a short and obvious path to the goods, well-stocked shelves, and a fast checkout. Frustrate a mission shopper with a confusing layout or a slow queue and you do not just lose today's sale; you train them to shop elsewhere or online. The kirana milk run, the weekly grocery top-up, the dash for a forgotten ingredient are all mission trips.
The browsing shopper is the opposite: open to discovery, shopping for pleasure or inspiration as much as for any specific item, happy to wander and be surprised. For them the store's job is to reward exploration - a winding, interesting path, atmosphere and story, focal displays that invite a closer look, room to linger and handle goods, and moments of delight. The weekend mall wander, the festive-season outing, the leisurely browse of a bookshop or a homeware store are browsing trips, and they are where much impulse and discovery spending happens.
The design challenge is that most stores must serve both at once, and the two briefs pull in opposite directions - the mission shopper wants a straight line, the browser wants a scenic route. Great layouts resolve this: they offer a clear, fast spine for the mission (the obvious route to the staples and the till) while lining it with tempting, explorable bays for the browser, so a quick trip can become a longer one without the mission shopper ever feeling lost or slowed. Grocery design is a master class in this - the essentials placed to pull you through the whole store, but with clear signage so the mission is never thwarted. Knowing which mode your core shopper is usually in, and designing to serve it while tempting the other, is one of the most consequential early decisions in any retail brief.
Design around behaviour - and serve, never trick
Understanding how shoppers behave gives the designer real power, and power in retail carries an ethical edge. The same knowledge that lets you place the staples where they pull shoppers past tempting goods could be used to hide the exits, bury the cheaper option, or engineer confusion that traps people - and some retailers do exactly that. This course names those tactics for what they are: dark patterns, bad practice, and ultimately self-defeating, because shoppers who feel tricked do not return. The through-line of this whole course holds here: good retail design sells more by serving the shopper better, not by manipulating them. Using behavioural knowledge to make a store easier, clearer and more pleasant - staples easy to find, the path intuitive, aisles wide enough to shop in comfort, displays that genuinely help people choose - aligns the shopper's interest with the retailer's. Using it to deceive breaks that alignment and, eventually, the business.
So the working method is: observe, hypothesise, design, and test. Observe real shoppers in a comparable store. Form a hypothesis about how they will move and what they will notice in your design. Make the design serve those behaviours - open the decompression zone, put a strong display where the eye first lands, widen the aisles at key fixtures, lay a clear spine for the mission and scenic bays for the browser. Then, once open, watch again and adjust: the real store will always surprise you. This loop - watch, design, watch again - is how retail design improves, and it keeps the designer honest, because the scoreboard (Module 1.3) and the shoppers' own behaviour will tell you plainly whether the store is working.
Above all, resist designing for the imaginary rational shopper - the one who reads every sign, walks the logical route, weighs every option and is immune to crowding, fatigue and impulse. That shopper does not exist. The shopper who exists is distracted, habit-driven, in a hurry or a daydream, influenced by where things sit and how the space feels, and gloriously human. Design for that person - with respect, not cynicism - and the store will work for everyone.

Watching and counting shoppers is standard practice; where footage or footfall analytics are recorded, defer privacy, consent and signage requirements to the current data-protection law and a specialist. Module 9.

The whole discipline of reading shoppers begins with standing still and watching. In this workshop you will observe a real, busy store and map the named behaviours onto what you actually see - the surest way to turn this lesson's vocabulary into a designer's instinct.

- 1Position yourself discreetly near the entrance of a busy store for about ten minutes. Tally how many shoppers pause or slow in the first few steps (the decompression effect) and which way they turn - count left versus right to test the turn-right tendency for this store.
- 2Follow three or four shoppers (discreetly and respectfully) and sketch each one's rough path. Do they weave back and forth (boustrophedon) or march straight? Where do their eyes and hands land - note any right-hand bias.
- 3Find the narrowest aisle at a key display and watch it: do shoppers enter and linger, or avoid it or leave quickly when brushed from behind? Record one clear instance of the butt-brush effect if you see it.
- 4Classify the shoppers you watched as mission or browsing, and note how the store serves (or fails) each - is there a clear fast spine for the mission and tempting bays for the browser?
- 5Write a one-page read: which named behaviours you observed, where the store works with shopper behaviour and where it fights it, and the single change that would best serve the real shoppers you watched.
You’ll walk away with
A one-page observation report: tallies for decompression and turn direction, three or four sketched shopper paths, one butt-brush instance, a mission-versus-browsing split, and the highest-impact change. Keep it - comparing it to a store you later design will sharpen your eye fast.

Shopper behaviour should shape the shell and shopfront you set, because the bones either enable good flow or fight it. Frontage width and the position of the entrance determine where the decompression zone falls and which way the turn-right bias sends people; floor-plate depth and column grid set how long and legible the boustrophedon path can be; the location of the core, services and back-of-house decides whether a clear mission spine is even possible. Decide these with the selling flow in mind, not just structural convenience, and coordinate clear widths and egress with the accessibility and fire consultants - behavioural aisle guidance never overrides a code-mandated dimension. For multi-store rollouts, remember that behaviour is broadly consistent across sites, which is exactly why a well-tuned prototype layout travels well.
This is your daily material: the layout, fixtures, path and sightlines that turn behavioural patterns into sales. You place the power wall where the eye first lands, size aisles to beat butt-brush at key displays, keep the decompression zone open, lay a clear spine for the mission shopper and line it with explorable bays for the browser, and set focal points that pull the weaving path deeper. Design to the behaviours, calibrate the benchmarks to this brand and site, and then - crucially - watch the opened store and adjust. Your fixtures and finishes must also survive the heavy, close-contact use that real shopper behaviour involves, and be refit-friendly as you learn what the space's actual behaviour demands.
You can study this every time you enter a shop - the whole discipline is visible to anyone who watches. Pick a busy store and stand near the door for ten minutes: watch people decompress, drift right, weave, avoid narrow aisles, and split into the hurried and the wandering. Train the habit of treating every claim about shoppers - including your own hunches - as something to check against what people actually do. You are not expected to run eye-tracking studies yet; you are expected to learn to see the behaviour, name it, and understand how a store's design either works with it or against it.
