Interior Landscape

The course that brings plants and landscape indoors — interior plantscaping and biophilic design — taught from the designer's chair and honest about the folklore, because no corner of interior design is more wrapped in confident myth than houseplants. It opens with the role of plants in the built interior, and with the single correction that reframes the whole subject: the belief that houseplants meaningfully PURIFY indoor air is a myth. The famous NASA study of 1989 tested plants in sealed chambers, not rooms; the 2019 review by Cummings and Waring showed that to match the air cleaning of ordinary ventilation you would need an impossible number of plants per square metre; and the 'snake plant in the bedroom for oxygen' line rests on a real but negligible effect. The honest, evidenced reason to bring plants indoors is BIOPHILIC — the psychological wellbeing, restoration and stress reduction that real research supports (Ulrich's hospital-window study, the Kaplans' attention-restoration work) — not air cleaning, and teaching that distinction straight is the spine of the course. It then makes a designer competent to keep plants alive: the physical requirements — light, which is the number-one limiting factor indoors, temperature, water, growing medium, humidity, acclimatisation — and the plain truth that OVERWATERING, not neglect, kills most houseplants, along with the pests and diseases to watch. It turns to the elements and principles of an interior landscape: the design use of plant texture, colour, height and spacing; indoor water features and their honest maintenance and stagnant-water cautions; vertical gardens and green walls, whose 'low-maintenance' reputation is a myth given their irrigation, root health and replacement demands; and the Japanese arts so often misunderstood — the Zen garden that is dry rock and gravel rather than a flower bed, Bonsai that is a TECHNIQUE of training ordinary trees rather than a dwarf species, and Ikebana that is a disciplined art of line, asymmetry and negative space rather than a Western bouquet. It closes on hardscape and the roof or terrace garden, where the truths are structural: a green roof is not soil piled on a slab but a layered build-up — waterproof membrane, root barrier, drainage layer, filter fabric and lightweight growing medium over a structural deck designed for the SATURATED load — and every layer is non-negotiable. A site visit grounds it all in real interior landscapes. Throughout, it names the myth, shows the evidence, and says where a lux level, a saturated weight or a species fact is a guide to confirm rather than a constant.

Unit 1Landscape & the Built Interior

The role of landscape in the built interior, and the correction that reframes the whole subject. Plants indoors do real work — they shape and soften space, screen and divide, mark a threshold, bring nature into a room — and the honest account of their functions has to start by killing the biggest myth: that houseplants meaningfully PURIFY the air. They do not. The famous NASA Clean Air Study (Wolverton, 1989) tested plants in small SEALED chambers, and its results do not translate to a ventilated room; the 2019 review by Cummings and Waring showed the clean-air delivery rate of a potted plant is tiny beside ordinary ventilation, so you would need an impossible number of plants to matter; and the 'snake plant releases oxygen at night' line rests on a real CAM effect that is, in oxygen terms, negligible. What IS true, and well-evidenced, is the BIOPHILIC benefit — the psychological wellbeing, attention restoration and stress reduction that plants and views of nature genuinely provide (Ulrich's 1984 hospital-window study, the Kaplans' attention-restoration theory, workplace-wellbeing research). So the designer's honest case for interior plants is about people feeling better, not air being cleaned. On that footing: the classification of plants a designer needs (by light tolerance, by form and habit); the functions, layout and components of interior planting (specimen, mass, screen, trailing, feature); the SELECTION of reliable species for real indoor conditions; and honest pest control, because a plant brought indoors brings its pests with it.

Unit 2Keeping Plants Alive — Requirements & Biology

What an indoor plant actually needs, and why most die. LIGHT is the number-one limiting factor indoors and the constraint that binds every plant choice — a room that looks bright to a human eye is often dim to a plant, and light falls off fast from a window, so matching a species' light need to the real light of a spot is the first and most consequential decision. Then TEMPERATURE (and the draughts and cold that houseplants hate), WATER, and the plain, unglamorous truth that OVERWATERING — not forgetting to water — is the number-one killer of houseplants, because soggy medium starves roots of air and rots them. The GROWING MEDIUM, and why indoor plants live in a light, free-draining soilless potting mix rather than heavy garden soil; a soil separator; HUMIDITY, which many popular plants quietly need and dry air-conditioned interiors deny; ACCLIMATISATION, the reason a plant sulks and drops leaves when first moved indoors; and the WEIGHT of a planter full of wet medium, which is a real load a designer must account for on a shelf, a partition or a floor. The underlying plant biology — soil, moisture, light, nutrients and atmosphere — and the PESTS (spider mites, mealybugs, scale, fungus gnats, aphids) and DISEASES (root rot, powdery mildew) that follow, handled by honest integrated pest management rather than reflexive spraying. Getting light, water and drainage right is most of the job.

Unit 3Elements, Principles & the Japanese Arts

Composing an interior landscape, and grading the styles honestly. The design principles applied to planting — using the physical attributes of plants (TEXTURE, COLOUR, HEIGHT and SPACING) and their visual and functional effects to make a composition with repetition, contrast and a focal point, rather than a scattering of pots. The interior landscaping ELEMENTS: specimen and mass planting, trailing and screening, and indoor WATER FEATURES — pools, fountains and cascades — with their honest caution, because moving water indoors brings humidity, maintenance and a stagnant-water and Legionella risk if neglected. VERTICAL landscaping and green/living WALLS, whose 'low-maintenance' reputation is a myth: they are demanding systems needing irrigation, drainage, root health, lighting and regular replacement, and they fail visibly when starved of that care. And the three Japanese arts that interior landscape borrows and that are so often misunderstood: the ZEN garden (karesansui), which is dry raked rock and gravel, symbolic and usually plant-less, not a flower bed; JAPANESE garden principles of asymmetry, borrowed scenery (shakkei) and negative space (ma); BONSAI, which is a TECHNIQUE — the training, pruning and root confinement of an ordinary tree to keep it small — and not a naturally dwarf species; and IKEBANA, the disciplined Japanese art of arrangement built on line, minimalism, asymmetry and negative space, with its schools (Ikenobo, Sogetsu, Ohara), which is a world away from a full Western flower bouquet.

Unit 4Hardscape & the Roof / Terrace Garden

The non-living elements and the structural truths. HARDSCAPE — the rocks, artifacts, paving, sculpture, lighting, garden furniture and architectural features that give an interior landscape its bones and let plants read against something — chosen and placed as deliberately as the planting. Then the ROOF and TERRACE garden, where the honesty is structural, because a roof garden is not soil piled on a slab: it is a layered BUILD-UP, and every layer is non-negotiable — a tested WATERPROOF membrane over the structural deck (a leak here means removing the whole garden to fix it), a ROOT BARRIER (without which roots find and open the smallest flaw in the waterproofing — the classic failure), a DRAINAGE layer that carries surplus water to the outlets so roots never waterlog, a FILTER fabric that stops the medium silting the drainage, and a LIGHTWEIGHT engineered growing medium rather than heavy garden soil. Above all, the LOAD: everything adds weight, and the weight is greatest when the medium is SATURATED after rain and irrigation, so the structure must be designed or checked for that saturated load — the difference between a light 'extensive' roof of shallow tough planting and a heavy 'intensive' roof of deep richer planting is fundamentally a structural one. Provisions for irrigation, utilities, material selection and maintenance complete it. The unit's practical exercise — a courtyard, an outdoor room, a terrace garden — is where plants, rocks, artifacts, paving and lighting come together over a build-up that actually works.

Unit 5Site Visit & Practice

Seeing interior landscape in the flesh, and putting the course together. A site visit to real landscaped spaces — a commercial atrium, a residential courtyard, a public interior, a specialised indoor garden or conservatory — to read how the principles hold up in practice: how the planting is lit and kept alive, how a water feature is maintained, how a green wall is irrigated and where it is failing, how a roof garden drains and carries its load. The habit the visit builds is the designer's honest eye: to see past the photograph to the maintenance regime behind a thriving interior landscape, and to recognise, in a browning green wall or a rotting planter, the requirement that was ignored. And the synthesis of the course — that an interior landscape is a designed composition of living and non-living elements that works only when the light, the water, the drainage, the load and the upkeep are all honestly provided for, and whose real gift to the people who use the space is biophilic wellbeing, not a cleaner-air claim it cannot keep.

Will a wall of plants purify the office air?
