Light is the number-one limit indoors, and overwatering is the number-one killer
A designer who specifies plants has to be able to keep them alive, and two facts explain most deaths. Light is the number-one limiting factor indoors — a room that looks bright to your eye is often dim to a plant — and overwatering, not neglect, is the number-one killer, because soggy medium rots roots that need air. Add the soilless medium, humidity, acclimatisation, the real weight of a wet planter, and the pests that follow, and you have most of the job.

Indoor plants live in a light soilless mix, not heavy garden soil; a wet planter is a real design load; and a plant brings its pests, handled by inspection and IPM, not reflex spraying.[3, 4]
A bright room is dim to a plant
Light is the number-one limiting factor indoors, and the single most consequential decision in the whole subject. The human eye adapts so well that a room feels bright while receiving a fraction of the light a plant needs — and light falls off very fast as you move away from a window, so a spot two or three metres in feels fine to you and is starvation to a plant. Matching a species' light need to the ACTUAL light of a location is what keeps it alive; get this wrong and no amount of watering or feeding will save it. Horticulturists put rough numbers on it (extension figures vary, so treat these as ranges): 'low light' is on the order of 75 foot-candles, 'medium' around 150, 'bright' 300 and up, and true direct sun well over 1,500 — where one foot-candle is about 10.76 lux, and full outdoor summer sun is around 10,000 foot-candles, a reminder of how dim even a bright room is by comparison. Where the design demands plants in genuinely dark spots, the honest answers are low-light species, rotation, or supplementary grow-lighting, not hope.[1]

Key terms
The input in shortest supply that caps a plant's growth. Indoors, that is almost always LIGHT — get it right first.
The fast drop in light with distance from a window. A spot that looks bright to you can be starvation-dim to a plant a few metres in.
The number-one killer of houseplants — soggy medium starves roots of air and rots them, usually fatal before the leaves show it.
A light, free-draining indoor growing medium (peat/coir, perlite, bark). Holds air and water in balance — unlike heavy, compacting garden soil.
A plant's adjustment when moved (e.g. from a bright nursery to a dim interior). It sulks and drops leaves for a while — adjustment, not death.

Small flies whose larvae breed in constantly-wet medium — a telltale sign of overwatering as much as a pest in themselves.
Study task
Take a plant you or a friend has lost and diagnose it honestly. Which requirement failed — too little light for the species, overwatering and root rot, a dry-air spot for a humidity-lover, or an unaddressed pest? Then write the care regime that would have saved it: the light it needed, how you would water it (by checking, not by schedule), the medium and drainage, and the one pest to watch. Finally, for a large planter you would place on a shelf or partition, note the saturated weight as a real load. Diagnosing why a plant died and writing the regime that keeps the next one alive — light and water above all — is the skill this unit builds.
