Most people killed by building fires never touch a flame - smoke and toxic gas reach them first, often within minutes. This lesson reframes fire safety as a life-safety strategy you design in from the first sketch, built on three jobs: detect early, escape fast, contain long.

What this course covers

  • 1Fire Science & Behaviour. The physics you must feel: combustion and the fire triangle, how a fire grows through its stages, the smoke and toxicity that actually kill, and how whole buildings burn.
  • 2Occupancy, Load & Risk. Who is at risk, and how much: occupancy classification, occupant load and capacity, risk and hazard assessment, and the human factor in how people really evacuate.
  • 3Means of Escape. The single most important thing: the principles of egress, travel distance and exits, the stairs, corridors and doors that form the escape route, and refuge and accessible egress for everyone.
  • 4Passive Fire Protection. Buying time with the building itself: compartmentation, fire resistance and ratings, fire-stopping and penetrations, and structural fire protection.

Before any detail: what fire really does to a building and its people (and why smoke, not flame, is the killer), how fire and smoke spread, the codes and framework, and the shift from a checklist to a life-safety strategy.
