Advanced Materials & Applications
A detailing course in three parts — the openings that puncture a wall, the systems that divide a space, and the finishes that dress it — closed by an opening-schedule project and a look at how it is fixed on site. It is taught from the interior designer's chair, not the manufacturer's brochure: what you must know to specify the right door, detail the right partition, and choose the right finish, and to see through the 'advanced material' sales line to what is genuine progress. It opens with the openings themselves — doors, windows and ventilators — as a taxonomy of MATERIAL, OPERATION and nature: a leaf can swing, slide, fold, pivot, revolve, hang from the top or the bottom or louvre, and each operation sets the clearance it needs and the seal it can make; and the honest material question, because 'aluminium and uPVC have overtaken timber' is only half true — aluminium thermally bridges unless it has a thermal break, uPVC has its own weathering and fire trade-offs, and timber's thermal performance was always good; the real advance is the double-glazed unit, and 'double glazing is only for cold countries' is a myth, because in India it cuts heat gain and noise. It moves to wall systems — non-load-bearing partitions, paneling and space dividers, fixed, sliding and sliding-and-folding, in wood, steel and aluminium frames with glass, board and gypsum panels — and to the one subject this trade most misunderstands: acoustics. It draws the hard line between sound ABSORPTION and sound ISOLATION, and kills the commonest myth in interiors, that foam or soft panels 'soundproof' a room: they tame echo, they do not block transmission, which is a matter of MASS, sealed gaps, decoupled studs and cavity insulation, measured as STC. It then turns to wall finishes — the paints, their composition and honest characteristics, from distemper and cement paint to emulsion, enamel, PU and epoxy, and the special paints graded for what they really do: intumescent fire coatings that are a rated system not a magic spray, luminous paint that marks an escape route rather than lighting a room, bituminous paint that damp-proofs a foundation rather than decorating a wall — plus the myth that emulsion is waterproof (it is water-resistant), the truth that surface preparation and primer decide a paint job more than the brand, and the confusion of POP with gypsum board, which are not the same thing. It covers plasters, adhesives and sealants (and why one sealant does not fit all — sanitary silicone for a wet joint, polyurethane for a moving one), and wet versus dry cladding. It closes on the professional deliverable — the door, window and partition SCHEDULES and details that turn a design into something a contractor can build and price — and on how it is all fixed on site. Throughout it names the myth, shows the standard, and says where a number is a guide to confirm rather than a constant.

Unit 1 — Doors, Windows & Ventilators
LiveThe openings that puncture a wall, classified three ways. By MATERIAL — timber, engineered and industrial (flush, factory) timber, mild steel, aluminium, uPVC, glass and concrete — each with an honest account of what it does well and badly, because the course objective's claim that 'advanced technologies have overtaken old' is only half true: aluminium is strong, slim and low-maintenance but thermally BRIDGES unless it carries a thermal break; uPVC insulates and needs no painting but weathers, discolours and behaves differently in fire; and timber, the 'old' material, always had good thermal performance and only asks for maintenance. By OPERATION — how the leaf moves: fixed, openable/casement, sliding, folding (bi-fold), sliding-and-folding, pivoted, revolving, top-hung, bottom-hung and louvred/jalousie — each of which sets the clearance the opening needs and the seal it can make (a fixed light seals best because it never opens; a slider saves swing space but only ever opens half; a top-hung ventilator sheds rain; a revolving door is really an air-lock). And by NATURE — French, corner and bay. The real material advance is the double-glazed (insulated glass) unit, and the myth that 'double glazing is only for cold countries' is false: in India it cuts solar heat gain and noise, especially with a Low-E coating. Understood through sketches, product literature and case studies, and against the Indian standards for each material (timber shutters IS 1003; steel doors/windows/ventilators IS 1038, with IS 4351 the steel door FRAME; aluminium window IS 1948 made from IS 733 sections; uPVC profiles IS 17953:2023) with the honest note that the NBC edition most quoted, SP 7:2016, is withdrawn and superseded by SP 7:2026.
Unit 2 — Wall Systems, Partitions & Paneling
LiveThe systems that divide a space without carrying the building — and the subject interiors most misunderstands, acoustics. Non-load-bearing PARTITIONS, fixed, sliding and sliding-and-folding, built from a FRAME (wood, steel or aluminium) carrying PANELS (glass, particle board, MDF, gypsum board, plywood), and the drywall build-up of studs, board layers and cavity insulation that is the modern standard. Wall PANELING and space DIVIDERS as the designer's flexible room-shaping tools. Then acoustics, told straight: the hard difference between sound ABSORPTION (taming the echo and reverberation INSIDE a room, with soft, porous, fabric-wrapped panels) and sound ISOLATION (BLOCKING sound from passing between rooms) — and the single commonest myth in interiors, that acoustic foam, egg-cartons or soft panels 'soundproof' a space. They do not: they absorb reflections, they barely block transmission. What blocks sound is MASS (the mass law — heavier, denser barriers isolate more), continuous SEALING (a small gap wrecks isolation), DECOUPLING (double or staggered studs, resilient channels so the two faces don't share a rigid path) and CAVITY INSULATION (mineral or glass wool damping the air gap) — all measured as STC, the Sound Transmission Class. A single glass partition looks clean but isolates poorly; a double-glazed or laminated glazed partition does far better. Thermal paneling and insulation (fibreglass wool, and cork for a modest acoustic and thermal role) round it out. The lesson: specify a partition for the performance you need, and never confuse making a room quieter INSIDE with keeping sound OUT.
Unit 3 — Wall Finishes — Paints & Plasters
LiveThe finishes that dress a wall, and the folklore around them. PAINT composition in one honest frame — a binder (resin) that forms the film, pigment for colour and opacity, a solvent or water vehicle that carries it, and additives — and the types a designer specifies: whitewash and distemper (cheap, matt, non-washable), cement paint (exterior masonry, breathing but chalking), ENAMEL (hard, glossy, solvent-based, for wood and metal trim), plastic and acrylic EMULSION (the water-based interior default, low-odour and wipeable), exterior emulsion (weather- and UV-resistant, elastomeric grades bridging hairline cracks), PU (tough premium wood finishing) and EPOXY (seamless, hygienic, for floors and wet areas). Sheen — matt, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, gloss — chosen for wear and for how much it forgives a wall. The SPECIAL paints, graded honestly for what they truly do: intumescent fire-protective coatings, which are a RATED system (they char and swell to protect steel for a specified period at a specified thickness), not a magic spray; luminous/photoluminescent paint, which glows briefly to mark an escape route, not to light a room; and bituminous paint, which damp-proofs a foundation and is never a decorative wall colour. The myths that matter: 'emulsion / washable paint is waterproof' (it is water-RESISTANT and wipeable, not waterproof — an interior emulsion fails in a wet area, and even a weatherproof exterior emulsion is not a tanking membrane); 'primer is optional' (surface preparation and the right primer decide a paint job far more than the top-coat brand); and 'more coats is always better'. Surface preparation and application for each finish, VOC and low-VOC and indoor air, and gypsum and POP finishes — with the important distinction that POP (plaster of Paris, wet-applied, heavier, prone to cracking) is NOT the same as gypsum plasterboard (a stable manufactured panel). Adhesives and SEALANTS, and why one sealant does not fit all: neutral-cure and sanitary/anti-fungal silicone for wet joints, acrylic for low-movement paintable joints, polyurethane and MS polymer for moving and exterior joints. And wet versus dry cladding — adhesive/mortar-fixed versus mechanically-fixed and ventilated.
Unit 4 — Detailing & Opening Schedules
LiveThe professional deliverable the syllabus project asks for: detailing a small commercial space through its OPENING SCHEDULES and partition details. The language of a schedule — the DOOR SCHEDULE, WINDOW SCHEDULE and ventilator schedule that tabulate every opening by a mark or type reference, size, material, operation, glazing, finish, fire rating and the IRONMONGERY/HARDWARE set (hinges, locks, closers, handles) — so a contractor can price and build without ambiguity, and so nothing is forgotten. The DETAIL DRAWING itself: the head, jamb and sill of an opening drawn at large scale to show the frame, the seal, the fixing to the wall, the finish junction and how water and sound are kept out; and the partition detail showing frame, board layers, insulation and the junctions at floor, ceiling and abutting wall. How an opening schedule is coordinated with the plan (the mark on the plan points to the row in the schedule), and why the schedule is where a designer's material and operation choices from Units I–III become buildable, priceable instructions. Detailing is where design meets construction, and the schedule is the instrument that makes a specification real.
Unit 5 — On Site & the Industry
LiveHow the openings, partitions and finishes are actually FIXED on site, and how a designer stays honest and current. The FIXER details — the anchors, lugs, frame cramps, packing and sealing that fix a door or window frame into an opening true, plumb and weather-tight; the way a dry partition is set out, tracked, boarded, taped and jointed; and the sequence and tolerance that decide whether a detail drawn cleanly actually assembles. The value of the industrial visit and the industry seminar the syllabus sets: seeing the paneling materials, the space dividers, the wall finishes and the fixer details in the flesh, and hearing from the people who install them where the drawing meets the reality of the wall. And the professional habit this course builds: reading product literature critically, specifying to a standard rather than a brand, and telling the genuine material advance from the marketing — because the materials market moves fast, and a designer who can see through the sales line specifies buildings that work and last.
