Where material and operation choices become buildable, priceable instructions

Detailing is where the material and operation choices of the earlier units become buildable, priceable instructions. This unit covers the professional deliverable the syllabus project asks for: the door, window and ventilator schedules that tabulate every opening so nothing is forgotten, the ironmongery schedule where fire and accessibility become orderable items, and the head-jamb-sill and partition details where a design proves it actually assembles, seals and drains.

Every opening, tabulated

Opening schedules

A schedule pins down every opening — mark, size, material, operation, glazing, finish, fire rating and hardware set — so a contractor can price and build it. If it is not scheduled, it is not ordered.[1, 2]

Every opening, tabulated so nothing is forgotten

A SCHEDULE is a table that pins down every opening in a project so a contractor can price and build it without guessing. A DOOR SCHEDULE lists each door by a mark or type reference and gives its size, material, operation (swing, slide, fold), glazing, finish, fire rating and the hardware set. A WINDOW SCHEDULE and VENTILATOR schedule do the same for the glazed openings. The point is completeness and coordination: if it is not in the schedule it will not be ordered, and the schedule is where the material and operation choices from Units I–III stop being ideas and become a buildable, priceable list. A drawing shows WHERE; the schedule says WHAT — together they leave no ambiguity.[1]

Where a design proves it works

The detail drawing

The head, jamb and sill details resolve the fixing, the air and water seal, the finish junction and the drainage; and the partition detail shows the floor, ceiling and wall junctions where an acoustic rating is won or lost.[3, 4]

Each junction answers a question: how it is held, how it stays dry, where water goes. Slope the sill outward, or the opening becomes a gutter into the wall.

The detail resolves the junction

The DETAIL DRAWING draws an opening at large scale where it meets the wall — at the HEAD (top), the JAMB (side) and the SILL (bottom) — to show what a plan cannot: the frame, how it is fixed to the wall, the seal against air and water, the junction of the finishes, and how weather and sound are kept out at each edge. The sill in particular has to shed water outward and stop it tracking back in; the head has to carry or clear the load above; the jamb has to fix true and seal. A good detail is where a designer proves the opening actually works — not just that it looks right in elevation, but that it assembles, seals, drains and finishes cleanly at every edge.[3]

Study task

Take a small commercial space — a shop, a clinic, a café — and build a short DOOR SCHEDULE for it: give each door a mark keyed to a rough plan, and a row with its size, material, operation, finish, fire rating and a hardware-set reference. Then pick one opening and sketch its head, jamb and sill in words: what fixes the frame, what seals it against air and water, how the sill sheds water, and how the finishes meet. Finally, name one junction of a partition where you would take special care to keep its acoustic rating. Turning your earlier material and operation choices into a complete, coordinated schedule and a resolved detail — not a pretty elevation — is what this unit is teaching.
