
Wall Finishes — Paints & Plasters
Emulsion is not waterproof, intumescent is a rated system, and POP is not gypsum board
The finishes that dress a wall are wrapped in folklore, and this unit tells it straight. A paint is a system — binder, pigment, vehicle, additives — chosen for a surface and an exposure, not a colour off a card. The special paints are graded for what they really do: intumescent is a rated system, luminous marks an escape route, bituminous damp-proofs a foundation. And the myths that cost money are named: emulsion is water-resistant, not waterproof; the primer decides the job; and POP is not gypsum board.

Paints, told straight
Know what paint is, and grade the claims: emulsion is water-resistant not waterproof, intumescent is a rated system not a magic spray, and the primer matters more than the brand.[1, 2, 3]
Binder, pigment, vehicle, additives
A paint is four things doing four jobs: a BINDER (the resin) that forms the film and sticks it down; PIGMENT for colour and opacity; a VEHICLE (water or solvent) that carries it on and then leaves; and ADDITIVES for flow, mould resistance and the rest. Two families follow from the vehicle: WATER-BASED (emulsion — low odour, quick, the interior default) and SOLVENT-BASED (enamel, PU — harder and glossier, but higher VOC and stronger smell). Knowing this frame lets you read past the brand: the binder decides toughness and adhesion, the sheen decides how much it forgives a wall and how well it cleans, and the vehicle decides odour, VOC and drying. A paint is a system chosen for a surface and an exposure, not a colour picked off a card.[1]

Choose the duty — an interior wall, a wet bathroom, an exterior, a metal trim, fire protection — and see the finishes that suit it, each with its honest note. The recurring lesson: match the binder to the surface and the exposure.

Distemper
Water-based (chalk + glue/oil binder)
Use: Budget interior walls and ceilings
The cheapest interior finish, and it shows: dry distemper powders off and does not wash. Oil-bound distemper is a step up. Fine for a low-budget ceiling; not for a wall that gets touched.
Cement paint
Cement + pigment (water-mixed)
Use: Exterior masonry, compound walls, budget facades
Bonds to raw cement and masonry and breathes, so it suits an exterior render — but it is coarse, chalks over time and is being displaced by exterior acrylic emulsion.
Plastic / acrylic emulsion (interior)
Water-based acrylic/vinyl
Use: The default interior wall finish
The everyday interior paint: low odour, quick-drying, wipeable. But 'washable' means you can WIPE it, not that it is waterproof — interior emulsion does not survive a wet area. Choose the sheen for the wear (matt hides, satin cleans).
Exterior emulsion
Water-based acrylic (elastomeric options)
Use: Exterior walls and facades
Weather- and UV-resistant, and the elastomeric grades bridge hairline cracks. Water-RESISTANT and rain-shedding — but 'weatherproof' is not the same as a waterproofing membrane; it protects a wall, it does not tank one.
Enamel (alkyd/oil)
Solvent-based alkyd
Use: Doors, windows, grilles, trim, joinery
The hard, washable, high-gloss finish for wood and metal trim. Solvent-based, so higher VOC and a strong smell, and it yellows over time — water-based enamels now offer a lower-odour alternative.
Polyurethane (PU)
Two-pack polyurethane
Use: Premium wood finishing, furniture, doors
The tough, water- and scratch-resistant clear or pigmented finish for fine joinery. Two-pack PU is very durable but needs skilled spray application and good ventilation — a workshop finish, not a brush-and-go.
Epoxy
Two-pack epoxy
Use: Industrial floors, labs, wet and hygienic areas
Chemically tough, seamless and washable — the finish for a floor or a surface that must be hygienic and water-resistant. Rigid and can yellow in UV, so it is an interior/industrial, not a facade, finish.
Intumescent (fire-protective)
Reactive coating
Use: Fire protection of structural steel
NOT a magic fire spray. It is a RATED system: on heating it swells into an insulating char, and it must be applied at a specified dry-film thickness to deliver a stated fire-resistance period (e.g. 30/60/90/120 min). Specify the rating and the thickness, or it means nothing.
Bituminous paint
Bitumen in solvent
Use: Damp-proofing, anti-corrosion (hidden)
A DAMP-PROOFER and anti-corrosion coating, not a decorative finish — it is black, hidden, and used on foundations, tanks and buried steel. Never a wall colour; a common exam trap.
Luminous / photoluminescent
Phosphorescent pigment coating
Use: Escape-route and safety marking
Charges under light and glows in the dark for a LIMITED time — genuinely useful for marking an escape route in a power cut, useless as room lighting. A safety coating, not a decorative one.
Cost bands are relative (₹ economy → ₹₹₹₹ premium), not prices. Recurring lesson: ‘washable’ emulsion is water-RESISTANT not waterproof; intumescent is a RATED system; bituminous is a damp-proofer, not a finish.
Plasters, sealants & cladding
POP (a wet-applied plaster) is not gypsum board (a manufactured panel); one sealant does not fit all; and wet cladding is bedded while dry cladding is mechanically fixed on a ventilated frame.[6, 7]
A wet plaster is not a manufactured panel
A common and costly confusion: POP and gypsum board are NOT the same thing, though they share a base chemistry — gypsum is calcium sulphate DI-hydrate, and heating (calcining) it drives off water to make plaster of Paris, the HEMI-hydrate, which re-sets when you add water back. POP (plaster of Paris) is a WET-APPLIED plaster — mixed on site and troweled or cast — used for cornices, mouldings and false ceilings; it is heavier, sets in minutes, and is more prone to cracking over large flat spans and to damage from damp. GYPSUM BOARD (plasterboard) is a MANUFACTURED PANEL — a gypsum core faced with paper — that is screwed to a frame; it is dimensionally stable, faster and cleaner to install, and the basis of modern dry partitions and ceilings. Both differ again from the base PLASTERS: gypsum PLASTER gives a smooth, low-shrinkage, no-curing interior base coat — but it is INTERIOR-ONLY and must not go in wet areas or on external walls, where CEMENT plaster (which needs water curing and can shrink-crack, but tolerates wet and weather) is the correct choice. So 'gypsum plaster is always better than cement' is itself a half-truth — each wins in its domain. Specify by name and know the difference.[6]

Study task
Write a short finishes schedule for a real small space — a shop, a clinic, a café — room by room. For each surface name the finish (with its type and sheen), the surface preparation and primer it needs, and one line on why that finish suits the surface and its exposure — and where a wet area is involved, say why emulsion would fail and what you would use instead. Then name one sealant for a wet joint and one for a moving joint, and say why they differ. Choosing the finish, the prep and the sealant for the surface and exposure — not defaulting to one paint everywhere — is the specification skill this unit builds.
