Beam Visualiser
See how a simply-supported beam works. Set the span, a distributed load and a point load, and a section, then watch the reactions, shear force and bending moment diagrams, deflected shape and bending stress update live.
A teaching model of a simply-supported beam. Shear and moment are exact; deflection integrates M/EI numerically, so it stays correct for a UDL and an off-centre point load together. It is a concept tool — confirm any real design with a structural engineer to the relevant IS codes.
How it works
Add a uniformly distributed load and a point load, then read the reactions, the shear force diagram and the bending moment diagram — the two curves every structures course lives on.
Choose a rectangular section and material; the tool computes the maximum deflection (by integrating M/EI), the bending stress, and the span-to-deflection ratio against the usual L/250 limit.
Watch the diagrams change as you drag a load across the span or deepen the beam. It is a concept tool — real design must be confirmed by a structural engineer to the relevant IS codes.

From mushroom-brick towers to bacteria-cemented blocks and speculative dwellings grown from living cells, a cluster of experiments asks a genuinely new question: what if we stopped mining and manufacturing our buildings and started farming them instead?
