Beam Angle Calculator
How wide a pool of light will a spotlight or downlight throw? Enter the distance to the surface and the beam angle to see the diameter it lights — the way to pick narrow for accent or wide for a wash.
Fixture to the lit surface — e.g. ceiling height minus the table or artwork height.
at 8 ft throw, 36 deg beam.
A narrow beam makes a tight, bright pool (great for art and drama); a wide beam spreads soft light for ambient fill. Overlap pools slightly for an even wash, and mind the throw — a taller ceiling wants a narrower beam to keep the light punchy.
Indicative only. The quoted "beam angle" is where the light drops to half its centre brightness — the softer "field" edge spreads wider, and reflectors vary. Use this to compare options, and pair it with lumens (a wide beam spreads the same light thinner). Pick the fixture in the recessed & downlight guide.
