Bathroom Door Material Selector

Tell us the exposure, budget, look and ventilation of your wet area and we rank the best waterproof door — PVC, WPC, FRP, marine BWP ply or aluminium — with a reason, an indicative ₹ band and care tips. Indicative India 2026; prices vary by city and vendor.

Scores are 0–10 from real wet-area behaviour: WPC & FRP (IS 14856) and PVC are fully waterproof; marine/BWP plywood (IS 710) gives a true wood look when sealed; aluminium is rust-free and long-lived. Costs are ₹ per standard shutter (material + make) — frame, hardware, fitting and 18% GST extra. Indicative; confirm with a local vendor.

Not suitable for wet areas

  • Ordinary flush / ply door (IS 2202, MR grade)

Bedroom-grade flush doors use MR (moisture-resistant) glue, not BWP — they swell, delaminate and rot at the bottom rail within a year or two of bathroom splash.

  • MDF / HDF door

MDF drinks water like a sponge and bloats permanently. Never put plain MDF on a bathroom or utility opening, finish notwithstanding.

  • Membrane (PVC-pressed MDF) door

The film looks great but the MDF core underneath still swells; the membrane peels along wet edges. Keep membrane doors to dry bedrooms and wardrobes.
