The hook

A rich palette of settings dumped at random across a floor is just noise and confusion. The same settings, organised into neighbourhoods and zoned loud-to-quiet along a legible street, become a place people can read and belong to.

Suppose you have chosen a fine palette of settings - open desks, focus rooms, call booths, project rooms, lounge. Scatter them at random across the floor and you will have built chaos: a focus room next to the cafe, a phone booth marooned far from anyone who needs it, teams with no place that is theirs, a floor nobody can read or navigate. The settings are necessary but not sufficient; what turns a kit of parts into a place is organisation - the planning logic that arranges the settings so they support each other, keep loud and quiet apart, give people somewhere to belong, and add up to a floor that makes sense.

This lesson teaches that organising logic through three linked ideas. Neighbourhoods: grouping settings into team 'home-bases' so each team has a patch of the floor that is recognisably theirs, with its own mix of settings close at hand. Zoning: arranging the floor from loud to quiet so that lively and focused activities do not collide - the single most important move for making varied settings actually work. And the 'street': a legible spine of shared space that ties the neighbourhoods together, carries circulation and chance encounter, and makes the whole floor navigable. Together they answer a question that agile, shared, desk-light offices make urgent: how do people still feel they belong somewhere?

Neighbourhoods for belonging, zones for order, a street for life. That is how a kit of parts becomes a place.

Neighbourhoods - giving people a home-base

The neighbourhood is the organising unit of the modern workplace floor: a cluster of settings that belongs to a team or group, giving them a recognisable patch of the office that is theirs. Rather than dissolving everyone into one undifferentiated open sea, the floor is broken into these team home-bases, each with its own group of desks and, ideally, its own nearby mix of the settings that team uses most - a focus room or two, some booths, a team room, a bit of collaboration space. A neighbourhood is big enough to hold a team and small enough to feel human, and it has an identity: you can say 'the design team sits over there', and people know where they are and where they belong.

The reason this matters so much is belonging, and it becomes urgent precisely as offices move toward shared, agile, desk-light working. When nobody owns a desk and people move around by activity (Module 7), there is a real risk that the office feels anonymous and rootless - a hotel lobby where no one belongs anywhere. The neighbourhood is the antidote. Even without an owned desk, a person can belong to a neighbourhood: a home territory where their team gathers, where they know the people and the place, where they can leave a team's mark, store their things nearby, and feel grounded. Research and practice are consistent that people need a sense of place and belonging to feel settled and to build the team relationships the office exists for; the neighbourhood delivers that at a scale that survives desk-sharing.

Good neighbourhoods also solve practical problems. They keep a team's frequent collaborators close (the adjacency logic of Module 2 applied at small scale), put the settings a team uses most within a few steps, and let different teams have subtly different neighbourhoods suited to how they work - a noisy sales team and a heads-down research team need not be planned identically. And they give the floor a legible human grain: instead of 'desk 4,217', the office becomes a set of named, characterful places. The design task is to size neighbourhoods sensibly, give each an identity and its own close palette of settings, and make the boundaries between them clear enough to read but open enough to connect.

Zoning - keeping loud and quiet apart

If neighbourhoods give the floor its social structure, zoning gives it its acoustic and behavioural order, and it is the single most important move for making a varied palette of settings actually work. The principle is simple to state and endlessly violated: arrange the floor so that loud activities and quiet activities are kept apart, in a graded sequence from noisy to silent, rather than mixed together. A focus room beside the cafe, a silent library zone across the aisle from a buzzing collaboration area, a phone booth in the middle of a lively social hub - these are the everyday failures that make good settings useless, because the quiet ones cannot do their job next to the loud ones.

The standard and reliable pattern is a loud-to-quiet gradient across the floor. The lively, high-traffic, sociable functions - arrival and reception, the cafe or pantry, social and collaboration space, lively meeting rooms - cluster at one end, typically near the entrance where people arrive and energy is welcome. The floor then steps down through the active middle zone of open desks and team neighbourhoods, where ordinary working noise is fine, to the quiet end - focus rooms, silent or library-style areas, call booths - placed deepest in, furthest from the entrance and the buzz, where concentration is protected. People intuitively understand such a gradient: you get louder toward the front and quieter toward the back, and you moderate your own behaviour accordingly.

Between the zones sit buffers and thresholds - a band of circulation, storage, planting or lower-intensity space, or simply a real acoustic separation - so that sound and behaviour step down gradually rather than colliding at a hard edge. Crucially, zoning is partly a planning move (where things go) and partly an acoustic-design move (how sound is actually contained), and the two must work together: putting the quiet zone at the back helps, but the focus rooms still need real acoustic separation, and the open active zone still needs sound absorption and perhaps masking. That acoustic craft is important enough to get its own lesson in Module 4; here the rule is the planning one - put the loud things together near the entrance and the quiet things together deepest in, with buffers between, and never scatter quiet settings among loud ones. Zoning is the difference between a palette that works and one that merely exists on a plan.

The street, ownership and belonging in shared space

Neighbourhoods and zones still need tying together, and the most useful idea for that is the 'street' (or spine, or main concourse): a clear, legible route of shared space that runs through the floor, connecting the neighbourhoods and the shared settings and carrying the life of the office. Borrowed from urban design, the metaphor is apt. A good office, like a good town, has a main street people travel along, off which sit the neighbourhoods (the residential quarters), the shared amenities (the shops and squares - cafe, meeting rooms, focus suites), and the gathering places. The street makes the floor navigable - you can find your way, orient yourself, understand how the place is organised - and it does something subtler and valuable: it concentrates the movement that produces chance encounter, the unplanned corridor conversation that is one of the office's real reasons to exist. Put the social hub and the key shared settings along the street, and you engineer the serendipity that a scattered plan disperses.

All three ideas converge on the deepest question this module raises: how do people feel ownership and belonging in shared, agile space? As offices move away from the owned desk, belonging cannot come from 'this chair is mine' any more - and if nothing replaces it, the office feels anonymous and people disengage. The neighbourhood replaces owned-desk belonging with belonging to a place and a team; the street gives the whole floor a legible identity you can feel part of; and thoughtful touches - a neighbourhood a team can personalise and leave its mark on, good local storage for the things people need, named and characterful places rather than numbered zones, and a genuine welcome rather than a hot-desk free-for-all - turn shared space from rootless to homelike. The craft is to design shared and agile space that nonetheless feels owned and belonged-to at the level of the team and the place, not the individual desk.

Bring the three together and a floor stops being a kit of parts and becomes a place: teams with home-bases they belong to, a loud-to-quiet order that lets every setting do its job, and a legible street that connects it all and generates the encounters the office is for. That is the planning logic that makes the palette of the previous lesson actually work in the real world.

Making it work - and what to defer

Turning these ideas into a real floor takes judgement and a few disciplines. Size neighbourhoods to real teams and give each its own close palette and a touch of identity, but keep boundaries open enough to connect. Commit to the loud-to-quiet gradient early, because it shapes the whole plan - decide where the noisy front and quiet back are before placing settings, not after. Make the street legible and active - a clear route with the shared settings and social hub along it - and use wayfinding so people can read the floor. And design for belonging in shared space deliberately: personalisable neighbourhoods, good local storage, named places, a culture that lets people settle. Close the loop with measurement and post-occupancy review (Modules 1 and 10), because the right neighbourhood sizes and zone balance only become clear once real people use the floor.

And, as throughout, design the principles with confidence but defer the binding specifics. The street is not only a nice idea - it is also a means of escape, so its width, layout and the travel distances along it are governed by fire egress and occupant-load rules and must be verified with the current code and the fire/life-safety specialist, never set by the metaphor alone. Accessibility runs through all of it: the street and every neighbourhood and setting must be reachable and usable by everyone, to the dimensions of the current accessibility standards and an accessibility consultant. The acoustic separation that zoning relies on has measurable requirements that belong to the acoustic specialist (Module 4). And the neighbourhood sizes, zone proportions and densities are illustrative benchmarks to calibrate with real data, not rules.

So organise the floor boldly: neighbourhoods for belonging, zoning for order, a street for legibility and encounter, and deliberate design for ownership of shared space. But let the codes and specialists set the egress, the accessibility dimensions and the acoustic performance, and let real occupancy data tune the sizes. Do that, and the palette of settings becomes a genuine place - one that people can read, use well, and feel they belong to, even when nobody owns a desk. That is the quiet achievement that closes this module on where the work happens.

This workshop takes the palette from the previous lesson and organises it into a real floor. You will zone loud-to-quiet, lay out team neighbourhoods and run a legible street through it - then mark what you must defer.
