Working Drawings & Detailing
The construction-documentation course — the bridge from a design to the drawings and words a builder actually builds from — and it is strict about the difference between a pretty picture and a buildable document. Its first correction is the whole spirit of the course: a working drawing is an INSTRUCTION to build, not a picture. A presentation render exists to persuade a client; a working drawing must be unambiguous, to scale, fully dimensioned and annotated so that a stranger who never met the designer can build the space correctly. From that follows the golden rule of every construction drawing, the one every professional repeats: NEVER scale a measurement off the drawing — read the written, figured DIMENSION — because prints stretch, shrink and photocopy at the wrong size, which is exactly why real sheets are stamped 'do not scale'. It teaches drawing as a shared LANGUAGE of line weights and symbols — heavy lines for what is cut, dashed for what is hidden, chain lines for centre-lines, hatching patterns for materials — codified in India by IS 962, the code of practice for architectural and building drawings, so that a drawing which ignores the conventions simply cannot be read by the people who must build it. It sets out the rules of dimensioning: dimension to centre-lines or a consistent face, make the string of dimensions add up to the overall, and never dimension the same thing twice, because over-dimensioning is not thoroughness but a way of planting two conflicting instructions that will eventually disagree. It shows the drawing set as a CROSS-REFERENCED system rather than a pile of loose sheets — section marks, detail bubbles and elevation tags linking the sheets, each detail drawn once at large scale and referenced everywhere it occurs, and every element consistent across plan, elevation, section and schedule, so a door that is nine hundred on the plan is nine hundred on the elevation and in the schedule. It uses SCHEDULES to tabulate repetition, keying doors, windows and finishes by type so the information lives in one place instead of being scattered as notes. It insists that each SERVICE gets its own layout — flooring, the reflected ceiling plan, electrical, plumbing, lighting and fire — because one sheet cannot carry them all legibly, and it explains why the reflected ceiling plan is drawn looking down as if the floor were a mirror rather than as an ordinary plan. And it ends on SPECIFICATIONS: the words that complete the drawings, because a drawing can show geometry, quantity and location but not quality — the grade, the standard, the test, the workmanship — so the specification states the quality clause by clause, the mode of measurement (IS 1200) defines how the quantities are measured for cost, and drawings and specifications together, not either alone, form the contract that gets a design built. Throughout, documentation is treated as the discipline that decides whether a good design survives the journey to a finished space, and the shortcuts that ruin it are named plainly.
