Neuroarchitecture & Design for the Brain
How the built environment affects the brain, mind and body, and how to design with that in mind — the building and the brain (space shapes the mind; what neuroarchitecture is; the landscape; the promise separated from the evidence), why the brain matters in design (we shape buildings and they shape us, the cost of bad space, evidence-based design), how the brain reads space (perception and the senses, attention and cognition, emotion and the feeling brain, memory and wayfinding), stress/restoration/nature (stress and the built environment, biophilia and nature, restorative environments, light and circadian rhythm), the senses (sight, sound, touch/materials/thermal, smell/air), space/form/feeling (scale/proportion/enclosure, complexity/order/beauty, colour and mood, movement and the body), designing for people and places (homes, workplaces, learning, healing), special brains and inclusion (neurodiversity, ageing and dementia, children, trauma-informed design), the evidence and the method (the science and its limits, measuring the effect, from evidence to design, working with research), reality/limits/honesty (neuro-washing, correlation and context, determinism and difference, when we don't know), and practice and the future. Rigorous and honest — space genuinely shapes the mind and the field is increasingly evidence-based, but the science is young and messy, much evidence is correlational and context-dependent, neuro-washing is rampant, people and cultures differ, and space influences rather than dictates — for architects, interior designers and students. This is design education, not medicine: it defers any clinical, medical, psychological or health-outcome claim and any safety, accessibility or therapeutic-design determination to qualified health, clinical and research professionals, peer-reviewed evidence and the governing codes and standards (NBC India, accessibility standards), treating studies and effects as illustrative and often preliminary. India-aware, honouring a rich traditional architecture of wellbeing (courtyards, jaali light, thresholds) while cautious that the research base is Western-heavy and culture shapes how space is experienced.

Module 0 · The Building and the Brain0.1 · Space Shapes the Mind
A building does not just shelter people; it continuously acts on the brain and body of everyone inside - stress, attention, mood, healing - mostly below awareness. Neuroarchitecture studies this with science and designs for it.

The through-line- 1Why the Brain Matters in Design. The case, weighed honestly: we shape buildings and they shape us, the cost of bad space, evidence-based design, and the honest caveats.
- 2How the Brain Reads Space. The mechanisms: perception and the senses, attention and cognition, emotion and the feeling brain, and memory and wayfinding.
- 3Stress, Restoration & Nature. The best-evidenced effects: stress and the built environment, biophilia and nature, restorative environments, and light and circadian rhythm.
- 4The Senses. The body's channels: sight and visual comfort, sound and acoustics, touch, materials and thermal, and smell, air and the whole body.
