Smell, Air & the Whole Body
These are the channels design respects least and yet which reach in remarkably deep - smell with its uncanny direct line to memory and emotion, the air itself with its real and underrated effect on health and clear thinking, and behind them the easily-forgotten truth that a space is experienced by the whole body and every sense at once, never by a pair of eyes looking at a rendering
A rendering can't be smelled, breathed or felt - which is exactly why the senses it leaves out are the ones design forgets, and the body never does.
We have taken the senses roughly in order of how much design usually respects them - sight most, then sound, then touch and temperature. This last lesson is about the channels design respects least of all, and yet which reach, in their own ways, remarkably deep: smell, with its uncanny, direct line to memory and emotion; the air itself, whose quality has a real and underrated effect on health and on the ability to think clearly; and, standing behind all of them, the plain but easily-forgotten truth that a space is experienced by the whole body, all the senses at once, not by a pair of eyes looking at a rendering.
These are the overlooked channels, and each carries a genuine lesson. Smell is the most emotionally direct of all the senses and the most tied to memory and place, yet it is almost never consciously designed. Air quality - fresh air, ventilation, the absence of pollutants and stuffiness - affects comfort, alertness and health more than most people realise, and stale, poorly-ventilated indoor air is one of the commonest and least-noticed drains on wellbeing, a matter of special seriousness in India's air-quality context. And the deepest point of the whole module is the simplest: to design well for the brain, you must remember that people inhabit spaces with their entire bodies and every sense, continuously and mostly below awareness - the eye is only ever part of the story.
Overlooked channels reach deep. SMELL: direct line to emotion + memory; mostly REMOVE bad (ventilate, damp, low-emission, breathe); scent = cautious. AIR: underrated; stale/high-CO2 -> dull thinking; pollutants matter; India tension - 'open window' can let pollution in. Smell reaches straight into memory and emotion - mostly, remove the bad
Smell is the strangest and most emotionally direct of the senses, and its neglect in design is a genuine missed opportunity - handled thoughtlessly it quietly wrecks a space, handled well it can anchor a place in memory and feeling in a way nothing visual can match. Anatomically, smell has an unusually direct route into the parts of the brain most bound up with emotion and memory, which is the everyday reason a single scent - rain on hot earth, a particular flower, incense, a grandparent's kitchen, an old book, a hospital corridor - can summon a vivid memory and a wave of feeling instantly and involuntarily, faster and more emotionally than a picture or a word. Smell bypasses the slow, deliberate mind and speaks straight to feeling and recollection.
For a designer this cuts both ways. The negative is the more urgent: bad smells - damp, mould, drains, stale air, cooking odours trapped and stagnant, off-gassing from new synthetic materials and finishes, the sour smell of a space that cannot breathe - powerfully and immediately mark a space as unpleasant, unhealthy or uncared-for, and no amount of visual polish overcomes them. Much of good 'smell design' is therefore not adding pleasant scents but removing bad ones: good ventilation, controlling damp, managing cooking and waste, choosing low-odour, low-emission materials, and simply letting spaces breathe. The positive side - the calming, place-making power of good natural smells (a garden, rain, timber, flowers, clean fresh air) - is real and worth designing for, largely by bringing in nature, natural materials and fresh air rather than by masking with artificial fragrance.
Here the humility must be firm, because scent is a favourite playground for neuro-washing and overclaiming. Confident assertions that a particular scent 'reduces stress by X percent' or 'boosts productivity' run well ahead of solid evidence; responses to smell are intensely personal and cultural (a scent that soothes one person cloys or repels another, and scent meanings differ sharply across cultures); and artificial fragrance can trigger discomfort, headaches or sensitivity in some people, so pumping scent into shared spaces is not a harmless wellness move. The honest, low-risk position: prioritise clean, fresh, well-ventilated air and the natural smells that come with nature and good materials; be very cautious and inclusive about deliberate artificial scenting; and leave any health or clinical claim about aromatherapy or scent to real evidence and qualified professionals.

Indoor air quality - underrated, and real for health and thinking
Behind smell sits the plainer and, for health, more important matter of the air itself - and indoor air quality is one of the most underrated wellbeing factors in the built environment, precisely because good air is invisible and bad air is often noticed only as a vague stuffiness, sleepiness or headache rather than correctly identified. People in cities spend the overwhelming majority of their lives indoors, so the quality of indoor air is, for most of us, the quality of most of the air we ever breathe - and it is shaped directly by how a building is designed and ventilated.
Two things matter. The first is fresh air and ventilation. When a space is poorly ventilated and full of people, carbon dioxide and other products of occupancy build up, and stale, high-CO2 air is increasingly associated in the research with reduced alertness and impaired concentration and decision-making - the stuffy, sleepy, cannot-think feeling of a crowded, closed room is not imagination. Fresh air genuinely matters for the mind's work, not just for comfort. The second is pollutants: indoor air can carry volatile compounds off-gassed from paints, adhesives, furniture and synthetic finishes, combustion products from cooking and heating, dust, damp and mould, and - crucially in the Indian context - infiltrating outdoor pollution, which in many Indian cities is severe for large parts of the year. This creates a real design tension unique to such settings: the instinct to 'open a window for fresh air' can mean letting polluted outdoor air in, so ventilation strategy, filtration and material choice have to be thought about together and seriously.
The design responses are clear in direction: ventilate well (harnessing passive, climate-responsive strategies - courtyards, cross-ventilation, stack effect, the intelligence of traditional Indian building - alongside mechanical systems and filtration where outdoor air is poor); choose low-emission, low-VOC materials and finishes to cut pollutants at source; control damp and mould; and bring in plants and nature, which support the sense of fresh, living air (while being honest that the air-purifying power of a few houseplants is often wildly overstated). And the binding line is unambiguous: ventilation rates, air-quality parameters and the technical criteria are set by the National Building Code of India, the relevant air-quality and ventilation standards, and qualified services and environmental engineers, and every health claim about air and its effects belongs to the health literature and professionals - never to a designer's confident assertion. A space is experienced by the whole body and every sense at once
Step back from the individual senses and the deepest point of the whole module comes into view: a person experiences a space with the entire body and all the senses at once, continuously and mostly below awareness - never as a pair of eyes looking at a picture. This sounds obvious, yet it is routinely forgotten, because design is so heavily mediated by the visual: we conceive, draw, render, photograph, publish and judge buildings as images, and a rendering shows only what a place looks like from one flattering angle in perfect light and total silence. It cannot convey how the space sounds, smells, feels underfoot and on the skin, how the air moves, how warm or cool it is, how it changes through the day and the seasons - all the things the body will actually register when it is there. A building can be a triumph as an image and a quiet misery to inhabit.
This is the idea of multisensory experience and, more deeply, of embodied experience: the senses do not work in isolation but combine into a single felt impression of a place, and that impression is bound up with the body's movement, comfort and physical state, not just the eye's report. The great, resonant spaces of the world - a courtyard house, a temple, a bazaar, a mountain monastery - work not because they photograph well but because they orchestrate every sense together: light and shade, sound and quiet, cool air and warm stone, the smell of rain or incense or timber, the feel of the ground and the changing of the light. Traditional Indian architecture, tuned by climate and culture over centuries, is profoundly multisensory in exactly this way - a richness a purely visual, image-driven modern practice is prone to strip out without noticing.
For the designer, the discipline is to design for, and to imagine, the whole embodied experience - to ask not only 'how will this look?' but 'how will this sound, smell, feel; how warm will it be; how will it change through the day; what will it be like to move through and to be in with the whole body?' - and to test designs against that fuller question rather than the seductive single image. Held with the course's usual humility (people and cultures differ in how they weight and read the senses, and much of the science of multisensory experience is young and messy), this is perhaps the most practical and important habit the module teaches: remember the whole body, and you will design spaces that are good to be in, not just good to look at.
Putting it together - and knowing the limits
This lesson, and the module it closes, comes down to a single corrective: broaden design attention from the eye to the whole sensing body. Smell, though almost never designed, reaches straight into memory and emotion, so protect spaces from bad smells and let them breathe before ever reaching for added fragrance. Air quality, invisible and underrated, genuinely affects health, alertness and thought, so design hard for fresh, clean, well-ventilated air - a matter of particular seriousness in India's pollution context. And beneath it all, a space is experienced by the whole body and every sense together, continuously and below awareness - never by an eye looking at a rendering.
The practical programme: prioritise clean, fresh air and good ventilation as a first-order design concern, using passive climate-responsive strategies alongside mechanical systems and filtration where outdoor air is poor; cut pollutants at source through low-emission materials and control of damp; remove the causes of bad smell rather than masking them, and be cautious and inclusive about deliberate scenting; bring in nature, natural materials and daylight, which serve several senses at once; and, above all, design for and imagine the full multisensory, embodied experience of a place, testing your work against how it will actually be to inhabit rather than how it will photograph. And the honest limits hold to the end. People and cultures differ in how they read and weight the senses, and much of the science of smell, air and multisensory experience is young, uneven and easily overstated, so design for the specific people and place and treat confident sensory claims - especially about scent - with skepticism. And defer the binding results without exception: ventilation and air-quality criteria to the National Building Code of India, the relevant standards and qualified services and environmental engineers; and every health, clinical or therapeutic claim about air, smell or the senses to the health literature and qualified professionals.
