Everyone knows the particular unease of being lost in a building - the airport, the hospital, the sprawling office or mall where every corridor looks like the last, the signs contradict each other, and you cannot tell whether you have been here before or whether you are getting closer to where you need to be. It is a small everyday misery, and we usually blame ourselves - a poor sense of direction, not paying attention. But far more often the fault is the building's. Your brain is running a remarkable, constant, mostly unconscious process - building and updating a mental map of where you are, where things are, and how to get from here to there - and a confusing building is one that gives that map-making machinery nothing to work with, so it labours, fails, and floods you with the low stress of disorientation.
That machinery is worth respecting. Humans are natural navigators; the brain devotes real resources to spatial memory and to knitting together a cognitive map of the environment, because finding your way - to food, to shelter, home again - was survival.
