Design Thesis
The crowning project of the whole degree. The design thesis is an independent, research-grounded interior design project of your own choice, developed under an approved guide, that consolidates and applies everything the eight semesters taught. This course is a method for it — not a set of lectures. It begins with what a thesis really is, and the honest truth that it is not just a bigger studio project but an independent, research-driven demonstration that you can define a problem, investigate it and resolve it, judged on your reasoning as much as your design. It teaches how to choose and frame the thesis — a real, researchable issue rather than a grand or glamorous one, at a scale your knowledge can actually resolve, because a well-resolved smaller thesis beats an unresolved large one, with the guide steering while you drive. It teaches research that DRIVES the design — systematic literature, case studies and site and user study, analysed and turned into design parameters, and conducted with honest data and full credit. It teaches design development and detailing — a concept that serves the researched brief, developed through iteration, integrating everything from space planning and structure and services to codes, ergonomics, materials, sustainability and cost, designed in relationship to its surroundings with a pragmatic and vernacular sensibility, and resolved down to the construction detail through the professional method. And it teaches the presentation, the report in the specified format, the original drawings, and the viva-voce before a jury of an external and an internal examiner and the head of department — where a render persuades but the reasoning is what is examined, and where you defend your decisions and own your limitations honestly. Through all of it runs the one line the whole programme has held, now made personal: academic integrity — original work, honest citation, no invented data — the honesty that is the foundation a thesis stands on.
