Concept to a resolved, integrated, detailed design

Now the design. This unit develops the thesis from a concept that serves the researched brief, through iteration, into one integrated design that responds to its surroundings — and resolves it down to the buildable detail through the professional method.

Concept, iteration & integration

Begin with a concept that answers the brief and parameters, and refine it through iteration (the evidence of rigour). A mature design is integrated — plan, structure, services, codes, cost and sustainability as one buildable whole — and designed in context, pragmatic and rooted.[2, 3]

Problem first, refined in loops

Design development begins with a CONCEPT that answers the researched brief and the design parameters — the organising idea of the project — not a shape chosen first and justified later. A concept that serves the brief holds the whole thesis together and gives every later decision a reason. From there the design grows through ITERATION: options generated, tested against the parameters and the context, reviewed with the guide, and refined — loops, not a straight march to a final drawing. The iterations are not wasted; they are the EVIDENCE of rigour, and showing them (the alternatives tried, why one was chosen) strengthens the thesis and the defence. A design that leaps to a single answer with no testing usually has a weaker answer.[1, 4]

Detailing is not drafting after the design — it IS design, and it is where the thesis proves it is buildable. Resolve the junctions and build-ups, and communicate the design through the professional method — coordinated working drawings and specifications a stranger could build from.[1, 4]

Where it becomes buildable

DETAILING is not drafting done after the design is 'finished' — it IS design, and it is where a thesis proves it is buildable and considered. Resolving the CONSTRUCTION DETAILS — the junctions, the build-ups, the materials and fixings, how the thing is actually made — tests and improves the whole design, because a junction that cannot be built means a design that cannot be built. A thesis that stays schematic, all concept and no resolution, is an unfinished thesis. Working the details down — the resolved section, the worked junction, the material and finish decisions — is where the design becomes real, and it is one of the thesis's explicit learning outcomes.[1, 4]

Write your thesis concept in two sentences that answer the brief and parameters — not a shape, an idea. List three iterations you would test it through and what each would check against the parameters. Then make an integration checklist: name how the design would satisfy planning, structure, services, codes, cost and sustainability together, and one way it responds to its context. Finally, choose one junction or build-up your thesis would have to detail, and note why resolving it proves the design is buildable. The goal is to see the design as one integrated, detailed, defensible whole.
