Research that drives the design — and turns into parameters

Research is the engine of a thesis, not an appendix. This unit shows how research comes first and drives the design — systematic literature, analysed case studies and site and user study — how its analysis turns into design parameters the design must meet, and how to conduct it all with integrity.

Inquiry, not decoration

Research that drives design

Systematic research means you know what you looked at and why, and it changes the design, because the design answers what the research found. Analyse case studies for what works and why (learn from, don’t copy), and study the real site and users — the raw material of a responsive design.[1, 2]

The engine, not the appendix

RESEARCH is the engine of a thesis, and the honest rule is that it comes FIRST and DRIVES the design — it is not a literature review bolted on at the end to justify a scheme already made. Systematic research means you know WHAT you looked at and WHY: relevant LITERATURE (what is already known about your problem, users and space type), CASE STUDIES (built precedents, analysed), and primary study of the SITE and USERS. It is systematic, so it is honest and repeatable, and it CHANGES the design, because the design exists to answer what the research found. A thesis whose design would be identical with or without its research has not really done research — and a good jury can tell.[1, 2]

Analysis must produce design parameters — the requirements, constraints and targets the design must meet — the hinge that makes the design a reasoned answer, not a guess. And it must be honest: never invent or bend a finding, get consent when studying people, and credit every source.[1, 4]

The bridge to design

Analysis is not the end of research; it must produce DESIGN PARAMETERS — the concrete requirements, constraints, targets and priorities the design has to meet. If the research found that a ward's patients are disoriented, a parameter might be 'every bed has a view to a window and a clear sightline to the nurse station'; if it found overheating, a parameter might be a shading and ventilation target. Parameters are the HINGE that turns evidence into design: they let you say the design is a reasoned answer to what you found, not a guess, and they give you something to test the design AGAINST as it develops. Deriving sensible, evidence-based parameters from your analysis is one of the most important intellectual moves in the whole thesis.[1, 4]

Case study / precedent

Study task

For your framed thesis, plan the research. List three questions the research must answer, and for each name a source: a piece of literature, a case study to analyse, or a site/user study to run. For one case study, write two lines of real analysis — what it solved, and what you would do differently. Then convert one finding into a concrete design parameter the design will be tested against. Finally, note one ethics point that applies (consent, privacy or citation). The goal is to make the research drive the design, not decorate it.
