From a topic to a sharp question, a brief and a feasible scope

A topic is not yet a thesis. This unit turns one into a project you can commit to: sharpening a real design question, weighing ambition against a scale you can resolve, writing the brief and programme, studying the site and context, and testing feasibility before you begin.

The question & the scale

Sharpen a subject into a question that names the problem, the users and the context — something to answer, not merely to depict. Then calibrate ambition against a scale you can fully resolve: be bold in the question and the quality of thinking, realistic in the size.[1, 4]

From a topic to an issue

A topic is not yet a thesis; a thesis needs a QUESTION or ISSUE. Sharpening 'I want to design a school' into 'How can an interior support learning for neurodiverse children in an Indian government school?' turns a subject into an investigation. A good thesis question is specific, researchable and resolvable through design; it names the problem, the users and the context, and it gives you something to answer rather than merely something to depict. This is also where you meet the brief's idea of the (future) CLIENT: designing for a real or plausible client and their needs, not for yourself. The sharper the question, the more the research, the design and the defence all point the same way — and the stronger the thesis.[1, 2]

What the project must do

The BRIEF states what the project must achieve — its purpose, its users and their needs, and the outcomes it must deliver — and the PROGRAMME translates that into the spaces, their areas, activities and ADJACENCIES. For a thesis you largely WRITE the brief yourself (informed by research), which is both a freedom and a responsibility: an honest, well-argued brief is the backbone the whole thesis hangs on. A vague brief produces a vague thesis; a precise, researched brief — who is this for, what must it do, to what standard — gives the design something firm to answer and the jury something concrete to judge it against. Building the brief and programme carefully is not paperwork before the 'real' design; it is a large part of the design thinking itself.[1, 4]

Brief

The statement of what the project must achieve — purpose, users, needs and outcomes — largely written by the student for a thesis, and the backbone of it.

Programme

The brief translated into spaces, areas, activities and adjacencies — the organised requirements the design resolves.

The study of the location, climate, surroundings, constraints and opportunities the design must respond to.

Take the area you chose in Unit I and frame it fully. Write the thesis question in one clear sentence that names the problem, the users and the context. Sketch a one-page brief (purpose, users, key needs, outcomes) and a rough programme (the main spaces and their adjacencies). Note the kind of site and context it needs and one thing the context could give the design. Finally, run a quick feasibility check against four tests — buildable, lawful, a real need, resolvable in the time — and decide honestly whether to commit or re-scope. The goal is to convert an idea into a project you could actually finish and defend.
