Circular Design & Material Passports
The circular economy for the built environment — the end of take-make-waste (the building as a material bank), circular-economy foundations (what it is, the R-ladder, technical and biological cycles, why recycling is not circularity), circular design strategies (build less/long, adaptability, design for disassembly, layers and reversibility), materials in a circular world (reused, recycled, bio-based), reuse and the existing building (audits, deconstruction, structural reuse), material passports (what they are, what goes in them, standards, buildings as material banks), measuring circularity (indicators, circularity vs carbon, provenance, targets), the circular supply chain (reuse markets, logistics, product-as-service, procurement), codes/value/barriers (approval for reuse, the business case, insurance and liability), reality/limits/honesty (circular-washing, when circular is not better, scale and policy, justice and the informal recyclers), and practice and the future. Rigorous and honest — circularity is largely aspirational, recycling is not circularity, and much circular claim is greenwash — for architects, interior designers and students. Defers structural reuse certification, code approval, warranties, insurance and contracts to qualified engineers, the governing codes (NBC India), certified testing and legal/insurance professionals, treating rates and costs as illustrative.
