The Designer's Circular Role

Circularity is won or lost on the drawing board, long before a demolition contractor arrives - and the decisions that decide it are yours to make, coordinate and defend against greenwash

By the time a demolition crew arrives, the circular decisions were already made - years earlier, by whoever drew the building. That is you.

It is tempting to think circularity is someone else's job - the demolition contractor who might salvage, the recycler who might process the rubble, the policy-maker who might mandate it, the manufacturer who might take a product back. All of them matter. But by the time a building reaches any of them, the decisive choices have already been locked in, and they were made by the designer. Whether a building is reused or demolished, whether its beam is bolted or cast into a monolith, whether its materials were ever written down - these are drawing-board decisions, and they are largely irreversible once the concrete sets.

That is the uncomfortable, empowering truth of this lesson: the designer holds the largest circular levers of anyone in the chain, and holds them earliest, when they are cheapest to pull. Your leverage is highest at the brief and the concept, and it drains away with every drawing you finalise. This lesson maps exactly where that leverage lives - the early decisions, the coordination of the team, and the honest voice against greenwash - and, just as important, where it stops: the binding questions of safe reuse, code and liability that belong to engineers, the codes and specialists. Knowing the boundary is not a limitation. It is what lets you push hard on what is genuinely yours.

The early decisions

Almost everything that determines whether a building becomes a material bank or a future pile of rubble is settled in the first fraction of a project, on decisions that later stages can only execute, not undo. There is a well-known relationship in design that circular practice makes vivid: your ability to influence a building's outcomes is highest at the very start and falls steeply as the project proceeds, while the cost of making a change rises just as steeply. The biggest circular moves are therefore the cheapest to make, and you make them first - which is exactly why they are so often missed, because they must be made before anyone feels the pressure of them.

Four early decisions carry most of the weight. The first is whether to build at all, or to reuse what already stands - the single largest circular choice, because the greenest, most circular material is the one already in place, already carrying its embodied effort. The second is whether to design for disassembly: choosing connections that can be undone (bolted, screwed, clipped) over those that cannot (welded, cast, glued), keeping materials separable rather than bonded into composites, and organising the building in independent layers. The third is what to build with: specifying materials chosen partly on their recoverability - reused and reclaimed first, then recoverable-when-new, with bonded and un-recyclable composites treated as a last resort. The fourth is whether the building's materials get documented at all - whether you commission a material passport so that, one day, someone can find and recover what you put in.

None of these is a bolt-on. Each shapes the plan, the structure, the details and the specification from the first sketch, and each becomes prohibitively expensive to introduce later. A building conceived as a demolish-and-discard object cannot be quietly made circular in the tender drawings; a building conceived as a material bank is circular in its bones. This is why the designer's role is not to add circularity at the end but to hold it from the beginning - to treat 'how does this come apart, and how is it recorded?' as a first-order design question alongside how it looks, performs and costs. The leverage is real, but it is perishable: it is spent, or wasted, in the earliest rooms.

Your influence starts high and drains away. Spend it early: reuse? disassembly? recoverable materials? a passport? Ask before the concrete sets.

Yours vs deferred

What is genuinely yours - and what you must defer

A designer who is honest about circularity is precise about the boundary between design judgement and binding technical decision, because blurring it is both dangerous and a form of greenwash. On the design side, the leverage is broad and real. You decide the reuse-first strategy; you decide the disassembly logic and the connection language; you decide the material palette and its recoverability; you decide to commission a passport and what it should capture; you decide how adaptable and long-lived the plan is. These are yours, and no one else in the chain can make them for you. Own them fully.

But a whole set of results are not yours, and pretending otherwise puts people at risk. Whether a salvaged steel beam or column can safely carry load again is a binding engineering decision that needs testing and a qualified structural engineer - never a designer's assumption that 'it looks fine.' Whether reused materials are acceptable under the governing code is a matter for the National Building Code of India and local regulations and the relevant authority, not your preference. Warranties on recovered products, insurance and liability for reuse, and the contracts that govern reclaimed supply belong to manufacturers, insurers and legal professionals. Fire performance, acoustic separation and structural certification of anything reused all sit with the specialists who sign for them.

The skill is to hold both truths at once: to push hard and imaginatively on the design leverage that is genuinely yours, while routing every binding result to the person qualified to own it - early, and in writing, not as an afterthought. A good circular designer does not say 'we will reuse this beam'; they say 'we intend to reuse this beam, and we have engaged a structural engineer to assess whether that is safe and a route to get it approved.' That sentence is more circular, not less, because it is the version that actually gets built. Deferring the binding decision is not surrendering the ambition - it is the only way the ambition survives contact with reality. The designer's authority is over intent, coordination and honesty; the certification is someone else's, and saying so clearly is part of doing the job well.

Coordination

The designer as the circular conductor

Circularity is a whole-building, whole-team property, and no single specialist can deliver it alone - which puts the designer in a role few other trades can play: the coordinator who holds the circular intent across everyone. The structural engineer can advise whether a reused frame is safe, but will not, unbidden, propose reusing one. The quantity surveyor can price a reclaimed material, but will default to new unless asked. The contractor can deconstruct rather than demolish, but only if the drawings and programme allow it. The client can fund a material passport, but only if someone explains why it is worth funding. Each of these is a piece; the designer is usually the only person positioned to assemble them into a coherent circular strategy and keep it alive as the project changes.

That coordination is concrete work, not a posture. It means writing circular intent into the brief so it survives value engineering. It means engaging the structural engineer early about reuse, not at the eleventh hour when it is too late to design around their answer. It means asking the QS to price the circular option honestly, including the avoided costs of new material and disposal, so the business case is fair. It means specifying deconstruction in the demolition scope of the existing building, and requiring the contractor to sort and salvage rather than crush. It means briefing whoever will hold the material passport - increasingly a job for BIM-linked data - on what to capture and how.

Without this coordinating hand, circular ambitions leak away at every handover: the reuse idea dies because the engineer was consulted too late, the reclaimed material is dropped because the QS priced only the premium and not the saving, the salvageable steel is crushed because no one told the demolition crew. The designer's coordinating role is to close those leaks - to be the person who keeps asking, at every stage and of every consultant, 'what happened to the circular intent we agreed?' It is unglamorous, it is mostly meetings and mark-ups, and it is where a great deal of real circularity is either delivered or quietly lost. The building remembers who kept asking.

You are the conductor: engineer, QS, contractor, client each hold a piece. Only you hold the whole circular intent. Keep asking what happened to it.

The honest voice

Being the honest voice against greenwash

The last part of the designer's circular role is the hardest and the most important: to be the honest voice in a field awash with greenwash. Because 'circular' and 'sustainable' sell, there is enormous pressure - from clients, marketers, product reps and sometimes one's own desire to feel good - to overstate. A building gets called circular because it has some recycled content; a product gets specified because its brochure says 'circular economy' in green letters; a project gets a sustainability award for a gesture while the fundamentals stay linear. The designer, who understands the difference between reuse and recycling and downcycling, is often the only person in the room who can tell the real thing from the performance - and therefore the only person who can refuse the performance.

That refusal takes practical forms. It means not calling a building circular when it is linear with a green tint. It means challenging a 'circular' product claim by asking the unglamorous questions - can it actually be recovered and reused, or only downcycled once? Is there a real route to take it back, or just a logo? It means resisting the temptation to headline a small recycled-content figure while the building is still designed to be smashed. It means telling a client the honest thing - that real circularity is hard, partial today, and raises reuse-safety, code and cost questions that must be worked through - rather than the flattering thing.

This honesty is not pessimism; it is the precondition for genuine progress. Greenwash is corrosive precisely because it lets everyone feel the problem is solved while nothing changes, and it discredits the real work when it is exposed. A designer who insists on the honest account - who says what is genuinely circular, what is aspiration, and what is just marketing - protects both the client and the credibility of circular design itself. The decision to reuse an existing structure or building, the disassembly logic of the frame and envelope, the material palette's recoverability, the plan's adaptability, and whether a material passport exists at all - these are architectural decisions no one else will make for you, and they are decided at concept, not in the tender. Own them, and coordinate the team around them: engage the structural engineer early on reuse, brief the QS to price the circular option fairly, specify deconstruction for what you take down. For the interior designerCircular fit-out, reuse, and low-churn, recoverable interiors

Your leverage is concentrated exactly where waste is worst - the fast-churning fit-out. Interiors are stripped and landfilled every few years, so your specification choices decide an enormous, repeating waste stream: reuse existing fit-out and furniture first, specify demountable partitions and loose-lay finishes over bonded ones, choose furniture and fittings that can be recovered and re-used, and design against needless strip-out. You are also the honest voice closest to the client's aesthetic wishes, which is where much interiors greenwash lives - refuse the 'sustainable' finish that is really a bonded composite headed for the bin. Coordinate any structural, fire, acoustic or warranty matter with the relevant specialists, and treat recoverability as a specification criterion sitting beside look and cost, not behind them.

Understanding where a designer's leverage actually sits is one of the most useful things you can carry into practice. Misconception check

Circularity is mostly out of the designer's hands - it depends on recyclers, demolition contractors, manufacturers taking products back, and government policy. As a designer you can specify a few greener products, but the real levers belong to other people further down the chain.

This gets the timeline backwards, and it is a comfortable way to avoid responsibility. By the time a building reaches a recycler or demolition contractor, the decisive choices are already fixed - and they were fixed by the designer, years earlier, when they were cheapest to make. Whether a building is reused or demolished, whether its structure is bolted or cast into an un-separable monolith, whether its materials are recoverable or bonded, and whether anyone ever wrote down what it is made of - all of these are drawing-board decisions that no downstream actor can reverse. A demolition contractor can only salvage what the designer allowed to be salvageable; a recycler can only process what the designer failed to make reusable; a take-back scheme only works for products the designer chose. The designer holds the largest circular levers of anyone in the chain, and holds them earliest. What genuinely does belong to others is the binding technical layer - certifying that a reused beam is safe, approving reused materials under the code, warranties and liability - and that must be deferred to engineers, the codes and specialists. But the strategy, the coordination and the honesty are the designer's, and treating them as someone else's job is how most circular ambition quietly dies.
