Eye level to read, overhead to see — and non-glare always

The hardware system is where a sign meets the wall. A sign is placed at eye level to be read and overhead to be seen at distance, sized for its viewing distance, and its shape carries meaning. Its material and finish suit the place and must be non-glare, because a glossy sign washes out under light; and it is illuminated — or made digital — only where it earns it. And accessible signage — tactile, Braille, high contrast, non-glare, a findable height — is required, not optional.

Shape, mounting & size

Eye-level wall signs are for reading close; overhead signs for seeing far; projecting signs for corridors; freestanding monoliths as landmarks — and size follows the viewing distance. ‘Put a sign wherever there’s space’ is a myth. And a sign’s shape carries connotations.[1, 2]

Read close, seen far

Where and how a sign is MOUNTED follows how it is read. EYE-LEVEL wall signs are for reading up close — room names, identification, tactile signs. OVERHEAD / suspended signs are for being seen across a space and over crowds — directional signs in concourses. PROJECTING (flag) signs are read moving along a corridor; FREESTANDING monoliths act as landmarks. And SIZE follows the viewing distance (the letter-height rule). 'Put a sign wherever there's space' is a MYTH — placement and size are determined by how and from where it must be read.[1, 2]

Material, finish & lighting

The material, coating and finish suit the place and must be non-glare, or the sign washes out. Lighting is added only where it earns it, and a digital screen is for changing content — ‘a screen is a better sign’ and ‘brighter is better’ are myths.[1, 3]

Suited to the place

The MATERIAL (metal, acrylic, glass, timber), COATING and FINISH are chosen for the place: outdoor weathering, high-touch wear, ease of cleaning — and, crucially, a NON-GLARE finish, because a glossy or mirror surface under bright light reflects and disappears. LIGHTING is added only where it earns it: non-illuminated where ambient light suffices, front- or back-lit where a sign must stand out or the space is dark. 'Brighter and more illuminated is better' is a MYTH — a glaring, over-bright sign is a legibility fault, and light is TUNED to the setting.[1, 3]

Accessible signage

Accessible signage carries raised tactile characters and Braille, high tonal contrast, a non-glare finish and a consistent, findable mounting height beside the door — the same inclusive-design duty as the rest of the programme, made specific to the sign.[3]

Tactile, Braille, contrast, non-glare

Accessible signage is NOT optional. Key permanent-room signs carry RAISED TACTILE characters and BRAILLE so a blind person can read by touch; all signs need high tonal CONTRAST and a NON-GLARE finish for low-vision readers; and tactile signs are mounted at a consistent, findable HEIGHT beside the door (on the latch side) so they can be located. These rules (ADA in the US; India's Harmonised Guidelines) are the same inclusive-design duty as the rest of the programme, made specific to the sign.[3]

Does: Gives information about a place — opening hours, a directory, a map, an orientation panel — usually read while stationary.

Honestly · Read up close and at leisure, so it can carry more than a directional sign; but even here, hierarchy and editing matter. A directory nobody can find is useless, so place it where people pause.

Honestly · Some signs are the law, not a design choice: fire-exit and safety signs follow statutory codes (colour, symbol, placement). These are non-negotiable and lead the sign plan, like life safety leads the building.

Honestly · Powerful when done right, but a map is only useful if it is ORIENTED to the viewer (what is ahead is up) — a north-up map at a turn confuses more than it helps. Heads-up orientation is the rule.

Does: A sign mounted at eye level on a wall, beside a door or at a decision point, for reading at close range — room names, identification, information.

Honestly · Eye level (around 1.4-1.6 m to centre) is where reading signs belong, so people can approach and read them, and a blind reader can find tactile text. Too high and it becomes decoration.

Overhead / suspended sign

Does: A sign hung from the ceiling or mounted high, seen across a space and over crowds — directional signs in concourses, stations, malls.

Honestly · Height buys distance and clears the crowd, but it must be sized for that distance (bigger letters) and lit so it does not silhouette against a bright ceiling. Overhead is for seeing far, not reading close.

Does: A sign projecting at right angles from a wall, read by people moving ALONG a corridor or street rather than facing the wall.

Honestly · Solves the problem that a flat wall sign is invisible edge-on to someone walking past. Useful in corridors and streets; its size and projection must respect the circulation clearance.

Freestanding / monolith

A landmark object

Does: A self-supporting sign — a totem, monolith or pylon — standing in a space or landscape as a wayfinding landmark and identifier.

Honestly · Doubles as a landmark (the wayfinding lesson), announcing an entrance or anchoring a junction. Its form and material carry brand and meaning, so it is as much object design as graphic design.

Floor graphic / line

Follow the line

Mounting & placementNUANCED

Does: Wayfinding applied to the FLOOR — a coloured line or footprints to follow (famously in hospitals), or floor-mounted directories.

Honestly · Intuitive and it keeps eyes on the path, but a floor line is worn by traffic, hidden by crowds and a slip risk if the wrong finish, so it supports overhead and wall signs rather than replacing them.

Does: A sign that relies on the ambient light of the space, with high tonal contrast so it reads without its own light source.

Honestly · Often the honest default: if the space is well lit and the contrast is high, a sign needs no power. Reserve illumination for where ambient light fails or a sign must stand out — not by default.

Does: A sign lit from behind — a light box with translucent graphics, or halo-lit letters glowing against the wall — for strong presence at night.

Honestly · High impact and even, but a back-lit box can be TOO bright, glaring and flattening contrast; and letters lit only as a halo can be hard to read. Brightness is tuned to the setting, not maximised.

Honestly · 'A screen is a better sign' is a MYTH: digital suits CHANGING information but adds cost, power, failure points and glare, and a dead or dazzling screen is worse than a printed sign. Use it for what actually changes, not for everything.

Honestly · Colour alone is not contrast: many people cannot tell certain colours apart, so rely on tonal (light vs dark) contrast. A tasteful tone-on-tone sign can be invisible to a low-vision reader.

Non-glare finish

Does: A matt, non-reflective finish so the sign is not washed out by reflected light or a mirror image of the room.

Honestly · One of the most overlooked legibility rules: a glossy or glass sign under bright light reflects and disappears. Accessibility standards require non-glare finishes on signs for exactly this reason.

Specify the hardware for three signs in a building: a room-identification sign, a corridor directional sign and an overhead concourse sign. For each, choose the mounting (eye level, projecting or overhead) and justify it by how the sign is read; set the size from its viewing distance; and pick a material and finish suited to the place, confirming it is non-glare. Decide whether each needs illumination or should be digital — and defend not adding light or a screen where it isn’t earned. Finally, make the room sign fully accessible: raised tactile characters and Braille, high contrast, non-glare, mounted at a findable height on the latch side.
