The Graphic System: Type, Symbols & Colour

Legibility isn't readability — and contrast is tonal, not colour

The graphic system makes a sign readable. Legibility (making out the letters) and readability (understanding the message) are different, and both are needed. Signage wants a clear, open typeface — a sans-serif reads better at distance than a decorative one — and letters sized for the viewing distance. Above all it needs high tonal contrast, because colour alone fails a colour-blind or low-vision reader. And pictograms must be standard, arrows unambiguous.

Legibility vs readability

Legibility is making out the letters (typeface, size, contrast); readability is comprehending the message (wording, layout, hierarchy) — a sign needs both. And ‘any nice font works’ is a myth: signage wants a clear, open sans-serif.[1, 2]

Two different things

Two words that are not the same. LEGIBILITY is whether you can make out the individual letters and symbols — a matter of typeface, size, weight, spacing and contrast. READABILITY is whether you can comprehend the whole message — a matter of wording, layout and hierarchy. A sign can be legible but unreadable (clear letters, muddled message) or readable in principle but illegible (good wording, too small to see). Signage must achieve BOTH, and they are designed by different means.[1]

Letters are sized for the viewing distance — about 25 mm of cap height per 3 m. And pictograms must be standard (AIGA/DOT, ISO 7001), arrows unambiguous and consistent. Try the calculator to feel how size scales with distance.[2, 3]

For a wall directional sign in a corridor or lobby, letters want about 85 mm of capital height. Too small for the distance and the sign is invisible; needlessly huge is clumsy and costly.

The letter-height rule

Letters must be SIZED for the VIEWING DISTANCE. The rule of thumb: about one INCH (25 mm) of capital-letter height for every 3 METRES (10 feet) of viewing distance for confident reading — so a sign read across a 10 m hall wants roughly 80 mm caps, while a room sign read at a metre or two needs far less. A sign too small for its distance is invisible; one needlessly huge is clumsy and expensive. The calculator lets you feel how size scales with distance.[2]

Colour alone fails

Contrast is tonal

The single biggest factor in legibility is tonal contrast (light versus dark), not colour: many people can’t distinguish certain colours, and in poor light similar tones blur into one. Colour still helps — for coding and brand — but as a support, never the sole cue.[1]

Colour alone fails

The single biggest factor in whether a sign can be read is CONTRAST — and it must be TONAL (light versus dark / luminance), not merely colour. 'As long as the colours look nice' is a MYTH: many people cannot distinguish certain colours (colour-blindness), and in poor light colour differences vanish, so two colours of similar tone read as one blur. High tonal contrast — dark text on a light ground by day, light on dark for illuminated signs at night — is what makes a sign legible to everyone, including low-vision readers.[1, 2]

Signage typeface

A clear, open typeface — usually a sans-serif with generous spacing and open counters — that stays legible at distance and low light; decorative or condensed fonts fail.

Standard pictograms

Apply it

Study task

Design one directional sign’s graphic system. Choose a clear, open sans-serif and justify it for legibility at distance. Decide the sign’s viewing distance and use the calculator to set the cap height. Pick a text-and-background pairing with high tonal contrast — then test it by converting to greyscale in your mind (or on screen): if the text still stands out in grey, the contrast is tonal, not just colourful. Add a standard pictogram and an unambiguous arrow. Finally, note where you use colour only as a support (a zone code) backed by text. The test is a sign a low-vision reader, and a reader at the far end of the space, can both read.
